Original Washboard Beaters - Yale Rhythm / Lazy Weather (1927)
This was submitted with an Apr 1951 release date, but was released in Nov 1927. Parlophone unfortunately duplicated some numbers in the R-3000 range. The key clue is the horn gramophone on the label!

Yes, JO series is 'Continental Export', so not intended for any particular country. See Mike Thomas' Website for listing and this catalogue for some export series prefixes.

Alexander Prince - Estudiantina Waltz / The Blue Bells Of Scotland (1912)
Moved earlier multicoloured labels to the top. The monochrome labels were introduced circa late 1917, and the gold on claret labels circa mid 1922.

The Very Rev. H. R. L. Sheppard - Let Me Enjoy This 'Ere War In Peace / The Relevance Of Christianity (1930)
Quote: "Interestingly, these notes (may) seem to date the record release as the 31st March 1930. If so, then this contradicts the dating software, which states release during April 1930."
Software dates from Frank Andrews "HMV B Series". But 31st of March is almost April, and we don't know when they were delivered to the retailers. Perhaps slightly in advance of the monthly supplement date?

George Formby [Senior] - Plink Plonk (The Skin Of A Spanish Onion) (1909)
Released May 1909 in the UK. Perhaps "The Edison Phonograph Monthly" consulted is a USA publication? UK and USA release dates are different and as this is a British (12xxx series) amberol it would have been UK released before USA.

@Whyperion - all amberols (wax and blue) are 4 minute cylinders.

Mr. Will Thompson - Long, Long Way To Tipperary / I'm Lonesome (1913)
I've changed the date on this for reasons too complicated to explain in a simple comment, so I've written a new label biography to explain this discographer's nightmare label.

Mr. Len Ward - Fairyland / Skaters Waltz
Both sides of this record suggest it was pressed by Edison-Bell, when compared with the A side of Bell Disc 131. Both have a 2335 face number/matrix marking on the label. The B side (also with a 2186 marking) was released on Bell Disc 57. The artist is Billy Whitlock.

Mr. Jack Charman - Fall In And Follow Me / Come Over The Garden Wall (1910)

Monsieur Bravo - Derrière La Musique Militaire (Behind The Band) (1899)
I added the missing final '3' to the catalogue number. The matrix number (3186) to the right of the centre hole shows this to be part of Fred Gaisberg's unlettered matrix series recorded between 14 July and 6 Aug. 1899 (approx 3132-3453) in Paris. This is probably why 'London' appears above the centre hole. See the second item in this Kelly Database search and also Brian Rust's article on Gaisberg's 7 inch matrixes in Talking Machine Review No 63-64 for Autumn 1981.

La Garde Republicaine - Schottisch Des Pierrots (1904)
The Kelly Online Database says that the X suffix recording is from 1904. Use the basic search with Issue Number 30092. You can click on each entry for more details. This database is a great resource for early Berliner/Gramophone Co./G&T/HMV recordings. I've updated the notes.

Don Azpiazu And His Havana Casino Orchestra - The Peanut Vendor / True And Sincere Love (1930)
We can't think of this series as exclusively destined for Africa. By 1951 the GV series was an 'International' series (see the 1951-2 UK Trade Catalogue image here). GV1 was still in the catalogue at this date. However the earliest release date given in the listing is GV 152 for Sept 1948, which is marked for deletion on 31 Jan 1952.

Various Artists - Black And White Rhythm Style Series No.1 & 2 (1936)
CE7691-1 was recorded 18 June 1936 and CE7694-1 on 23 June which suggests a slightly earlier recording date than suggested in the notes. The cat number also suggests a late 1936 release (approx R2140 to R2284 in 1936). A review of this record appeared in the September 1936 edition of The Gramophone magazine. No other releases in this series are known.

Michael Casey - Casey At The Dentist's / Casey Taking The Census (1915)
To put this in the correct context, many records remained in the Regal (and other labels) catalogue for a very long time, so calling it a 're-issue' isn't correct. This version (mx:29900/29824) was finally deleted from the catalogue in September 1927, when it was replaced by an electrical re-recording (cat no. 7115R, mx: A5948/A5947) made on 9 August 1927. This re-recording remained in the catalogue until February 1942.

However many Regal recordings were acoustically re-recorded around 1923/4 and they can only be determined from the matrix number, not the label design.

Enrico Caruso - The Lost Chord (1912)
The zero before any main number in HMV single sided discs (eg 0xxxx, 1-0xxxx, 2-0xxxx, 3-0xxxx where xxxx is 1 to 5 digits) indicates a 12 inch record. But its very easy to forget to change the size from the default 10 inch when entering a new record.

Regimental Band Of H.M. Grenadier Guards - The Parade Of The Tin Soldiers / The Burial Of Cock Robin (1915)
Discographers use the 'W' convention to indicate a disk recorded using the Western Electric process. You'll find it in the runout as a W in a circle. Columbia later moved to its own electric recording system and those matrices are usually given as CAX... as the symbol in the runout changes to C in a circle. Most Columbia electrical re-recordings have an R suffix on the catalogue number, so we list them separately.

Regimental Band Of H.M. Grenadier Guards - The Parade Of The Tin Soldiers / The Burial Of Cock Robin (1915)
The side variations were recorded 26 Feb 1926, matrices WAX1323-2/WAX1324. Ronald Taylor's discography has these releases with a catalogue number with an R suffix, but in this case obviously not!
