Hi all. I've been trying to put together a discography of the Columbia FB label from 1940 onwards. It's nearly complete, but there are 4 on which I have found no information. Does anyone happen to know the artists and titles on the following?
FB 2461
FB 2654
FB 2733
FB 2818
I've tried looking through the relevant issues of the Gramophone and searching the British Newspaper Archive, but to no avail, so hoping someone here can help!
Have you tried Columbia FB Variety and Dance Band Records, issue by the CLPGS? Available here. I don't have it, so can't help.
I am aware of it, but it seems too much of an outlay for the sake of just 4 entries. I'm also wary of using information from other discographies, as you can never be entirely sure how accurate they are.
I think the CLPGS would have used EMI Archives as a source. I plan to get it (along with their other books) at some point. Their publications usually have recording dates, matrix numbers and deletion dates, so a plethora of information. I have the Columbia DB book.

Good to know - makes it a lot more tempting. It would be useful (and I'm sure beneficial to their sales) if the CLPGS website gave a bit more information on what's included in their discographies!

Agreed! It would be great if they were digitised for searching. I can assure you, the books are a lot more than just simply releases with issue dates. They’re on the shelf at the British Library in London.

Mystery solved! The member mentioned was indeed kind enough to look up his copy of the CLPGS discography. In case anyone's interested, the four records are:
FB 2461. Turner Layton
If I should fall in love again.
Vagabond dreams.
FB 2654, Patricia Burke.
Rise above it-How's about !
Rise above it-The heart of mine
FB 2733. Jimmy Leach and the new organolians.
Yours

Not sure how the Internet Archive link is of help.
I see! Thanks!
Well, desperate times call for desperate measures. Maybe you can check the various artists that recorded on that series to see if any of them might've recorded on those numbers.
Glad you got it solved. I wonder if the records were withdrawn, or are just very rare.
I suspect the records are just very rare (or at least haven't survived to the present day). I'm not surprised by any of the artists - Turner Layton, Jimmy Leach & Patricia Burke all seem to have been consigned to the history books long ago (despite the first two being very popular in their day), so I doubt many collectors have hung on to the 78s by those artists, nor would they sell well on ebay. They also happen to fall between the gaps in the Rust discographies!

The CLPGS Decca F series book seems to include some releases which were scheduled but not actually issued. However, it doesn’t indicate this.
Out of interest, how do you therefore know that those records were never issued? Is there another source that lists unissued records? I didn't come across any gaps in the FB series - I had almost concluded that FB2300 was unissued, given it wasn't listed in the end of year catalogue, but it turned out to be an ARP instructional record!

I don't know for sure that these Decca records were never issued, it's just based on the evidence I have: one by Jessie Matthews from a cancelled stage production, one by Vera Lynn (I think), and one by Ted Heath. The catalogue number for the latter was actually used for a Gracie Fields release, which, somewhat oddly, isn't listed in the book. I can only assume that the authors of the book used Decca files, but didn't cross-check them with the monthly release leaflets etc. The Matthews and Lynn releases aren't listed in discographies for those artists. From memory, the Lynn titles are classified as "unissued" in a listing of her recording sessions. This is from memory, as I don't have the book (yet). There's also no photographic evidence of these records, which isn't conclusive, of course. The Heath titles may have been issued with a different number.
I'm not aware of another source that lists unissued records, but I would expect a discography to note it if that was the case (like, say, the Decca Records book by Record Information Services, which lists the 45s on the label).
