Magic Marmalade 15th May 2017 | | CD SingleRita Connolly - Amiens (1992) | On this particular release, I notice there is a printed (unprinted) blank area inside the cover for a stamp to be made: "Distributed by:" which could only be for promotion purposes.
I don't think a copy intended for sale would have that...
...but the barcode is a puzzler.
(Her other CD doesn't seem to have this though)

Magic Marmalade 2nd May 2017 | | CD SingleOasis - Go Let It Out (Demo) | Noel sings this here... not Liam.
(being a demo, I suppose that's a matter of course)
...thumping, driving, rough, yet full sounding version.
(better than the actual release I think!)

Magic Marmalade 20th Jan 2017 | | CD SingleMagnapop - Open The Door (1996) | A great bit of early nineties grunge punk.
...Like Hole, The Breeders, and could sit happily alongside Nirvana, or anything from around 1993-4....
... Unfortunately, this has a 1996 date on it, when Britpop happened. So I think it might be a case of having missed the bus.
Thumbs up here though!

Magic Marmalade 4th Jan 2017 | | CD SingleFun Lovin' Criminals - Korean Bodega (Clean Album Version) (1999) | Afraid I dropped a clanger with this entry....
... The way the tracks are presented on the card insert, it looks like there's 3 tracks:
Korean Bodega / Clean Album / Aero Mexicala,
...but in fact there's only 2 tracks, with "Korean Bodega" being the title of both, and then those being presented simply by their remix titles, without the title of the track they are a remix of.
So correction submission is on order.

Magic Marmalade 31st Dec 2016 | | CD SingleMerz - Many Weathers Apart | Submitted correction for format.
Concluded this to be an album sampler.
|
Magic Marmalade 30th Dec 2016 | | CD SingleMerz - Many Weathers Apart | I've got a few promo CDs now, and some, which are made up with covers as a "finshed" product (so to speak) ready to go to radio stations and the like, have a pretty standard silver underside/ playing surface, while a couple of the other CDrs, like my Wurzels CD single, has the characteristic blue underside.... but this is a much deeper blue colour.. very pronounced.
...Just retrieved it to look at the inner ring, to see what it says there, and all it has is:
"Recordable CD 74 Min SE12AP"
(Which I presume is a postcode)
|
Magic Marmalade 26th Dec 2016 | | CD SingleMerz - Many Weathers Apart | Well this kind of threw me to be honest... I'd heard of CD acetates, but never actually seen one myself, in the flesh...
... no barcode, co cat, and no: "Promo / demo - Not for sale" kind of text, so not intended either for sale or promotion in the usual sense.
I suppose they are for in house sampling use, in the same way that the old 45 demos were originally used. (Or are they a CD equivalent of a test pressing?)
If it is felt that promo would be more appropriate then I'd be more than happy for it to be changed - And if anyone knows what the deal is with these I'd like to know :)
|
Magic Marmalade 24th Dec 2016 | | CD SingleMerz - Many Weathers Apart | I went for "unreleased" for this, as although these tracks were eventually released as a single, this is copy is not for issue, and isn't a promo of any description.
The term that I have seen around the net that applies to these is "CD Acetate" (I've also seen a Suede one)... maybe an option to be added to the drop down box?
-But please change the CD type if you think it best, or if the actual release is ever added, maybe this should be moved to that entry... or this could be made to be the actual entry, with proper release details added along with scans - I'll be doing all my scans after crimbus -

Magic Marmalade 18th Oct 2016 | | CD SingleDrizabone - Real Love (Radio Version) (1995) | Have uploaded the scan of the inside cover which may be signed (?)
...anyone got any thoughts on it?
I did see something on the telly a few years back about celebs "numbering" their signatures, as some kind of authentication method, and this appears to have"32" under it... but dating it is a new one on me.
...And can't for the life of me figure out the name. looks like: F(S-?)u_ _ni (a) er
(?)
(If it's just a happy birthday gift inscription, then just delete the image)

Magic Marmalade 16th Oct 2016 | | CD SingleDrizabone - Real Love (Radio Version) (1995) | I can't think what it was that first attracted me to this CD single when I found it the other day....
... Actually, it was a combination of factors: It's a digipak (Why I first pick anything off the shelf to look at, as it could be an SACD, promo, a limited ed, or the like), seeing the label as Fourth and Broadway, which I know Tricky has been associated with, so maybe it's that kind of thing - worth a punt thinks I -
and also because there appears to be a dated signature on the inside front cover (someone has yet to demystify the whole signature thing for me) can't decode the name that's signed there either yet.
But having got it home and listened to it, I have to say it's not my thing at all really, sounding like the pretty standard dance music of the time.
But what has caused me to scratch my head is that apparently the original release of this from 1991 (?) is regarded as a classic among dancey types, and I've even seen more than a couple of references to this online as "Modern Nothern Soul"... I am struggling with the concept of what normal northern soul is to be honest, but with this, I can hear not a jot of anything to suggest that scene.
Maybe this version has been remixed out of it's original shape, so as to bear no resemblance to the first issue (?)
Otherwise, I find it pretty tedious to be honest.

Magic Marmalade 12th Aug 2016 | | CD SingleSophie B. Hawkins - Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover (1992) | I downloaded an mp3 of a Sophie B. Hawkins best of a couple of years back, and the version of this that was on it was edited a little... the original having the sound of a train passing at the start.
(I cannot tell you what the sight of this woman in ripped jeans and t-shirt crawling across the floor singing this did to my teenage self when she appeared on top of the pops with it...
let's just say she... moved me. :)
((I recall it was a remote feed in an almost completely black coloured studio, as she (and band) could not make it to UK for the live performance on the show - although I cannot find that performance, and have started to doubt myself, and wonder if I just imagined it))
|
Magic Marmalade 10th Aug 2016 | | CD SingleLeAnn Rimes - How Do I Live (Mr Mig Remix) (Dance Radio Edit) (1998) | There's something very soporific about this track...
...One of those inoffensive songs that kept making it onto play lists in doctor's surgery waiting rooms and dentists.
I always associate it with Christmas shopping in large department store piped in music.
I find myself standing in a trance dribbling as I gaze into the middle distance, having been conditioned to almost nod off whenever I hear it now... fatal. If it comes on the radio now by chance, I'm scared I'll I wake up five hours later on a traffic roundabout wearing a chicken suit, and wondering what the hell happened...
... or startled to consciousness by being body slammed to the floor by secret service agents as I wonder where the hell this gun came from.
(The Manchurian Marmalade :(
