I am relying on the expertise of 78 collectors who know much more than me even though I am past my 70th year....Here is a short list of the 78's that I am finding it impossible to find....Do they exist at all.???..If any of them do, could you please provide a photoshot of the discs so that I can re-commence my search....Many thanks to all...
When Our Dreams Grow Old - Gracie Fields
This Year's Roses - Sydney Lipton
You Don't Have To Tell Me - Harry Roy
The Little Boy Who Never Told a Lie - Turner Layton

That is Number 3 list of 3....I will see if I get any response before putting the rest up....Any advice, information or confirmation will be most welcome and if any members can provide photographic proof that would be great.. Success rate from lists 1 & 2 is 0%...Mike

FM . These discs appear to be down the black hole of 1940 issues that got air-raided away come 1943 .

Mike,
As you've seen from many responses to your 3 lists, research of this kind isn't simple and takes time, and you only allowed 3 days between your first list and this list. By choosing 1940, you've got one of the most difficult years to start with because of various UK record industry problems at the start of wartime, and later.

I assume you are using the Steve Waters book as the source for these queries, so it would be very helpful if you could add any label and catalogue number it gives in your queries. That would save a lot of time, as we wouldn't have to search all the UK companies for issues.

And would you now update your perceived success rate please? Are we providing sufficient information and/or suggestions to convince you?

scrough - indeed come 1940 its some kind of surprise that Decca and EMI ( so far as I am aware the only TWO companies making 10in 78s by then - were Rex still independent and I wont count the discount things Woolworths and similar might be stocking), were producing ANYTHING. Dunkirk was being evacuated, Dieppe had been a disaster too , and all the kids were being evacuated back and forth out of London only to find themselves STILL facing bomb drops in Essex or Kent, though Devon and Dorset a little safer.
When I did an analysis of what had come to me from Mum's / Dad's /Aunties' collections (basically enough to fit in a cabinet under a Pye Black Box or Wind Up Player in width) I was surprised that there were a few really old (pre-1923) ones, and the majority post-1947, presumably sold cheap as 45s were starting to kick in. The same kind of proportions occur in the job lots from bins or antique shops that I have gained over the years. Mum's house, although never getting a direct hit, got enough bombs near it to blow the windows out, dislodge roof tiles, cause general damage down the chimney and kill the cat - and I can still name, if I see the 1939 voters list, the parents and children killed one way and another due to hits in the street, from machine guns, V1s and V2s. Family photos, jewellery, books and domestic china were all lost (including looted while away in the West Country), during the period too. And we were in the relatively quiet bit of London - mainly hit as bombers were dropping anything left en route from targets missed due to bad weather or whatever. Dont forget Al Bowlly (And Chick Henderson) were killed during air-raids, and similar took out other entertainment venues. Mum was packing light bulbs in a former flea-pit cinema for work (by 1943), under a leaking roof where the water was sort of contained by tarpaulins as a kind of internal tent and drainage system. After the war one of her roles was to be in charge of the Friday afternoon half hour of playing workers' records they had brought in as a change from the radio program normally played over the tannoy system.

A further consideration is cost of the records.

Dont forget our friend purchase tax (never mind the income tax and the compulsory purchase out of wages of convertable war bonds)

Imposed 21 October 1940 33 1/3% Marker T Stamp Colour Black
Varied 15 April 1942 66 2/3% Marker DT (for Double Tax) Colour Black
Varied 14 April 1943 100% Marker TT (for Triple Tax) Colour Blue

No wonder slow selling discs were culled - presumably there was a bit of advance notice of purchase tax changes. And of course Purchase Tax applied to most valve and similar equipment (radios possibly excepted due to need to keep public informed)

One regret I have is that I didn't record more of Brian Rust's (or Malcolm Laycock's) Dance and Jazz band broadcasts on Capital or BBC Radio 2. There are some still broadcast (or were) on the likes of Radio Lancashire on Saturday afternoons and similar times from newer presenters.

Finally it could be that there are transcription errors in the book, it is easy to put one line of title with another line of artist, or there are the odd deliberate copyright traps.

Another note for Scrough. That book appears to have been turned into the basis for at least two internet sites, one of which is
https://uk-charts-archive.fandom.com/wiki/Beryl_Davis_:_Stats
so the Beryl Davis and weeks active along with the Joe Loss ones can be looked up there. IF this information is incorrect its going to propogate. One has to order the book from the library and importantly then follow up the sources quoted.

The other website
hitsofalldecades.com

this was written in 2010 so predates at least that printing of the book

They're Building Another Alley For Sally

You Don't Have To Tell Me, I Know

Dated as 1941 ( T Tax Code on it would suggest this too)
