Scratchy45 29th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMJohnny Dee - Sittin' In The Balcony / A-Plus Love (1957) | With a mod to freakbeatjames, new scans added from a copy actually in hand - mods please reprioritise.
|
Scratchy45 29th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMPattman - Liebestraum, Part 1 / Liebestraum, Part 2 (1928) | Scans added. I have to admit I can't see the artist's name without mentally hearing the one-word chorus of Neal Hefti's 1960s superhero theme, suitably amended ....

Scratchy45 24th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMReser's Dance Orchestra - Yes, Sir! That's My Baby / Pango Pango Maid (1925) | This week I failed to win a very elegant little portable gramophone in an auction. However, in the box of immaculately kept discs that accompanied it, nearly all with variations on the same shop sleeve, I spied and photographed this disc on the UK Actuelle label - a rather striking label I've never seen before.
|
Scratchy45 31st Aug 2024 | | 78 RPMFrank Coombs - Silver Threads Among The Gold / Nelly Was A Lady (1914) | A later issue credits side 2 to Irving Gillette (pseudonym of Henry Burr). On this issue the Regal label lettering for this is spread horizontally across top third of label, under "Made In England" and resale price maintenance wording. Scans to follow.
|
Scratchy45 7th Aug 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Galloway-Ruault Old-Time Dance Orchestra - The Veleta / The Moonlight Saunter (Moonlight On The Nile) (1948) | Scans uploaded - first for a while but more to follow as found a charity shop stash the other day at a reasonable unit price.
|
Scratchy45 15th Feb 2024 | | 78 RPMThe German Opera Orchestra - Serenade For String Orchestra Op. 48 (1932) | FIrst disc of a daftly-sequenced 3 disc set continued on PO 5097/8. Why so? The discs are presented in anything but playing order. 5096 has movement 1 on 2 parts. 1st side of 5097 is movement 2 . So far so good. Then 2nd side of 5097 is Movement 4 conclusion. 1st and 2nd sides of 5098 are Movement 3 parts1 and 2.

Scratchy45 12th Jan 2024 | | 78 RPMJohn Kirby - Move Over / Slowly (1946) | Thank you fixbutte and KeithS :-) It's a very distinctive style.
|
Scratchy45 11th Jan 2024 | | 78 RPMJohn Kirby - Move Over / Slowly (1946) | Idle curiosity - might anyone know who the sleeve artist was? I can see what seems like a signature at the bottom, but can't make it out even with some digital jiggery-pokery. Is it David Stone Martin?
|
Scratchy45 5th Jan 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Johnny Meyer Quintet - Blue Skies / Re-Bop Continental (1948) | Can't confirm what's correct but there's a Philips issue PH 5003 with "Re-Bob" too on Discogs. Hans Vlig Van Der Sys appears to be the birth name of the composer - the "Vlig" seems to have been have been dropped for some uses, used for others.

Scratchy45 1st Jan 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Johnny Meyer Quintet - Blue Skies / Re-Bop Continental (1948) | Complete side B label scan uploaded. Thanks to MrPasta for reminding me that I own this.

Looks to be one of this set of four https://www.tuckdbpostcards.org/items/126069-series-p-nursery-rhymes-no-63-sing-a-song-of-sixpence/picture/1

Scratchy45 11th Dec 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Budapest String Quartet (Roismann Quartet) And Benny Goodman - Quartet In A Major (A Dur), K.581 (1938) | Not terribly visible on these scans but clearer on the other two discs are credits for the Roismann quartet - (Reisemann, Schneider, Kroyt, Schneider) & Benny Goodman on Clarinet making it up to a quintet.

Scratchy45 14th Nov 2023 | | 78 RPMAlfred Read - Outward Bound | Thanks for the image MrPasta - I think JLC135 is right to focus more on the labels, though. Fairly randomly I came across a picture of multiples of the yellow "private recording" label stock which were used to label some dubbing from wax cylinders of older field recordings made in Vanuatu. It is suggested that this occurred in 1936 - see this True Echoeswebsite for the pic (towards the bottom of the page).
Use of CTPX code described as being from 1932-on here

Scratchy45 14th Nov 2023 | | 78 RPMAlfred Read - Outward Bound | The song is one of a 5-song cycle composed by Charles Villiers Stanford early in the 20th Century.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_of_the_Sea_(Stanford)
Another recording is by Peter Dawson on His Master's Voice cat# B.4482 from 1933.
|
Scratchy45 14th Nov 2023 | | 78 RPMAlfred Read - Outward Bound | I don't know if it will be significant, but what does the "blank" side look like - does it bear any markings, either large or small?
|
Scratchy45 28th Oct 2023 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Given To Fred Carter From Georgie Where Ever He Is | The address still seems to be set for a bit of HMV hokey-cokey in the latest retail incarnation of the brand. https://londonist.com/london/music/hmv-oxford-street-comeback
|
Scratchy45 28th Oct 2023 | | 78 RPMUncle John - Old King Cole / Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary | Added with alphabetic cat# after a bit of head scratching and reference to www.mgthomas.co.uk
|
Scratchy45 23rd Oct 2023 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Given To Fred Carter From Georgie Where Ever He Is | Bottom of label given the address of the HMV store in Oxford street, so presumably recorded in the public recording booth there for whatever fee was current at time of recording.

Scratchy45 14th Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMPaul Rich - Smoke Gets In Your Eyes / Problems (1959) | jimmysavile53 - Might I suggest it would be worthwhile doing some more research and logical thinking before posting another request like this here. Please consider where it might best be made on a case-by-case basis - if you do feel the request must be made.
There are 14 owners of this release on the 7" vinyl format on 45cat, as opposed to the 4 here who own 78s..
I've just checked another of your recent requests where the statistics point the same way, though I fully appreciate Embassy only started to issue on the 45rpm format in 1958.

Scratchy45 10th Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMMr. Charles Tree - A Fat Li'l Feller Wid His Mammy's Eyes (1913) | Unusual selection - or not? Looking at the artist's other recordings on Kelly brings up plenty of South-West English songs, some Irish, the odd Welsh and maybe even Scottish.
This song (lyrics by Frank Lebby Stanton. known for "Mighty Lak' a Rose" , music by Sheridan Gordon) appears to have been picked up for performance very soon after being published by Chappell, if this source is correctly quoting the date of first publication https://imslp.org/wiki/A_Fat_Li%27l_Feller_wid_his_Mammy%27s_Eyes_(Gordon,_Sheridan)
A cursory search for other recordings brings up one in 1926 by an Australian baritone before Paul Robeson's version in the 30s.

Scratchy45 9th Sep 2023 | | 78 RPMJay Whidden - I'm Crazy Over You / Casablanca (1929) | Very eccentric placement of matrix numbers on the label. One is a at 90 degrees to the other.
|
Scratchy45 30th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMAldershot County High School - Dido And Aeneas / Dido And Aeneas | I've come across small-company one-off recordings like this where the labelling is similarly haphazard - probably using whatever label stock came to hand on the day.
|
Scratchy45 11th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMSergei Rachmaninoff And The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra - Concerto No. 2, In C Minor, Op. 18 (Record No. 3/4) (1929) | Side/record 4 image finally uploaded - it only took 2 months to locate the disc again after some investigative unpacking post storage-reorganisation My 78s have to make the most of storage in a very cramped and elaborately-packed living space.

Scratchy45 8th Jul 2023 | | 78 RPMM. Gustave Bret - Fantaisie Et Fugue En Sol Mineur 1e Partie / Fantaisie Et Fugue En Sol Mineur 2e Partie (1932) | Date as suggested by recording date in May 1931 from this source could be 1931/2. Meant to enter 1931, instead put 1932 before stopping to consider fully. No mention in the Kelly database that I can find.
|
Scratchy45 4th Jul 2023 | | 78 RPMOjwang, Okelo And Party - Awinyo Tum Pameya / Paibworo | What's under the cat# on this and other Rafiki releases seen on the web seems to be the language of the release. Acholi language on wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acholi_dialect
Made in England on the label, label present on M G Thomas website http://www.mgthomas.co.uk/Records/labelindex-R.htm

Scratchy45 3rd Jul 2023 | | 78 RPMAmelita Galli-Curci - La Capinera (The Wren) / La Paloma (The Dove) (1929) | Scan added - my disc found lurking in a shop-bag-type sleeve.

Scratchy45 25th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMThe London Philharmonic Orchestra - Serenade In E Minor (E Moll) For Strings OP. 20 1st Movement Allegro Piacevole / Serenade In E Minor (E Moll) For Strings OP. 20 2nd Movement (Part 1) Larghetto (1934) | Part of a 2-record set with D.B.2133. Rather eccentrically, side 1 label is scarlet red while side 2 is cream (and thus much easier to scan clearly).
