I think the confusion over the title came about because the original album issued after the hit was titled "Sounds Of Silence" - the plural used because it was a collection of songs, or sounds. Ever since then, people have assumed that album title to be the song's title as well.

@whitewhale1965 good point. I just looked up the Library Of Congress copyright registration entry, dated 1 June 1964, and it shows SOUND OF SILENCE. It’s the seventh entry in the middle column of page 573:

I'm quite certain that the correct title of track A1 is The Sound of Silence. But so many labels have it as The Sounds of Silence or Sounds of Silence... even over at 45cat there are about 65 different releases that include the word Sounds. Have we had an in-depth discussion on this topic? The song must be one of the greatest ever written.

I've also noticed the Stereo album take of "I Am A Rock" is not the same take as on the original Mono 45 RPM hit version, but that's a whole other conversation... ☺

@edlongus I heard the "hum" in the intro and its on my copy of the Greatest Hits LP-the mono/stereo hybrid. I think its more noticeable on the 45 version. Also the vibes in the instrumental break really pop on the mono version.

thewillismon, when u were listening 2/timing your copy, which copy did u have (do u remember)?!? Just curious, because I have the "Bridge Over Troubled Water" album in the "Collected Works" box set, and it's all Stereo in that set. I also noticed that the Mono mix has someone humming at the beginning, after the maracas start shaking but before the lead vocals start. That humming isn't in the full Stereo versions I have heard. U can hear the humming on the direct play video below.

Wiki states: Some pressings use the single mix from 1970; reissues use a hybrid of the single and the album version from Bridge Over Troubled Water.
That's interesting, I wasn't aware of such an animal!

As BEATLEJOHN mentioned, "Cecilia" starts in Mono and after the instrumental break burst into Stereo, but it's the best sounding mix (in my opinion) because the rhythm section sounds like stomping instead of just drums!! It's thunderous!! It sounds a whole lot better than the pristine, weak mix on the "Bridge Over Troubled Water" Quadraphonic album (and I own a 2nd Yugoslavia Quadraphonic copy also).

Box scans and label scans added. Lettering on the box front is embossed.

This box set came with no inserts and only the minimal information on the back of the box.

After fifty years, finally got time to sit and listen to my records, not that many but got to listen to this one and Beatles white album which I was disappointed with but not with this one, great tracks that stand the test of time, The Boxer being my favourite.

This should be merged with the existing UK entry from 1970, as the catalogue number is the same;this is just a later pressing of an already in-catalogue item, not a "reissue" as Discogs would have it.

{Images #3432596 & 3432597} was the first variant, thus have moved it up; {Images #527464 & 527465} was pressed between late 1967 and mid-1970.
