I take photos of my cds (and DVDs) to add images when Iadd an CD album etc. I often have to rotate the image on my computer to get the right orientation photos taken with my smartphone) and also to crop the image. Everything works fine and looks good - I can open and view the images with a variety of packages on my system and they are all correct.
However, when I upload them to 45worlds, they are often rotated - For example, I've just uploaded a number of images to a remastered Japanese import I have of Sheer Heart Attack and ALL the images are oriented incorrectly. TBH this is driving me nuts and not only makes me look a chump, but looks bad for anyone trying to view the same.
Is this a bug, am I doing something wrong (BTW I'm an IT Pro so doubt its something I'm doing wrong with my software) - how can I correct this?
You're not doing anything wrong. When images are taken with smartphones, they are often rotated 90 degrees. This image is actually saved sideways, and the image contains data that says "I need to be rotated". When the image is uploaded, our server notes this and rotates the image. No problems.
The problem arises when you manually rotate the image, but your image software doesn't update the image to say that it has been rotated. So when you upload it, the image still contains the data that says "I need to be rotated".
How to solve this? There is no way unfortunately. If we ignore the "I need to be rotated" marker then most images uploaded from smartphone would be wrong. If we keep the current method, then we have problems with broken image software that does not update the marker.
Possible compromises:
-ignore the rotation marker for edited images, so that you can edit your image if it appears sideways
-provide moderators with a "quick rotate" option
This is on our "investigate and fix" list. It will be solved, eventually.

Now OC has explained why, perhaps you could use your IT skills to research for a graphics software package that unsets the rotate flag(s) and let us know?
Snipper Tool is very useful indeed. It just allows you to draw a box around any part of your PC screen, and that becomes an image you can save as a jpeg etc.
So, get an image looking right on the screen - snip it out and then you have it new, with no unwanted data, the right way around.

I use Paint.net - it's quick, easy and free. Obviously from the answer it doesn't remove the rotate marker - I may see if saving it as a brand new image in Paint.net fixes this problem. If not, then I'll use the alternative which is to cut and paste into a brand new image which won't have the 'rotate' marker.

Thanks. Let us know if that works. We recommend using Paint.net so it will good if there is a solution for this.

Try the snipper tool! Could not be easier or quicker.
I am having the same problem and never had the problem before, adding over 600 images. I agree it makes me feel like a chump and makes me hesitant about adding images.

Just to update, I now get the shot I want looking correct in Paint.net then 'lasso' the image, copy and paste to new image then save it using a new name, thereby creating a completely new image which does not contain any 'this way up' information, resolving the problem.
It's a bit more work but the results are worth it.
Also for those of you interested in45Spaces, I noticed there was a world named 'Solid Body Guitars' to which I've added a couple in my colection. I made the decision to create one for non solid body guitars (i.e. acoustic and semi acoustic instruments).

I've been visiting a friend and had to use my mobile to get some images of his records. Not having reviewed the information here, I edited the images with PDN and found many appeared rotated when uploaded. 'Simple' I thought and rotated them appropriately in PDN (CTRL+G, H or J) where they were still in edit, and saved them again. 'Imagine my surprise' etc etc when I uploaded them anew and they were shown rotated the other way. I undid the last rotate (CTRL+Z), saved and uploaded them and this time they were in the correct orientation. Bah
Seems the marker starts getting confused. Next time I'll try a PrtSc when previewing the image, and paste into PDN, which should do the same as that snipper tool
