ady_lister 20th Jul 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Moody Blues - A Question Of Balance (1970) | I'm not sure, I've only ever seen UK copies with the Pith Helmet man. The story is recounted in QoB Deluxe Edition Liner Notes. The cover artist Phil Travers had innocently enough used a photograph from a National Geographic magazine he had lying round as inspiration. But it seems Blashford-Snell realised and sued Decca for image rights in the UK and Decca were forced to put a black square over the face of offending copies till it could be re-released. Blashford-Snell then found out that London Records for the USA release had also used his image on their sleeve and successfully sued them as well...

ady_lister 20th Jul 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumBig Country - Peace In Our Time (1988) | 1st pressings come in a Gatefold sleeve which opens right-to-left (can be confusing when pulled off a shelf). Later issued in a single sleeve.

ady_lister 19th Jul 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Moody Blues - A Question Of Balance (1970) | The man on the rear pointing the revolver is John Blashford-Snell a famous old school style British Explorer. He objected to the use of his image on the cover and it was later amended to a man without a pith helmet.

ady_lister 10th Jul 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumNeil Young - Eldorado (1989) | Oceanic release to promote Neil Young & The Restless (a.k.a The Lost Dogs) Tour of Japan, Australia and New Zealand in 1989. Japan got a CD I’m not sure if they got the vinyl as well... Australia got a Cassette version and there was also a Promo 45 of 2 tracks sent to Radio Stations.
'Cocaine Eyes' and 'Heavy Love' are exclusive to this release. 'Don't Cry' is slightly longer than the version on 'Freedom' 'On Broadway' and 'Eldorado' are the same as the tracks on 'Freedom'
A couple of sources have the vinyl at 5000 copies and it’s probably the toughest Neil Young album to find on Vinyl.

ady_lister 10th Jul 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumNeil Young And Crazy Horse - Year Of The Horse (1997) | Unfortunately can't provide labels as my copy is still sealed. Kind of silly really since the opening credit to the Movie is: "Made Loud To Be Played Loud... CRANK IT UP!!!"
'Sedan Delivery' from the CD is omitted from the vinyl, presumably due to space.

ady_lister 2nd Jul 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumBen - Ben (1971) | I think this is the only Verty Swirly from the golden era that doesn't have the Vertigo logo on the front sleeve. I hope that didn't cause anyone to miss it when flicking through the racks back in the day... It's now easily a £1,000+ Record.

ady_lister 14th May 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumNeil Young - Landing On Water (1986) | Like Trans and Everybody's Rockin', Promo copies are pressed on Quiex vinyl but do not have the Quiex Sticker. Once again, hold the vinyl up to light and look for the translucent effect.
|
ady_lister 14th May 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumNeil Young - Trans (1982) | Promo Copies are Stickered and pressed on Quiex Vinyl. A test for this is to hold the vinyl up to a strong light. It should be a translucent, slightly red color.

ady_lister 11th May 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumBuffalo Springfield - Last Time Around (1968) | 'In The Hour Of Not Quite Rain' was written by a teenager Michaela Callen who won a Radio poetry competition to have her words turned into a song. The group was pretty much disbanded by this point so Furay and sometimes member/producer Jim Messina were left with the task. Good job they did as well. A strange, baroque and unsettling arrangement thats one of the highlights of the album. Was criminally left off the Box Set, presumably because Neil and Stephen dislike the album as a whole and more likely due to the legal implications of having to credit Callen and sort out royalties.

ady_lister 10th May 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumBuffalo Springfield - Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay, Jim Messina, Bruce Palmer, Dewey Martin (1973) | This compilation is best known for including a 9 minute extended version of 'Bluebird' not available anywhere else. Essentially it’s a messy jam with Stills screeching off key and not worth getting excited about. Stills hates it and vetoed it release on the Box Set. Otherwise, it’s an excellent distillation of the bands 3 albums into 4 sides.

ady_lister 10th May 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumNeil Young - Neil Young (1969) | The release history of Neil Young is very convoluted and its best off heading to wiki to learn about Haeco CSG and such like...
Its a common misconception that all no name sleeves have the original mix while Neil Young sleeves have the remixed version. The Remix was issued on the 2 color label with the no name sleeve as well. Remix copies have RS6317A RE-1 in the wax on the A Side only.
An aural test to see if you have the remix is to listen to 'Here We Are In The Years' If it plays to the end with the clunking machine sound, its the Original Mix. If it fades out, its the Remix.

ady_lister 10th May 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumNeil Young - Mirror Ball (1995) | 2LP in Single Sleeve with Insert. Has erroneous HDCD logo on back sleeve as this is a process for Compact Disc. Pearl Jam's Merkin Ball was cut at the same sessions and features Neil Young as guest.

ady_lister 17th Jan 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumCrosby, Stills And Nash - Crosby Stills And Nash (1969) | 100% Stereo only. The US might have a white label Mono folddown for Radio. But this was mixed and mastered in stereo and there is no chance of a Mono UK edition.

ady_lister 30th Nov 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumNeil Young With Crazy Horse - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969) | Slightly unusual variant there Auto. Tan label but with the original Cat# in the later Kinney Cat# sleeve. The 1st edition RSLP 6349 are on the 3-Color 'Pop Series' Label. Making this a sort of 1.5 edition.

ady_lister 20th Nov 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumTudor Lodge - Tudor Lodge (1971) | Price of this is rising all the time. Starting to rival Dr Z as the most sought after Verty Swirly.

ady_lister 28th Sep 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumFree - Fire And Water (1970) | Am I alone in thinking 'All Right Now' is actually the worst song on this album? Maybe I just heard it too many times...

ady_lister 28th Sep 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumCrosby, Stills And Nash - Replay (1980) | Compilation that actually features otherwise unavailable mixes of two songs.
