carey jeggs 12th Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumHapshash And The Coloured Coat - The Western Flier (1969) | When Mike Batt appeared on a recent episode of Pointless Celebrities.Xander was asking him about his long career, his work with The Wombles and Katie Melua etc. but when the subject of Liberty Records cropped up Batt looked panic-stricken.I could imagine his internal monologue.
'Xander's a gent but that Osman bastard is going to bring up Western Flier just when I thought it was safely dead and buried.'
The moment passed with something said about Elton John answering the same ad.
Batt sang the show out with Bright Eyes.I think a compromise had been reached.

carey jeggs 19th Feb 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Esquires [soul] - Get On Up And Get Away (1968) | After all these years I've only just noticed that the cat.number on the label starts with HA as opposed to HA-Q as it appears on the sleeve.

carey jeggs 10th Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumHapshash And The Coloured Coat - The Western Flier (1969) | The front cover picture and the reference to John Ivor Golliwog seem to have been removed for the American market.
Now on to the mystery of Michael Mayhew. He appears on one of the cover pictures together with Mike Batt and Nigel Waymouth. In the Wiki entry for Hapshash his name is one of a handful, out of the numerous personages who have passed through this outfit, not to be provided with a link.So who was he?Where has he been and what has he done since?
Well.Brenda Blethyn's husband is the former head of graphic design at the National Theatre and his name is.....Michael Mayhew.Bearing in mind that Hapshash were a very arty-farty sort of group,it seems to me feasible that this could be the same man.

carey jeggs 18th Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumPhilly Joe Jones And Elvin Jones - Together (1964) | Unfortunately in mono you don't get the benefit of hearing the Joneses trading fours,or eights,or cigarette cards,or whatever else it is that drummers trade. The general sound of the album is very Blue Note-ish.

carey jeggs 4th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumMitch Ryder - The Detroit-Memphis Experiment (1969) | No mention on label or sleeve of when this was made but judging by the logo I would guess around 1970.Also the Detroit album came out around that time on Paramount.

|
carey jeggs 27th Apr 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumYes - Yessongs (1973) | There's a nice pretentious touch at the beginning where Anderson is testing his microphone and, instead of saying 'testing testing one two',like any normal person,he la-las the bassoon passage from the beginning of Rite Of Spring.
BTW the sound is mostly dreadful.
|
carey jeggs 20th Apr 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Rascals - Peaceful World (1971) | Mother Nature Land and Visit To Mother Nature Land sound like the same track rather than the latter being a reprise of the former.I've never understood this.

|
carey jeggs 15th Jan 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumWillie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger (1975) | I've not listened to it for years and, after buying it in the seventies,I was put off buying any more of his records or any more alt.country.I don't know if it was meant as a joke but,as I recall, there's a bit where the protagonist shoots a woman dead when he suspects that she might steal his horse and gets away with it because, well hell, this is Blue Rock,Montana where horses are more valuable than women. It certainly doesn't sound as if irony is intended.
Having said which I'm now going to have to give it another listen.

carey jeggs 4th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumDion - Born To Be With You (1975) | There are two mistakes in the track listing on the back of the sleeve.Make The World Love Me instead of Make The Woman Love Me and In And Out Of Showers instead of In And Out Of Shadows.
|
carey jeggs 9th Apr 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumNeil Diamond - Gold Diamond (1973) | I saw one of these in a charity shop today. It was bent at right angles and had been turned into some sort of ornament.I was so horrified I didn't even notice what it was supposed to be.A single book-end?A clock?Maybe a magazine rack? Why do people do these things?
