Because 78s are too big for most scanners when you attempt to scan them the labels don't lie directly on the glass of the scanner. This often makes the scans out of focus.
If your scanner is relatively flat then I've found that placing a heavy book or a pile of magazines gently presses the centre of the disc onto the glass and creates much better results.

Hmmm...must admit Dr.D, I'm not sure I fancy trying that. My scanner has a "lip" of around 0.5cm, and I fear any attempt to bend these brittle old discs that far would have disastrous result...

Aha, my scanner is quite flat so it doesn't take much to flatten them.
Will edit my post.
If anyone is taking photos and has some advice/tips then please post.

Have a look at WF-7515. I looked at one in Staples last week in Cardiff and the reviews say it is A3+ which means 329mm x 483mm so it can do a 12" cover. It was around £180.00.

Dabs who I use for my business purchase have it for £55.00.
1) Place the record so that the TOP edge of the disc is touching the glass, then scan. 2) move record so that the BOTTOM edge of the disc is touching the glass, then scan again. Decide which of the two has came out the best.
Cover any gaps on the scanner surface with paper sleeves or envolopes. Do not close lid. Works much better than placing label in the middle of the scanner

I would like your opinion on this, most older scanners like mine have a fixed focus [ie at the surface of the glass] I have used StrawberryLynn's suggestion and get this result. What do you think?

Looks like it goes a bit out of focus to the right, but quite acceptable IMO
Supposing you turned it round 90° so's the detail text is best focussed, and the 'London' logo has slightly less detail?
78's don't fit scanners, right?. We got round this by buying a cheap old HP scanner and literally sawed the sides of the top frame off. Now 10" records fit nice 'n' flush to the glass. Simples!

actually today I just decided to vandalise my scanner, I noticed that one side of the plastic surround could be lifted so I have cut it off, hey presto I can now lay my 78s flat.

I use a Mustek 600 A3 scanner which is ok up to 11 7/8 in. This is ok for most 12" disks (usually 11 7/8 in) and will almost scan the full width of a 33 album sleeve. I've seen disparaging reviews of this model, but the reviewers obviously hadn't found how to use it properly
Many people see a scan on the web site and although it is blurred they don't add a good clear scan (or photograph). Blurred images discourage people from adding clear images, I feel they are best left off altogether until a clear image is available. I think everybody wants the clearest image possible, so don't be discouraged if you think you can improve on existing images.
