A CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL
with LEROY ANDERSON
and his Orchestra
LEROY ANDERSON is an outstanding personality in many different roles---composer, conductor, teacher, performer, and arranger. He is also a paradox: a creator of serious music who has written one hit tune after another. "Blue Tango," which sold over a million records, "Sleigh Ride," "Syncopated Clock," and "Belle of the Ball" all became instrumental standards as well as dances; his serious music, such as the "Irish Suite" and the "Scottish Suite," is almost as popular. A gifted organist, Anderson also plays the piano and---to show the range of his talents---the double bass.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1908, Leroy Anderson was graduated from the Music Department of Harvard University, where he was music director and arranger for the Harvard Band. After teaching at Radcliffe, he entered the U. S. Army as a private in 1942, served with the American Forces in Iceland, and was discharged as a captain four years later.
Previous albums have shown Anderson's great variety. These recordings extend his range. They include some of the most cherished Christmas music ever composed. Their arrangement is out of the ordinary. Originally Christmas carols were meant not only to be sung but danced to, and Leroy Anderson has kept his treatments appropriately bright and fresh in spirit as well as in tempo. Altogether this is an unusual collection brilliantly interpreted.

Maybe someone has this album from 1959 and can scan the back cover. The back cover is full of liner notes and too much to write at this time, so I have combined liner notes from this album here (but not nearly all of them), with different liner notes from the 1955 Decca DL 8193 record, which I cannot find at this site. Decca DL 8193 is a very fond memory for me. It was my favorite Christmas record my mother owned when I was a youngster in the 1960s and the early 1970s. I affectionally referred to it as the "Kitty Cat Record" back then, because of the adorable front cover of the pretty and fluffy white cat in the wrapped but open, slightly shredded, red, white and green gift box with a partial look of a gorgeous, decorated Christmas tree behind him/her, all with a pretty light blue background. Probably my favorite album cover ever.
That album cover can be found here Leroy Anderson And His Orchestra as one of the three Extended Play 45s from the 1955 "Kitty Cat Record" full album.

This is a beautiful old 17th century French carol. I thought that the innocence of the alto recorder and the beauty of a full string section best portrayed the simplicity, and get the depth of this old tune.

The songs of Christmas are such a familiar part of the Yuletide season that we are often inclined to assume that they were always present, sung just as we sing them now. Many of them have actually been part of this heart-opening holiday for hundreds of years, others have joined the select company more recently. But in almost every case the carols, the hymns, the songs of cheer and well-being have only gradually acquired the form and interpretation to which we are accustomed. Like all songs that are close to the hearts and souls of the people of the world, our Christmas songs have come down to us through a long period of acclimating growth and development, homed by the subtle influences of generations of singers.
Every creative singer brings to these songs a little bit of himself, adding one more expressive shading to their slow, painstaking evolution. The deep understanding and the fresh, clear meaning with which Harry Belafonte has given vivid new life to folk songs from all corners of the world he now applies to these most universal of folk songs. He has brought to this program of Christmas songs the same searching curiosity that has made his repertoire of other types of songs unique. He mingles the warmly familiar (Silent Night; God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen; Christmas Is Coming) with less widely known treasures--the appealing Where the Little Jesus Sleeps and the compelling A Star in the East, for instance. He moves well off the beaten track to bring us that memorable poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, in a striking musical setting. And if the tune of Jehovah the Lord Will Provide sends a wry smile flickering across the lips of those who remember the Great Depression, it may be because they suddenly remember that it also served as the melody of a topical song of that day, inelegantly titled Hallelujah, I'm a Bum.
Through it all there is a deep spirit of reverence, a spirit of good cheer and good will, and that feeling of closeness and mutuality that is the essence of Christmastime. As every Belafonte follower knows, he moves easily and vividly from boisterousness to tenderness, from merriment to soul-searching. All those qualities are in these Christmas songs, plus one other inimitable quality--the vibrant, moving, unforgettable voice and style of Harry Belafonte.

By now in New York City, there's snow
on the ground
And out in California, the sunshine's
falling down
And, maybe down in Memphis, Grace-
land's all in lights
And in Atlanta, Georgia, there's peace
on earth tonight
Chorus:
Christmas in Dixie
It's snowin' in the pines
Merry Christmas from Dixie
To everyone tonight
It's windy in Chicago. The kids are out
of school
There's magic in Motown. The city's on
the move
In Jackson, Mississippi, to Charlotte,
Caroline
And all across the nation, it's the peace-
ful Christmas time
Chorus:
Christmas in Dixie
It's snowin' in the pines
Merry Christmas from Dixie
To everyone tonight
And from Fort Payne, Alabama
(spoken)
God bless y'all...We love ya...Happy
New Year...Good night
Merry Christmas...Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas !
These are some of my favorite hymns and carols, sung especially for you during this joyous season, and I hope you'll enjoy them. Christmas has always been a time for music-a home should be full of it. And some of the most beautiful music I know is contained in these songs. They are all wonderful expressions of the spirit of Christmas, and I've tried to convey that feeling in my singing. With all best wishes for this glorious season,

MERRY CHRISTMAS MUSIC
LPM
1243
The moods of the Christmas Season are many and wondrous. They speak of joy and of hope, of laughter and love, of warmth, and of peace-on-earth, good-will to all men. These moods, and the other emotions of the Christmas holiday, are familiar to all of us, each mood is beautifully expressed through music and each one is touched with a special magic of the Season.
There was magic, remember, in that week before Christmas when the snow fell thickly, leaving the ground a spotless carpet of white. You had stopped at the store, you had bought a couple of gifts, and as you walked home that quiet night, you walked in a veritable wonderland of winter. The air was cold and crisp. The stars shone brightly. There was joy and wonder in your heart. And it was all because of Christmas.
There is magic, too, in the legend of jolly Old Saint Nick. In all homes a bright fire must be kept and food displayed in plain sight on the kitchen table or on a window ledge the night before Christmas. Santa Claus, being the plump man that he is, and with all the work he has to do, will find a moment to stop and eat. He always has; he always will. So be it. Let no man tell you differently.
The first sleigh ride and the singing of the Carols . . . Silent Night, surely the most beautiful song ever written . . . and Jingle Bells, the most popular. Chestnuts roasting over an open fire. . . . Hundreds of cookies baked and put away for safe keeping until the week of Christmas. . . . Children laughing as they build the Christmas snow man. . . . The pleasure mom and dad derive when they ask to help and are permitted to do so. . . . The holly and the mistletoe. . . . The hiding of the gifts. . . . The trying to find them, and sometimes succeeding. . . . The silver and gold, red and green of the wrappings. . . . The buying of the tree. . . . The tree trimming. . . . The tinsel, the old ornaments, the new ones, and the star at the top. We know these moods well, for these are the lighter moods of Christmas. The other moods of the holiday are just as familiar, but they bring with them a closer look at the real meaning of Christmas.
Home for Christmas! Those three words mean more to more people perhaps than any other words in the English language. And why shouldn't they? Home to family and to friends, to warmth and to love, to peace and to quiet. This feeling is so much a part of Christmas.
The better part of Christmas is, of course, the reason for Christmas. At church or at home, to piano accompaniment or to pipe-organ background, it is the familiar and beloved Christmas Carols that express so simply and so eloquently the true meaning of Christmas. No matter how often we sing them during the days of Christmas, the Carols never fail to inspire. Songs of faith for people of faith, they offer the most blessed mood of the Season.
Surely there is something for everyone in these moods and melodies of the Christmas Season. A memory of another Christmas, perhaps. . . . The warmth of a fire. . . . The smile of friends. . . . The white winter's landscape. . . . The happy shouts of children on a sleigh ride. . . . The holiday dinner and all the good things to eat. . . . The church, the Carols, and the service of worship.
What better artist to present these moods of Christmas time than Perry Como. Above all, the songs he sings in this album are songs of sincerity. And Perry Como has proved time and time again that he is uniquely gifted when it comes to expressing sincerity and understanding. Perhaps this is because Perry Como himself is a sincere, warm-hearted person.
For a Merrier Christmas, then, here is some Merry, Merry Christmas Music . . . beautifully interpreted by a man who has the honesty and the feeling, the ease, the naturalness and the integrity, to present the Spirit of Christmas in the Music of Christmas. . . .

Around the Christmas Tree
LPM
3133
The gathering of friends, preparation of the holiday feast and, above all, the singing of beloved carols, are vital part of today's festivities about the Christmas tree. A binding force in family life, the magical evergreen extends like a beacon into hearts young and old, near and far.
It is for the enjoyment of all such listeners that this collection of AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE is dedicated. To the earlier release PERRY COMO SINGS MERRY CHRISTMAS MUSIC it fulfills the promise of an outstanding sequel.
Track B3 is just so perfectly gorgeous and majestic. This is most definitely one of the great maestro Mantovani and His Orchestra's most beautiful efforts. What a magnificent piece of beautiful music. My mother always loved Mantovani best among the legendary 20th century orchestra - easy listening - instrumental artists, and I consider him my top favorite as well, though the great Percy Faith and His Orchestra would be a close second place. Something about Annunzio Paolo Mantovani arrangements is just extra special though. "While Shepherds Watched" (or the full title "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks") is more in the category of a hymn, and not just a mere Christmas carol, of course. This really is about as beautiful as one can get.
