Whyperion SUBS 23rd Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMMembers Of "La Musique Intime" - Was Qualet (What Ails Thee) / Trocknet Euch (Dry Your Tears) | I had a number of paper sleeves for I think EMG , they were mainly blank green with a rubber stamp inked gramophone logo matching the one on the label here. I think I passed them to Juke Jules if not they ended up in a shop in Wath On Dearne Market

Whyperion SUBS 21st Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMDel Shannon - Hats Off To Larry / Don't Gild The Lily, Lily (1961) | Am I comparing the audio off these discs unfairly. I really should overhaul dad's mono valve amp and find a suitable 1960s Garrard Deck to play through it. ( must remember to check the Impedence of the speaker I use in the amp is the correct for what the output transformer was built for ).

Whyperion SUBS 21st Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMFoster Richardson - Song Of The Bow / Devonshire Cream And Cider (1922) | Indeed so, (and I had forgotten the supplements (bi) monthly). However come the 1930s as radio (and talking pictures) had started to come in there would have been cross opportunities in the fan following of the orchestras. Pre say 1931 would the artists when visiting the local Hippodrome (or whatever) ensure a quantity of discs would be avalible to purchase by their fans - or would it be a link up to the (often in the 1920s the Piano/Bicycle shop that always seemed to sell records as well !) I suppose there would be column inches in local newspapers too as well as selected nationals.
In the same way as come the 1940s recycle shellac campaign there was the waste paper drive and I imagine a lot of the catalogues were lost, along with those as dealers closed as they got old and expired. I have said before how much mum lost in WW2 and I am surprised her auntie had so much pre WW2 items given she moved at least three times (for a grand distance each time of 400 metres but she did tend to chuck the furniture when she moved ).

Whyperion SUBS 21st Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMFoster Richardson - Song Of The Bow / Devonshire Cream And Cider (1922) | How did these records get sold (as in marketing and recommendation ?) was it from local newspapers, retailer suggestions/ window displays or did everyone read The Gramophone ?
I suppose the likes of Foster Richardson were already stars of the stage and touring reviews and light music concerts.
Whyperion SUBS 21st Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMHastings Municipal Orchestra - Slavonic Rhapsody – Op. 114 / Slavonic Rhapsody – Op. 114 (1931) | unfortunately we go with what is on the label (did Decca correct on a later pressing issue ?)
Worth noting conducted by Basil Cameron
Do we not have Arranger as another field in 78 etc world ?
Whyperion SUBS 20th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMFoster Richardson - Song Of The Bow / Devonshire Cream And Cider (1922) | Oblique Images of one of the pressings added (my copy has light green labels)

Whyperion SUBS 17th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMBand Of H.M. Scots Guards - In A Monastery Garden / In A Persian Market (1924) | Question is where are Wilson, Keppel and Betty ?
Whyperion SUBS 17th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMMadame Clara Butt - Abide With Me (1915) | GS , thats interesting playing that vid as that C sounds flat to me. Given a lot of later double sided Columbia's were marked as 80rpm, would that be their earlier recordings , or an instruction to play at 80 to bring a pitch recorded at 78 up to the more modern (was the change 1930s for orchestras - 1950s for brass bands ?)
Actually the arrangement Clara sings I have not heard before (or is it the Alto part on its own from a harmony arrangement ?

Whyperion SUBS 14th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMCarroll Gibbons And The Savoy Hotel Orpheans - Turn On The Old Music Box / Little Wooden Head (1940) | [YouTube Video]
Whyperion SUBS 14th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMGolden Gate Quartet - Time's Winding Up / Anyhow (1946) | As indeed it seems to be
"date from Labelliste von 'Columbia (USA)'. (1945-1950). © 22.07.2017 by Henry König" which itself I presume is from either Columbia sales brochures or Columbia internal recording notes
Whyperion SUBS 11th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMFrank Luther - Will The Angels Play Their Harps For Me? (A Beggar's Lament) / An Old Man's Story (1928) | Frank Luther seems to have recorded Will The Angels Play Their Harps For Me as Bud Billings (on Zonophone in the UK and Jimmie Black on Okeh in the USA. Are these all the same recordings or different sessions done (matrix numbers dont seem to match)
Whyperion SUBS 10th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMJohnny Standley - It's In The Book (Part 1) / It's In The Book (Part 2) (1952) | so is the cat number

Whyperion SUBS 6th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMDon Wilson - Walt Disney's Little Hiawatha Part 1 / Walt Disney's Little Hiawatha Part 2 (1954) | Still worth noting that the EMI Press ones were not the first out, for those of us that forget. Any reason why Australia was still a year behind the US 1952 release? (does licensing with Disney take that long?)
Both sides of the disc fit into one side of 7in EP https://www.45cat.com/record/fap3183
Whyperion SUBS 5th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMRonnie Rhodes - Amy / Meet Me In My Dreams To-Night (1930) | I appear to have a different pressing with matrix numbers and made in england in different font and weight and a single outer inner pressing ring rather than the double here
Whyperion SUBS 5th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMFrank Luther And Carson Robison - His Old Cornet / Smoky Mountain Bill (1931) | Also on USA Champion – 15964, but pairing from a different (1930 ?) recording session

Whyperion SUBS 5th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMTiny Grimes And His Rocking Highlanders, Screaming Jay Hawkins - Why Did You Waste My Time? / Coronation Jump (1953) | Presumably there should be a 45 issue of this ?
Whyperion SUBS 5th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMJoe Loss - Hey ! Little Hen / I'll Think Of You (1941) | [YouTube Video]

Whyperion SUBS 5th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMHarry Mortimer - Alpine Echoes (1935) | The TT Tax Stamp indicates this was still selling into WW2 despite 3 times purchase tax .

Whyperion SUBS 4th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMJack Mackintosh With Harton Colliery Band - Alpine Echoes / Right Away (1929) | Date needed , prob 1928, track titles and artists might need changes when scans can be added just to better reflect what is on the label (eg move Cornet Solo and March to the notes next to the matrix numbers)
Whyperion SUBS 4th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMPhyllis Robins - It's A Hap-Hap-Happy Day / Goodnight Children Everywhere (1940) | Best Image is the catalogue sheet from Feb 1940, until something better comes along.
One (Or Both?) Of The Track Titles is from film "Gulliver's Travels"
Whyperion SUBS 4th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMNat Gonella And His New Georgians - Down In Mexico / Beat Me Daddy Eight To The Bar (1941) | Down In Mexico appears on CD "VARIOUS ARTISTS - THEY PLAYED GREENS PLAYHOUSE GLASGOW... PLUS OTHER BALLROOMS , Dance Bands of the 1940s") - so that CD doesnt have the 1973 Led Zeppelin performance at Green's Playhouse.
Whyperion SUBS 4th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMNat Gonella And His New Georgians - Down In Mexico / Beat Me Daddy Eight To The Bar (1941) | Can anyone add Date for this and flip side better details also improve label image with better editing
Whyperion SUBS 4th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMAlma Gluck - Musetta Waltz (1916) | Internet Archive
Internet Archive image is probably a Victor labelled pressing, supposedly dating from 1916 but I suspect that information relates to the recording date and not the pressing date , interestingly it has a Illinois State Library sticker on it
