Yeah I have this one Marillion misplaced childhood which has had all of the songs edited to include a radio fade in and out that needs a Promo designation

I should think a "Promo Only" type (as per 45cat) would indeed be necessary using much the same criteria as for the little ones (as pretty much as GEMS says above, really). That is, where it differs from the stock copy rather than just having a sticker or stamp on it.
Only admin can sort this though; I'm sure DD or Orbiting Cat will get to it in due course.

The 2 Lps above are indeed "Promo Only" also included in this group would be the series of Warner Bros. "Loss Leaders" Lps (you couldn't walk into a retail store and buy them)....another category should be "Record Club Lp" Capitol, Columbia House, RCA and Longines were the main Record Clubs in the States, and produced many a non-commercial/retail Record club Lp....John
Another Thought!!!....You might want to add a field that says "Record Club Cat. No."....whereas an alternate retail copy number might change a prefix (or suffix) over the years.....sometimes the record clubs would change the cat. no...
Two examples from the Capitol Record Club:
The simple version (usually used on Capitol and Capitol distributed labels)
standard stereo stock copy of The Beatles "Revolver" ST-2576
record club version: ST-8-2576
The unpredictable version of all other labels:
standard stock copy of The Beatles featuring Tony Sheridan "In The Beginning" on Polydor 24-4504
the same Lp Capitol Record Club version: SKAO-93199.....like I said....just something to consider........John

I have a fair few of the loss leaders and would classify them as LP. I appreciate that you had to send off for them but they were available for the general public (to send for) unlike an album that would have solely produced for non public (i.e. trade) use only.
The Revolver record club detail could be reflect in the notes along with the cat# showing as a secondary number.
The In The Beginning I would list separate as different label and cat#.
I think we're going to wait and see how many Promo LPs there are (One's with alternate content that is)
The only problem with waiting, is that you'll have much work to do, if the Promo Only LP proves to be a "winner" here. It's like Preventive Maintenance..., do something before a possible big problem arises. In 45cat, how long did it take to add a Promo Only 7" format?
There are lots of those LP's out there. It's merely whether a member submits these.
I'm also waiting for a "promo-only" format. I have seen a few records now, that have been described as "unreleased", while they are in fact unusual promos (e.g. this or this).

Thanks!
Yes, I think "Unreleased" is incorrect for those. They should be "LP" with a note to indicate that they are promos. I will change them.
Unreleased is for records that were planned (with an allocated Cat No, and so on) but never made it to an actual release. Not promos. Usually with "Unreleased" it would be a record that never made it to production, i.e. it was scheduled to be released but no physical copies exist.
As with all things Worldy, there are of course grey areas with that...
Interesting, there are more and more Promo Only LP's being added. Just noticed A&M Foreplay's. There will be a few 100 records in here before maybe a format of this exists. More work for the Moderators, who already have plenty to do.

Offhand, there are over 2 dozen promo-only LPs on the US Elektra label alone. US Capitol issued a few hundred PRO/SPRO series promo LPs, 1950s-1980s (heh, I've started a list.) GEMSMFAN has noted the A&M label. US Columbia is another with numerous promo-only issues. How many is enough?
