David Whiteley 30th Sep 2020 | | BookPhilip José Farmer - Dark Is The Sun (1981) | Since I made my comment regarding the ex library book I have spoken to an ex librarian who told me that he used to send a pile of books to be rebound and they would come back looking as good as new.
He also told me that, when removing the books from stock they would tear out the title page, as it was easier when deleating the books from their system to work from a small pile of single pages rather than a stack of books.

David Whiteley 29th Sep 2020 | | BookPhilip José Farmer - Down In The Black Gang (1971) | The title on the cover of the hardback is "Down In The Black Gang" and on the title page it adds "And Others A Story Collection" which is why the second part is listed as a subtitle.
Maybe the subtitle should be added to the paperback edition even though it only adds "And Other Stories".
The two farmer websites I have consulted both list the two editions as "Down In The Black Gang" only.

David Whiteley 25th Sep 2020 | | BookEgon Friedell - The Return Of The Time Machine (1972) | Added back cover which gives more information about this book.
Originally published in Germany as "Die Reise mit der Zeitmaschine" in 1946 - translated by Eddy C Bertin into English for this 1972 edition.
Cover painting and four illustrations by Karel Thole.

David Whiteley 22nd Sep 2020 | | BookTerry Southern - Candy (1970) | @ppint I think your second option "- or it could've been a strip-and-rebind job with decimal-only uk price" is the correct one as this book is smaller than other NEL books that I own. This would also explain the two SBN No.s. It must have been originally issued with 450004856 in April 1970 and then rebound with a new cover and No. 450011879 about 1973 which is about the time this No. would have been used.
No sign of a double card spine though.

David Whiteley 22nd Sep 2020 | | BookTerry Southern - Candy (1970) | I see the date April 1970 has been added. I left the publication date blank as April 1970 can't be correct as this was before UK decimalisation and books at that time had the price in both LSD and new pence. This one only states 40p.
Looking at entries for other NEL books I would guess it was published around 1973

David Whiteley 19th Aug 2020 | | BookW. A. Ballinger - The Exterminator | 23skidoo & ppint. I don't have any more Danger Man/Secret Agent books published by Zenith. The others are either Consul (UK) or MB (US). What I do have are some war books by William Howard Baker, two of them are Zenith's,The others are, one by Mayflower, one by another unknown publisher, Trojan Publications London. and one hardback published by Howard Baker Publishing Limited.Only the Mayflower and the hardback have a date of publication and catalogue No.
These were re-prints of Sexton Blake stories written by Baker in the late 1950's while he was editor of The Sexton Blake Library with Sexton Blake's name changed to Richard Quintain.
Zenith by the way was a main adversary of Sexton Blake.

David Whiteley 14th Aug 2020 | | BookPhilip José Farmer - Dark Is The Sun (1981) | Cover info scans added from two different UK hardback editions. The one without a price is from the cover shown here, the other is from an ex library copy.
The library copy has had it's boards and title page removed 10 mm chopped of the bottom of the book and cover then re-assembled using plain black boards (no aurthor or title). It seems to be a lot of work for a library to do.
