the 1952 (& other 1950s (?)) printing bears a monochrome d-j printed mainly in grey (titles in white, i.e. left unprinted), d-j art is a picture of an aircraft carrier in heavy seas;
uniform series design: series name, "the novels of", printed in black above author's name, then horizontal white line, then d-j art, then title. bound with endpapers between light blue cloth-covered boards.

the 1960 through 1968 (at least) heinemann printings bear a full colour d-j, art by w. francis phillipps - william francis phillipps, probably most often credited as w. f. phillipps.

the first edition h/cvr's publication date may've been preceded by the official distribution to air raid precautions officers to familiarise them with the possible and probable effects of major aerial bombing, including public health risks, such as subsequent explosions due to broken (town gas) gas mains and domestic pipes, &c., and to diseases resulting from contaminated water supplies.
