Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Smothers Brothers - Think Ethnic | 1st pressing is on the black label.
Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - NBC's Saturday Night Live | Their 40th Anniversary show is on NBC tonight.
Bill Fick 14th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumShel Silverstein - "A Boy Named Sue" And His Other Country Songs | A perfect example of where the songwriter's version of a song is not necessarily the definitive version, in this case, Track B1.
Bill Fick 14th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumDick Orkin, Jane Roberts And Jim Runyon - The Best Of Chickenman | I believe there is a foreign pressing (UK perhaps) that has an additional track at the end of Side 2.
Bill Fick 14th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Smothers Brothers - The Songs And Comedy Of The Smothers Brothers At The Purple Onion | 1st pressings were on the black label
Bill Fick 10th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl Album[no artist listed] - The Best Of Top Of The Pops 1984 | Ah, Sam...(sigh)... Back then, I'd have drunk her bath water...
Bill Fick 10th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumDee Dee Sharp - It's Mashed Potato Time | Quite common for the time. I have post-1960 Roulette releases with a 1958 copyright date on the labels, & post-'64 Parkway releases with a 1962 copyright date on them.
It goes the other way around, too. I have a re-pressing of The Contours' "Do You Love Me" with a copyright date of 1966 on it!
Bill Fick 9th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumHank Williams - Hank Williams As Luke The Drifter | Originally released in 1953 as a 10" LP w/only 8 tracks on it.
Bill Fick 8th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl Album[no artist listed] - Victory At Sea | Is there actually a record with this one? I've come across a number of these on the "High In-Fidelity" label, & they were all (for the time) "racy" LP sleeves with no records in them...
Bill Fick 5th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Rock & Roll No.2 | Interesting that this 2nd LP has the same track line-up in both the US & UK versions, but the 1st LP doesn't...
Bill Fick 3rd Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumTommy Roe - Greatest Hits | Actually this "Collectibles" is a series of LPs put out by MCA. There's LPs by Johnny Burnette, The Sparkletones & others in this series...
Bill Fick 3rd Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumTom Lehrer - That Was The Year That Was | Strange, because this is the best album he ever cut.
Bill Fick 24th Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis | Too bad I can't help you there, my knowledge of his records is pretty much limited to US issues. "Vertigo" - great movie, by the way.
Bill Fick 24th Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Rock 'N' Roll | Yes, the US version of this LP was released in Mar/April '56, & the Shake, Rattle And Roll/Lawdy Miss Clawdy single wasn't released until Sept '56.
Even though that single had already been recorded by the time the US version of this LP was released, it was held back because Col. Parker & his cronies didn't have a cut on the publishing.
Bill Fick 24th Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis | You're in for quite a ride. Collecting his records can be mind-boggling, there's so many variations because his records were in print for so many years, & I'm just talking about the US pressings!
Bill Fick 23rd Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis | No, you have Jerry Reed Hubbard (full name of Jerry Reed), & then you have Jimmy Reed (the bluesman)...2 different people.
Released in mono only, that's how the TV special was recorded. Surprised that RCA didn't also release this in that horrible "electronically re-channeled" stereo, like they did for all of Elvis' other mono-only masters. Glad they didn't, though...
This TV special was the first time any of Elvis' live recordings were released to the public.
Bill Fick 23rd Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Rock 'N' Roll | Different track line-up than the US version.
Bill Fick 23rd Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Songs And Pictures Of The Fabulous Beatles / Introducing The Beatles | One thing to remember about these Beatles Vee-Jay counterfeits is this:
Vee-Jay lost their rights to press/release Beatles records in late '64, therefore the earliest bootleg/counterfeits of these are almost as old as the originals. They've been around a long time.
Easy rule of thumb: On all authentic Vee-Jay LPs (regardless of label style), both the LP title & artist are printed ABOVE the spindle hole...
Bill Fick 21st Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis | Quite a number of his '60s LPs had bonus photos in them. I'd have to check & see if one came with this particular LP.
Bill Fick 18th Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMSlim Rhodes - Do What I Do / Take And Give | Lucky man...
Bill Fick 17th Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Mystic Moods Orchestra - One Stormy Night | Great album, especially Side 1. Later re-issued on Warner Bros.
Bill Fick 16th Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMSlim Rhodes - Do What I Do / Take And Give | Best record Slim ever cut.
Bill Fick 16th Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMSlim Rhodes - Gonna Romp And Stomp / Bad Girl | Agreed.
Bill Fick 15th Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMBarrett Strong - Money (That's What I Want) / Oh I Apologize | Never even seen one outside of photographs. One of the last 78s (if not THE last) made in the US, not counting special one-off releases. Funny how this is on 78 & the original issue on Tamla wasn't.
Bill Fick 15th Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis Presley | Yes, to countries where RCA and His Master's Voice were separate companies, & the Nipper logo couldn't be used.
Bill Fick 15th Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Songs And Pictures Of The Fabulous Beatles / Introducing The Beatles | Bootleg/counterfeits of both this & Introducing The Beatles proper were widely available in department stores in the US in the '70s, shrink-wrapped & all. I bought one of each back then (they didn't sound bad at all) & kept them until I was lucky enough to track down original '64 Vee-Jay pressings.
Bill Fick 15th Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around | I believed it when I first played this LP from start to finish & I believe it now... I think that John intentionally designed this to be the last album to be released in his life-time.
Bill Fick 13th Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMBill Haley And His Saddle Men - Why Do I Cry Over You? / I'm Gonna Dry Ev'ry Tear With A Kiss | I have an early Errol Garner Atlantic 78 ("Miserlou" is the title of one side - I'll post it when I can dig it out), & it's on a yellow/black label, similar to the early Atlantic 45s... I'm assuming that this was their early jazz series. Evidently, their early releases were color-coded by label...
Bill Fick 12th Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMJohn Lee Hooker And His Guitar - Sally May / Boogie Chillen' | Although I usually hate re-makes as a general rule, I actually prefer JLH's re-cut for Vee-Jay in 1959. The '59 re-cut was used in "The Blues Brothers".
Bill Fick 12th Jan 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis' Golden Records | Front cover shown is original cover, with LP title in light blue, with no song titles on front. Labels shown are post-1964 labels.
