Does anyone know of any prog albums from before March of `72 that had at least one song that filled an entire side, or no more than 2 songs on a side?
The only ones I can think of are "Atom Heart Mother" by Pink Floyd, "Cirkus" by King Crimson and "Tarkus" by ELP. I haven't checked The Nice or Genesis, yet but have checked Yes, Mike Oldfield and one other band whose name I can't recall. "Thick As A Brick" was my starting point. I'm trying to find any that came out before that.

There were quite a few, the ones that immediately spring to mind are:
Side B of McDonald And Giles' album on Island had just one track, "Birdman", albeit comprised of 6 sections. Does this count?
Also the first side of This Is.. Gracious has just one track, "Supernova", although this has four sections. (The album was recorded in 1971 and scheduled for release but was delayed until the following year.)
There are a number of albums with just two tracks on a side, including King Crimson's "In The Court Of The Crimson King" and Wishbone Ash's debut LP.
"Moving Waves" by Focus has just one track, "Eruption" on side B.

..and possibly the earliest single track side was on Colosseum's "Valentyne Suite" album, released in November 1969, the title track occupying all of side B.

Iron Butterfly's In-a-gadda-da-vida is a whole side and is a fine precursor to prog via garage and psych.

I forgot about Birdman but, is iit actually prog?
Wasn't Moving Waves from `73? Okay, over here it was Dec. 72 so, that's why I figured `73.
Could've swore there were 3 songs on side 2 of Crimson King.
I didn't forget about Meddle, I just didn't think it was early enough. Turns out it was! But, again, is it prog? Seems to me it's a bit more on the art rock or electronic side.

"Moving Waves" was released in the UK in October '71, and definitely only two tracks on side B of "In The Court Of The Crimson King" ("Moonchild" and the title track).
I guess it's hard to define what 'prog' is - it's all things to all people - but the McDonald And Giles album and also "Meddle" fit within the genre I'd say, being enjoyed by those who like that kinda thing!

I always figures Wishbone Ash was another hillbilly rock band.

I would consider that psych. I thought of a number of one (or 2) track sides of that era: Harumi had a double with one of the 2 having one track per side, Canned Heat's "Parthenogenesis", The first Dreadful Great album, "Love Is" and "Every One Of Us" by The Animals, Marcel Marceau's Greatest Hits, Blind Faith, Cream had at least one album with a single track on one side, Hendrix's 3rd album, "Boom" by The Rascals, "Electronic Sound", "Two Virgins", "Life With The Lions" (I think), "The Wedding Album", "Live Peace In Toronto","Fly", "Sometime In New York City", Captain Beefheart's "Mirror Man", "Uncle Meat", "An Electric Storm" by White Noise, etc. But they aren't prog.

Another LP that fits is "The Polite Force" by Egg (released in Nov 1970), which has just one track on side 2, the imaginatively-titled "Long Piece No. 3".
Love, "Da Capo", Nov 1966. Prog? Psych? ... depends on your definition.
I don't remember that having a long track. I'll have to hear it again. Most likely, I'd place it in psych. I don't think prog actually came about until `69.
I'm trying to look up Can, but I can't!! Most of what I get are Beatles albums! Why is there no drop down menu here, like at 45cat where you can select what it is you're looking for?

Yeah, thanks! It looks like there's a few of their albums with single tracks on a side! Question is, are they prog? What little I've heard of them, they sound more like jazz rock. Otherwise, I'd also consider Soft Machine.
Not at the top of this page. Just the search bar and the search button. I type in what what I'm searching for, hit the button and it takes me to a screen with LOTS of other records and another search box. This one HAS a menu, but it doesn't have anything I need to narrow my search, only a list of the possible places I can go (pages for 78's, CD's, tapes, magazines, jukebox strips, etc.).
