How many British performers who appeared on 78rpm records are still alive? It’s a dwindling band of stars whose career began prior to the last British 78s being made in 1961 (1960 for the major labels). From the latter days of the era in the late 1940s and 1950s we still have:

Shirley Bassey
Julie Andrews
Petula Clark
Cliff Richard
Robert Earl
Marty Wilde
Tommy Steele
Rose Brennan
Marion Keene/Davis
Teddy Beverley (Beverley Sisters)
Shani Wallis
Engelbert Humperdinck (as Gerry Dorsey)
Cleo Laine
Jim Dale
Terry Dene
Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch (The Shadows)
Jeannie Carson
Craig Douglas
Vince Eager
Mike Preston
Colin Hicks
Joy Adams (Joy and David)
Shirley Abicair
Joe Brown
Laurie London
Bernie Burgess (The Four Jones Boys)
Chas McDevitt
Ray Pilgrim
Maureen Evans
Peggy Seeger
Mandy Miller
Ronnie Harris
Tony Kinsey

Any others, particularly from the 30s or 40s? I doubt there’s anyone around who recorded in the 1920s (in Britain), unless it was a child star of some kind.

Yes, thanks, I saw that!!!

I meant British singers who were on 78s from other countries, like Mr. McCartney! :read:

I thought that might have been a reference to British Empire countries. I suppose the Beatles were on Indian 78s very late on but I’d rather stick to British 78s.

Cleo Laine is on the list. Joe Brown’s first Decca single was indeed available on 78rpm.

I thought of that too but biographical information is less common for those artists. I imagine some are still around.

I think Sheila Buxton is still with us but can't be 100% sure. There is an obit on Google but it's a different lady.

Died 1994 - thanks. Yes, I had a feeling she wasn't alive.

Her duet partner Ronnie Harris is still alive, I think. The absence of an obituary means we can only assume he is around.

I would think there may be a couple of members left from The Drifters ( but I have not looked up Obits ). Performers from the 1930s are going to be pretty young then and fairly old now, maybe a recording Parrot or Two ? Bands may still be going though personnel have changed - Military and Dance bands, and I suspect a few artists from the1960s cut demo , acetate or local record booth 78 discs in the 1950s or a bit later before they got famous.

I'm a little late to this debate, but shouldn't Cliff Richard be omitted from this list on the basis that he was born in Lucknow, India??

When Cliff was born India was British so all inhabitants of the Raj automatically became British citizens.

 Yes, it would be news if Sir Cliff wasn’t British!

I thought of Peggy but I’m unsure if she’s British, though she must have received citizenship by now!

Yes indeed. Little Joan Stansbury was on a Crown 78 from the 30s with Vera Lynn, sounding like a little girl. She could be alive but I can’t find any info.
