A remarkable record, one of three volumes it covers very early Indonesian Rock and Pop from the late fifties till about 1962. Heavily influenced by all kind of sources like Latin American Mambo, Cha cha cha, tango, American Jazz , Rhythm and Blues and early Rock and Roll mixed with the original folk music like Gamelan, Krontjong, Sunda etc. From the Mambo king Bing Slamet (the Indonesian Bing Crosby) to Rachmat Kartolo in the Elvis Presley style, listen those Scotty Moore / Chat Atkins licks! Also Rocking’ updates of old folksongs like “Sarinande” with Fats Domino / New Orleans style Piano or a lively rendition of “Euis” by the lovely Anna Susanti with the great Nanda Kentjana band. The intriguing “Rang Talu” from the great Elly Kasim or the “Cha Cha” from Theiresa Zen not a bad track here

Joehilllouis 20th Dec 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumLilis Surjani - Gang Kelintji (1966) | Lilis Suryani born in 1948 and was as a child star already very successful in the early sixties. With her third Lp “Gang Kelintji” she delivers her masterpiece at only 18 years old. Enteng Tanamal, guitarist, arranger and bandleader also delivers one of his best performances. Highly popular and influential record in 1966.

Joehilllouis 19th Dec 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumAlwi And Oslan - Alwi & Oslan | These 10 inch records have soft paper sleeves and often come with plastic cover sheets. Its very hard to find copy's with decent sleeves.

Joehilllouis 19th Dec 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumTiga Dara Asmara - Tiga Dara Asmara Dan Orkes Marjono (1966) | Found this record last week with a dozen other 60ties Indonesian 10 inch records in a old school junk shop in Holland. What a find ! This is a great album from this girl vocal group from Surabaya.
For style think: Jazzy Mambo, updated Andrew Sisters / Sixties girl group. The music is arranged by Marjono (of the jazz sax fame). Very hard to find any info about this little known but great era of rock and Roll / Pop from Indonesia.
A good start is the Madtrotter blog for reading and for listing go to http://iramanusantara.org/

Joehilllouis 31st Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumChuck Berry - Chuck Berry On Stage (1964) | This is the second of the Dutch Chuck Berry LP releases from march 1964.
The USA release Chuck Berry - Chuck Berry On Stage has the same run order on vinyl but the wrong run order on the back sleeve. The UK and Dutch versions corrected this. The first Dutch black pressing here has "Crying Steel" re titled as "Surfin' USA". It comes with folded cover (3 sides open) in hard plastic sleeve. The later orange Version PAR-106 corrected Surfin' USA again to "Surfing Steel". How High the Moon is titled as "Instrumental sign-Off" on this record.
Most info from Morten Reff;s great Book "The Chuck Berry International Directory Vol 1"
Much to do about this record not being live. But its all in all a not so very bad, cleverly done album, where Chuck sings "live" harmony with himself, a great achievement for its time !

Joehilllouis 6th Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumDave Edmunds - Rockpile (1972) | Brilliant first solo LP and a much needed back to the roots album for the time.
Some of the greatest Chuck Berry covers ever !! Especially Sweet Little Rock & Roller. Ill keep in line with the 1971 release date. Others sources mention 1972.
*Rockpile was the first solo album by Dave Edmunds. It is principally focused on remakes of late 1950s and early 1960s hits, with a few new songs included. Edmunds plays almost all the instruments except for bass and backing vocals, which are contributed by John Williams, Edmunds' former bandmate in Love Sculpture. (*Wiki)
