|
Russell van Hooff 16th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMBilly Cotton - Roll Along Covered Wagon / Somewhere In The Blue Ridge Mountains (1935) | Better label image for side A would be welcomed.
|
Russell van Hooff 15th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMCavan O'Connor - Dear Heart Of Mine / In Your Arms Tonight (1935) | Some slightly less crusty images would be welcomed.

Russell van Hooff 12th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMRex Shaw's 2UE Old-Time Dance Band - Sue, Sue, Sue (1934) | in chronological order by record number, this is the first Regal Zonophone 78 in my collection of this red and green design. I wonder if it were introduced at number 22000 .... ?

Russell van Hooff 11th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMThe London Novelty Orchestra - The Boston Two-Step / La Maxixe (Mattchiche) (1932) | This appears to be a re-release of a 1931 Regal original recording.
|
Russell van Hooff 11th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMThe London Novelty Orchestra - The Boston Two-Step / La Maxixe (Mattchiche) (1931) | Wikipedia says "Regal Zonophone Records was a British record label formed in 1932, through a merger of the Regal and Zonophone labels. "
How then can this be 1931, and why is Regal Zonophone listed here as beginning in 1914 ?
Can someone please enlighten me.

Russell van Hooff 6th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMAnne Shelton - Lay Down Your Arms / Daydreams (1956) | **Camshaft**
Re: enlarged hole
It was common for the centre hole to be fractionally too small. This usually resulted in the user forcing the 78 onto the centre spindle, either breaking out the centre hole, or weakening it so it crumbled out over time.
Shellac 78s are fairly weighty, and usually stay put once you centre them (if using a modern record player or changer - on a gramophone tracking at 200 grams you're outta luck :-)

Russell van Hooff 6th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMWinifred Atwell - Let's Have A Party / Let's Have A Party (1954) | Nobody really knows who actually wrote Knees Up Mother Brown.
It was sung during the Armistice of the first world war, dating it to 1918 or beyond.
It was claimed in '38 by Lee, Weston & Taylor, but its origins are much older.
|
Russell van Hooff 6th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMDoris Day - The Black Hills Of Dakota / 'Tis Harry I'm Plannin' To Marry (1954) | 'Tis Harry' was not sung in the movie by Doris Day.
It was a number by Gale Robbins, in the part of Adelaid Adams.
|
Russell van Hooff 6th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMGuy Mitchell - (Otto Drives Me Crazy) Otto's Gotta Go / Too Late (1954) | A great record for fans of Crazy Otto (Fritz Schulz-Reichel)
A parody of Crazy Otto and his piano driving everyone mad ♥♫
|
Russell van Hooff 4th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMDoris Day - Two Hearts, Two Kisses (Make One Love) / Foolishly Yours (1955) | One of those records that Mitch Miller foisted on everyone, and made them sing it.
Even Sinatra had to sing this one. Closest he ever got to rock'n'roll.
Even stranger, since Mitch Miller was known for his hatred of rock'n'roll.
|
Russell van Hooff 4th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMSammy Kaye - In The Mission Of Saint Augustine / No Stone Unturned (1953) | My apologies for the hideously out-of-focus images
As soon as i find the record amongst the thousands here, i will provide better ones.
|
Russell van Hooff 4th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMEamonn Andrews - The Shifting Whispering Sands (1955) | i didn't realise he 'sang' anything else .... it's kinda like looking for records of Rex Harrison :-)
|
Russell van Hooff 3rd Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMFrank Rayston - Lambeth Walk (After Chopin And Liszt) / Lambeth Walk (After Verdi, Beethoven And Mozart) (1939) | Yes, this is a composite label .... its all i have, until i find the record amongst the thousands here, then i can provide images of two sides. This one will suffice for now ♥♫

Russell van Hooff 3rd Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMIvor Moreton And Dave Kaye - Kitten On The Keys / Nola (1934) | Contrary to this record label, Zez Confrey wrote it. See sheet music cover.
|
Russell van Hooff 3rd Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMRay Dickson - The Rock And Roll Waltz / The Shifting, Whispering Sands (1956) | sensational pics of a very difficult label to illustrate.
I wish half my 78 labels were this good.
|
Russell van Hooff 3rd Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMLes Welch - (If I Knew You Were Comin') I'd've Baked A Cake / Rag Mop (1950) | Interesting spelling of 'Ragg Mopp' on this label
|
Russell van Hooff 2nd Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMJane Powell - Too Late Now / How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Loved You, When You Know I've Been A Liar All My Life (1951) | This once held the record for the longest song title.
It was eclipsed by the Stars On 45 Beatles Medley, officially.
In my opinion (but obviously not the officials) the 'Stars' single was a list of Beatles songs, not a real song title.

Russell van Hooff 1st Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMAnnikki Tähti - Itke Sydämeni (Cry My Heart) / Vanha Riimu (There's A Bridle Hangin' On The Wall) (1954) | GRRR one of my pet hates is when radio announcers call this man 'Robinson' !!!
It is no help at all when the record label mis-spells it as well.
'There's A Bridle' was written by Carson R O B I S O N.

Russell van Hooff 1st Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMJohnny Henderson And The Hired-Hands - I Love You So Much It Hurts / Life Get's Tee-Jus (1949) | GRRR one of my pet hates is when radio announcers call this man 'Robinson' !!!
Its even worse when the record label has his name misprinted as well.
Life Gits Tee-Jus was written by Carson R O B I S O N

Russell van Hooff 1st Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMLena Horne - Sometimes I'm Happy / Something To Live For (1948) | I hate it when information becomes blurred.
This track is arguably long before 1955, probably around 1949.
The simple matter is, the label clearly mentions 'Hit The Deck', which is a 1955 MGM film.
If this were a 1949 record, they couldn't possibly mention a film that hadn't been made yet.
|
Russell van Hooff 1st Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMShirley Abicair - I'd Love To Fall Asleep (And Wake Up In Your Arms) / Your Mother And Mine (1953) | I have a UK London juke-box pressing of this record, with exact same matrix numbers.
|
Russell van Hooff 31st Mar 2019 | | 78 RPMJoan Clarke - Holdin' You In My Holden / Holdin' You In My Holden (1956) | This is possibly the only record ever released by Holden ?
|
Russell van Hooff 31st Mar 2019 | | 78 RPMJohn Charles Thomas - Bluebird Of Happiness / The Last Time I Saw Paris (1941) | To the best of my knowledge, this is a post-1946 release of 'Paris', to coincide with the film 'Till The Clouds Roll By', but the original recordings were in the early war years, hot on the tail of the occupation of France by the Nazis.
|
Russell van Hooff 31st Mar 2019 | | 78 RPMAl Goodman - The Girl That I Marry / Who Do You Love I Hope (1947) | This is contemporary with the original Broadway show.
MGM deleted 'Moonshine Lullaby' from the 1950 film.
