I guess 3 3/4 ips became the standard for pre recorded reel-to-reel tapes in the UK as the cheaper single speed recorders were.that speed.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that there were 3" versions at 3 3/4 ips and 7" reels that ran at 7 1/2.

What is the spool size, 7" or smaller ?

The leader tape are different colours and say please please me part 1 and the other side part 2 so yes you can tell.
Not sure how the usa ones work as I thought their 'leader tape info' was written on the reel itself.

Now you mention it, looking at the tape itself, is there any way of knowing which side is about to play?

Agreed, just thought with tape formats it would be useful to know which 'side' songs are on

It's just jargon. "Track" has several meanings, one of which is a channel along a length of tape, on which recordings can be placed. So it's not wrong to say a two-sided mono tape has two tracks - it has one each side. But "track" shouldn't be confused with "song" in that context. After all, an 8-track cartridge might have a dozen or any number of songs.

Strange how they described the 'Sides' as Tracks.

I would have thought only 8-track cartridges would have sequential tracks, Cassettes and R2R having sides like LPs?

 I've fixed the track listing.

Great to see our first reel-to-reel. Shouldn't the tracks be listed separately, rather than as whole sides?
