An interesting link - thanks.

I liked the comment that was made about how when the CDs took hold the scientist like so many other binned their vinyl for the new format. I was fortunate that at the end of the 80s I moved to Winchester which had an established car boot sale at the Cattle Ground. Joe Public was at that time clearing out on a huge scale which basically meant that I picked up nearly every major item in my collection for I guess around a £1 a piece over a several year period. There were three of us there every Sunday morning without fail, the other two I though a little weird as they were older but I mined their knowledge as to what to buy, rushing from one car to another trying to get first dabs on a box of records.

My collection grew every week with every major UK release from Stones/Beatles/Led Zep/Marley through to stuff (at 25ish) I had never heard of such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Miles Davies etc.

I too let my collection start to go in drips and drabs at the turn of the century but thankfully never fully went down that line. Again the trusty car boot sale came to the rescue.

Great finds are replicated now on a smaller scale these days rather than every visit; weather depending I hit the two local boots here in Pembs every Sat/Sun morning normally coming home with something worth while. It is amazing what still turns up - last weekend a Elton John DJM demo, a copy of the Red Beat 45 (sold by one of the original band members) along with another 20+ UK demos in mint all at 50p each along with a selection of UK 70/80s albums for £1 a piece.

This morning its wet so with a little reluctance I have given it a miss but don't worry, I have already checked BBC Weather, tomorrow is dry and sunny so you'll know where I will be between 6:30 - 9:30am

I think boot fairs are the last stand for bargain vinyl now...

... since getting my vinyl down and reviving my interest, I've been to a couple of fairs this summer. I half suspected it wasn't going to be as fruitful as in the early nineties, and for the most part, wasn't disabused of this notion... the first one had just one box of LPs in the entire fair! and only one stall made the trip worth while, as I picked up almost an entire collection of Jimi Hendrix Track Record Singles, a couple of Stones 45s, and a Kate Bush single (Running up that hill gatefold).

But as for charity shops, which used to be good pickins' vinyl is bust now... the carcass has been picked clean of anything good...

But, all is not lost, as the rise of MP3 has caused the same phenomenon to occur in the CD market... I've been buying Digipack CDs with spare change this last week, nobody cares about the CD now on the high street... so now is the time to buy CDs!

Picked Up a Gold Pressed SACD of Nashville Skyline for a quid yesterday!

There's still treasure to be had in the chazzas, but greater patience than ever is required...

I think all the affluent vinyl hunters must live near me then!

... here in the Medway towns there absolutely diddley squat worth having in the charity shops.

Which is why my interest is moving to CD Digipacks for that old kick I used to get from vinyl. Four of the charity shops I went in on Friday I spotted vinyl frustrated hunters rummaging bins and not fining anything...

...but I've noticed nobody cares at all about the CDs- I'm usually the only one looking at them, and finding the nineties band's digipacks I'm looking for... bought ten this last week for a tenner... plus the Dylan SACD which is listed on amazon between 20- 130 quid (Not that resale is my prime motivation, but if it's a niche in the market, and could help me fund vinyl purchases in a proper record shop, then why not?)

Digipacks have a lot going for them in my view:

1. While people have largely cottoned on to vinyl, a CD is a CD in their view, so they get rid anyway.
2. the cases are fragile like vinyl sleeves, so over time it'll get harder to find them in good nick.
3. Easy to Post if selling, and more likely to stand the rigours of transit.
4. Limited runs even for big selling titles.
5. Most (?) SACD is put in these
6. Easy to Spot among racks of standard CDs

I've started Oasis Bingo too Got D'You know what I mean?, last week, and on Friday got Stand By me EP Digis, so going to see if I can get the set!

I must admit I have a chazza near me which does a regular trade in pretty good CDs, 50p a pop, and I often come out with a handful when they have new stock in - as you say, people don't seem to be interested in looking through them so much. I like to have CDs to play in the car or in the bedroom (where at the moment we have no turntable) so suits me fine!

I've picked up a few nice folky things in there and plenty of indie stuff. I live near the hippie part of town so you do get a better class of CD in the shop :-)

Unfortunately they don't do vinyl, though the other one down the road (a proper old school dump of a place), does (much of which I donated in the first place).
