Dodgy - Rain Smock
Never liked the band. Nevertheless when it was chucking it down with rain at Reading I wasn't about to let my preferences prevent me from grabbing this freebie.
The smock thing had a hood and no arms but was big enough to cover me and it also came with a sheet so you could sit down on the muddy ground.

Dodgy had a range of novelty items that were dodgy, I suppose, though probably a better way to spend their promotions budget than to blow it on a poster campaign, not sure about Dodgy condoms though.

Various Artists - Your Secret's Safe With Us...
Pulp had a Peel session 18/11/81, prior to which Jarvis had given Mr Peel a copy of a cassette of songs.
Though the front cover has a sticker stating "20 tracks...recorded specifically for this album" I don't think that is technically true, as I'm sure the Vets track is the one on the shared single. I'm looking at my copy right now and have a vague idea that there may have been a promo insert with the LP either lost or is in my brother's copy of the LP which gave more detailed info as to where the tracks actually came from.
The title of the Pulp track isn't listed in the Peel session so I'm assuming that it comes from elsewhere, maybe the cassette or another compilation.

Checking in International Discography of the New Wave I see that there is a Pulp (with female vocalist) that released a single in 1979, I don't know if there is a connection though.

Andy Warhol's Velvet Underground And Nico - Colcophoric Pictures Inc
One for the collector or the sucker, like me. Even though I'd read plenty of warnings that the film and sound was lousy I still went ahead and bought it. Why? well its very hard to get hold of, and this particular DVD also includes the Exploding Plastic Inevitable film that got projected onto the band during their early live shows, a bonus that's hard to ignore.
I will add some images taken from E.P.I. which make the whole thing look great but do note that the images pass in a blink of the eye, what you mostly see is blackness.

Review
The footage is rare, and for good reason - its terrible. What you get is a jam session/rehearsal but it appears that the cameraman has yet to learn the fundamentals of operating the camera and seems to have difficulty trying to get the thing fixed on a stand, and then he plays around with the zoom, continuously. The sound is barely audible on much of the soundtrack even though after about 50 minutes the cops arrive and cut the session after neighbours complain, the remaining footage is just people milling around the studio.
Tagged on afterwards is the short film Andy Warhols's Exploding Plastic Inevitable, which has been sourced from a video-taped copy. Images flicker sporadically on the screen and are only briefly sequenced, but you can make out the faces from the factory scene. The purpose of these films was to contribute to the light show projected onto the live band, so they are really just an element of a multi-media art experience. Many images are repeated, and the whole 22 minutes may have been looped several times, generally its fairly boring to watch without a band playing on stage.

Dying Young (1991)
Terrible. A film that I was obliged to watch as it was the date's choice and she cried all the way through. I was amused when Julia Roberts struggled to descend the steps to the young man's basement in her high heels and mini dress, I suppose it was a clause in the script to show off her legs but I just thought nurse huh?

The Stranglers - The Raven
The inner sleeve of initial copies also had a Gilliamesque caricature of Joh Bjelke-Petersen, notorious (allegedly) Governor of Queensland. The illustration used a map of Australia for his shorts, later copies just had the map of Australia and no caricature, and even later the whole illustration was removed.

Oh, and just remembered that when the LP was released you could buy the regular cover or the 3D colour cover, but the 3D cover cost something like a quid more, they were released simultaneously. Also note that the 3D cover was produced for quite some time because not all of them have the inner sleeve with the withdrawn illustration.

The Stranglers - Black And White
I have a few copies of the white vinyl freebie in storage, but the last time I looked I found that 2 of them had turned a sort of sludgey brown/grey colour and one remained brilliant white.
I know that they were all originally white so it must be a problem with the vinyl/wax changing over time, and I think finding a pure brilliant white copy is going to become harder as the years go by.

The Strangeloves - I Want Candy
Don't get too excited at the prospect of hearing "I Want Candy" (the song) in stereo, yes it is stereo and its a longer version, but it completely loses its punch and the extra bits of twiddle
just end up wrong-footing you.

A bunch of the songs on this LP were made primarily to show off production skills, so I've read, and there are also songs that just rehash an earlier hit. Its an OK compilation, though somewhat repetitive, and it doesn't have I Want Candy (in mono), so minus marks there.
For a better compilation of the Feldman Goldstein Gotteher sound, try "Smash Boom Bang", which includes I Want Candy (in mono), and a whole bunch of tracks by other bands *cough*.

The Strangeloves - I Want Candy
I bought a version of this CD about 10 years ago from Amazon.com and got sent a CDr with a crummy scanned cover !
Hard to believe but it was actually a legit pressing, the whole thing was licenced for a 'CD on demand' style operation to 'make rare recordings available once more', (something like that). Amazon did not indicate that they would be sending a CDr, and it was full price too,

So if you are reading this text then just make a mental note so that you can ask the seller if the CD is a genuine original factory made one or if it is a CDr.

The Rolling Stones - Big Hits [High Tide And Green Grass]
Wasn't there some controversy over this LP?, I think when it was originally announced it was going to be called "Could You Walk On Water?" with the back cover photo on the front and some different tracks or mixes.
Anyone know the full story?

EDIT: found some info here.
also found the article in Record Collector 169 pages 33-36, it is a rather complicated story starting with the LP that eventually became Aftermath.

Bauhaus - Burning From The Inside
The LP sleeve is a difficult one and memory may be playing tricks on me (I saw this in the Newcastle HMV megastore and nowhere else).
Anyway, if you can visualise a regular LP cover with a printed inner sleeve and then imagine that because of some technical error they jumbled up the printing order and then also made it into a gatefold sleeve with a hole cut out on the front so you could see what should have been the proper front through the hole. That's what it was like. I think. Well the copies were sealed though somebody slit one open to see inside ;)
I didn't buy the LP at the time but years later I decided I would like a copy of this weird original and tracked one down on ebay (listed as 'withdrawn sleeve'). When it arrived, so did the confusion, the one I got was not a gatefold sleeve and although it had the front with a hole cut-out and the rear with the cartoon side of the regular inner sleeve, the inner sleeve I was supplied with was actually just like the normal inner sleeve - so I'm missing the tree picture and band montage. I was considering sending the item back to the seller but decided not too, after all I didn't have any evidence to prove my case.
Does anybody want to confirm what originally happened with this release? It would be useful if you can remember from the time and not just lookup info on Discogs.

Bauhaus - The Sky's Gone Out
yes, the bonus LP is just the Press The Eject.... live LP.
I suppose it was done with the intension of pushing the LP into the charts, the better tracks mostly came out on singles so it was probably looking like a difficult sale.

[also to the annoyance of Bauhaus collectors, the stand alone release of the live LP originally came with a free single 'Satori in Paris']

Eurotrash (1993 - 2007)
Post-pub time slot, and enhanced by the beers, definitely funniest when Jean-Paul Gaultier was co-presenter, the later years got a fair bit repetitive.
The big laughs for me were when the voice actors did the supposed translations.

I do not recommend it, the only reason I did have to watch it was because my mum always wanted to watch it, ...well whatever kept her happy.
Basically its one of the most drawn-out 'game shows' that pretty much gloats on the emotional damage dished out onto the one person that has to choose boxes, and the odds are heavily stacked against them. I can't remember if goes on for 1 hour or 30 mins, but they are just picking boxes, viewers can't even get involved shouting out answers to general knowledge questions.

Roots (1977)
Alex Haley on Wikipedia. It is rather unfortunate that the Kunte Kinte in Africa text has been discredited, "Roots is a work of the imagination rather than strict historical scholarship", and Haley was successfully sued by Harold Courlander who's own novel The African was plagiarised for ideas, fiction becoming 'fact' in the process.
A better film, in my opinion, on the horrors of slavery is Goodbye Uncle Tom, which is far more direct and graphic and was researched using genuine documents and reports from the time. The film was released in 1971 and does not sit well with people who would rather you didn't see that the slaves were bought/bartered from slave markets in Africa run by African tribe leaders.

The 13th Floor Elevators - Thirteenth Floor Elevators
The master tapes are lost, so you will not hear better sounding than the original pressing of the LP. Here is a ripped mint copy, it has had some processing but is a joy to listen to, much better than any CD I've heard. Note that they sequenced the tracks to match the original text, and there are bonus tracks added after the LP tracks, listen with headphones for best results:

and if you shelled out £££ for the 'Sign Of The Three Eyed Men" boxset and found the Contact Sessions CD totally unlistenable then be extra disappointed by this excellent quality version by the same people:

I love this LP, the proper master tapes are lost so there is no chance of getting better sound quality than the original LP. And that includes all those remastered CDs that always promise the best sounding yet.
Well here is the best sounding yet, at least what we hear without spending $$$$ for an original copy of the LP, (this is recorded off a mint copy of the vinyl LP and has a bit of processing).

question is why can't the reissue companies do this?

Psychomania - BFI
Do they actually pay people to design those awful alternative covers?
I thought the BFI would be safe from the blight, that artwork has nothing to do with the style of the time the film was made.
'new artwork' covers just make it difficult to find the DVD when you are in a hurry looking in a shop for the title.
