I was given a box type wind-up around 1968 and it came with two 78s: Johnny Ray's 'Yes Tonight Josephine' and Lonnie's 'Cumberland Gap' on shellac, so I assume the punter had a choice between shellac and vinyl. My mother had the vinyl copy.

Using a steel single use needle would destroy the record in short order only a light weight arm with a flip over type stylus or specialist cartridge should be used.

This is the first 78 I have come across made from vinyl as opposed to shellac. I wonder what damage would have been done to them with steel single use needles.

Although vinyl, they are nonetheless not microgroove and should be played with the regular 78 stylus -- 'green' :-)

 What should I play a vinyl 78 with, a Sapphire Stylus ?

These vinyl 78s (Pye/ Mercury/ Top Rank) are truly wonderful sounding and show in every way why 78s are superior in sound to 45s and LPs.

Early Top Ranks were also on vinyl but I assume because they used the Pye pressing plant.

Pye seem to have been the first, certainly of the big labels, to switch to vinyl. I don't think the other 'majors' followed suit.

Came across one of these amongst some 10" LP's in the local Sue Ryder shop yesterday, don't usually stray outside of my 45rpm comfort zone but just found the idea of a flexible (vinyl I assume) 78 interesting, were these just a PYE thing or did other labels do them too?

The sound on "Faithful" is awful, but I couldn'r resist you the grammo.

"Little Darlin'" reached Number 3 in the NME charts, 31 May 1957. It was also awarded a Gold Disc.

Heard on jukeboxes all over the world at the time, "Little Darlin'" was the top side.
