Well, fixbutte, I am looking directly at my 78 of this record. The stamped matrix numbers in the dead wax are in fact, S T 1 and S T 2. Yes, certainly that more likely "ought to" point the interested discographer to Sonny Terry. But the fact is, the Capris first record used ST1 and ST2 and that's the truth, Ruth. Why? Someone ought to troll Irvin Ballen in the afterlife to find out his intentions.

Oh, and the record most definitely plays the two Capris tunes...

Gotham used abbreviations of the artist's band or group's name - some other labels like Aristocrat tried a separate number series for each artist. They always ended up hopelessly complicated.
This is a later issue than the Terry and was an unintended duplication. Could have stood for lead singer or manager. They always used 2 or 3 letters, never just one.

Added: The very early ones [mid-20s] used an Si-100 series not dedicated to specific artists.

I suggest that ST1 and ST2 are not the actual matrix numbers of this record, that means the label inscriptions are wrong.

I have tumbled on my own on the idea that they are using artist initials à la Atlas records. But whose initials are generating the ST mx for The Capris?

Can anybody explain Gotham's mx numbers to me. The mx numbers on this disc ST1 and ST2 were also used on the Sonny Terry disc G-517, which is also in the database. Perhps these are not matrix numbers at all? Or maybe Gotham was run by trolls and they can't count any higher than 3 or 4?
