Neil Forbes 11th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 25 Rockin' & Rollin' Greats | Actually, it's not surprising that 1984(did someone mention George Orwell?) was the year of the last K-Tel LP as the company was financially going down the toilet. It's obvious that's why we never saw any CDs issued by them(were there any?) A worthy successor was Dino Music.

Neil Forbes 11th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 25 Rockin' & Rollin' Greats | @RC, you obviously don't have the album... or do you? But forgot where you filed it....! ha-ha.
Neil Forbes 11th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 25 Rockin' & Rollin' Greats | @RC, what was the title of that LP, TA-269?
Neil Forbes 11th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - The Beatles' Second Album | Dull, yes! Original?.... Hmmmm..... Jury's still out!
Neil Forbes 11th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 25 Rockin' & Rollin' Greats | 20 Dynamic Hits Vol.2 was TA-240 while its predecessor(effectively "Vol.1) was DH-810. Next cab off the rank after Dynamic Hits Vol.2 was 20 Electrifying Hits Vol.2 with the number TA-241 and its namesake predecessor was issued as EH-820. This illustrates what I said about K-Tel changing its catalogue prefixing format. And yes, RC, you're right DH Vol.2 was the last of the CBS Special Products though you had to strain your eyes to see the wording in white against a light-yellow background.
Neil Forbes 11th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 25 Rockin' & Rollin' Greats | In Australia, K-Tel had their catalogue prefixes fairly-well "fixed" by 1971. No more SH(Solid Hits), PH(Power Hits) or DH(Dynamic Hits) like they were using around 1969/70, they'd settled on TA- pop/rock, WA- country, NA- special compilations(any genre).

Neil Forbes 11th Sep 2015 | | 78 RPMEddie South - Eddie's Blues / Sweet Georgia Brown | A close-up reveals no mention of Pathe-Marconi(the French division of EMI), particular so because this issue predates by one year the merger of Columbia Graphophone Company and The Gramophone Company to form EMI, so, in all likelihood there was, as of that time, no Pathe-Marconi company.
Neil Forbes 11th Sep 2015 | | TVKojak (1973 - 1990) | RC, did you feel the earth move?... And you weren't even playing Carole King's Tapestry album.....! (Ha-ha). What I'd like to know is... how did the German TV station, Norddeutscher Rundfunk(North German Broadcasting) get hold of "clean" video in order to superimpose their German titling?
Neil Forbes 11th Sep 2015 | | TVThe Benny Hill Show (1955 - 1989) | The BBC shows from 1955 to 1968 and the ITV(Thames Television) shows from 1969 to 1989 should really be seen as two separate entities as they were on different stations. When you switch a show from one station or network to a rival, the "counter is reset to zero", as it were, and all that went before should not be associated with the newer show. A similar situation in Australia existed with The Mike Walsh Show, a talk/variety show which started on Station TEN-Sydney in 1971, then in 1976 Walsh took his show across to Station TCN-Sydney. The TEN shows should NOT be connected in history to the TCN shows. Even though the format was the same(mostly), the fact that one show ended on one station, then a new show started on another should completely separate the two shows.

Neil Forbes 9th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 25 Rockin' & Rollin' Greats | I was tricked on this one at first. A quick glance suggested US issue(going by the first set of labels) but then a close look at the rear cover revealed the true origin.... Made in USA on behalf of K-Tel UK. Both sets of labels are, I presume, British so I'll assume the WSR number is for the re-issue and they included the NE number for continuity's sake.
Neil Forbes 9th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 25 Rockin' & Rollin' Greats | On the second version of the cover are some markers that would have me put this record back on the shelf. A weird little symbol against some of the tracks, indicating them to be re-recorded. For me, that's an absolute obscenity!
Neil Forbes 9th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 25 Rockin' & Rollin' Greats | A couple of unusual things about this album:
1) It's an American issue of a British compilation(as shown on labels provided by Getalife), mainly because K-Tel USA would generally issue its own compilations, and, if compiling a set like this, would not have included any of the British acts seen in this set, and 2) It's very unusual to see the copyright warning we're familiar with appearing on American records when, at the most they would put "All rights reserved, Unauthorized duplication is a violation of applicable laws" on some but not all labels. A quick look at the back cover reveals all, it's actually a British release but pressed in the USA on behalf of British K-Tel, Ah, I see it all so clearly now...

Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015 | | TVPlease Sir! (1968 - 1972) | This is another that had a movie made of it, The late Cilla Black sang the theme(La-La-La-Lu) Centred on the Class 5C getting to go on a summer camp.
Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015 | | CinemaThe Invisible Man | A truly sad story this! His girlfriend took him home to meet her mother and she saw right through him!(ha-ha)
Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band | @RC, effectively, they switched the Beatles BACK to Parlophone! They ceased using the Apple label(except for special commemorative issues). The Parlophone label wasn't always orange, sometimes it was black with silver print, much like the examples 5 & 6 provided by Roboleyton, at least as far as layout and logo design goes.
Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Please Please Me | Ooh those long-winded all-numerical issue numbers! I long for the "good ol' days of label prefixes and 4- or 5-digit numbers like we used to have! Remember.....(cue dream sequence).
Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015 | | TVBlackadder (1983 - 1989) | @RC, thanks for that. Regrettably I still haven't seen it(my bad luck) but I might chase it up on DVD so I can watch it without those accursed TV station "watermarks" polluting the image.
Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015 | | TVBlackadder (1983 - 1989) | @Sladesounds, fair enough but I remember Rowan Atkinson from Not The 9 o'clock News and he came across as a total imbecile. That was the impression he left on me so I just dismiss him as an imbecile and leave it at that, but Tony Robinson has successfully shaken off the stigma of his Blackadder role to become a master of the TV documentary genre with extremely entertaining and informative shows under his belt.
Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015 | | TVBlackadder (1983 - 1989) | @RC, your 2/9/2015 comment: "Yes I remember he did one of your former home town" He(Tony Robinson) was in Australia to do some shows about our participation in the two World Wars(so I believe), and I think I heard something about him doing a show on Newcastle, but as yet I haven't seen it.

Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Chart Hits '81 | @RC, I take it, you HAVE seen a doctor to cure your ills!(ha-ha)
Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 20 Explosive Hits | @RC, no problems in the reference, was Majestic but we've become used to calling them K-Tel. As to Vanity Fair's tracks, perhaps the Early In The Morning was timed well for Dynamic Hits but their earlier single, Hitchin' A Ride was a spot-filler for Electrifying Hits to "make up the numbers, plus playing "catch-up".
Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 20 Explosive Hits | @RC, there's also the matter of different markets - different compilations! In Australia as "Dynamic Hits Vol.3" would contain a number of tracks peculiar to this market that would mean absolutely nothing to US or Canadian record collectors. Likewise, this 20 Explosive Hits from the USA has some tracks like Side A- 3, 5 and 8, Side B- 4, 5, 8, 9 and 10 have no relevance to Aussie record buyers.
Neil Forbes 5th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 20 Explosive Hits | Actually(I'm re-writing this post due to a realisation) I don't think the Australian arm of K-Tel(still branded as Majestic in 1971 in Australia) used the "Explosive Hits" title as EMI was using that title here from 1970 to about 1976 or so. Noting the content of this LP it ranges from about 1966 up to 1970, and still no composer credits, unless they're on the rear cover.
Neil Forbes 2nd Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumCreedence Clearwater Revival - Creedence Gold | Same artwork as for the Aussie Festival-distributed version.
Neil Forbes 2nd Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Beatles VI | Nah, we're not as bigoted as those in Birmingham, Alabama were after John Lennon's Jesus comments were misinterpreted(see documentary: Compleat Beatles).
Neil Forbes 2nd Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Beatles VI | John Lennon's complaint was valid! EMI Australia should've listened to him. All too late the proper artwork appeared - on the CD, when it should've been on the original 1964 LP. To be honest(and I have a Brit. re-issue from the early 1970s based on label design), the British cover was a vast improvement over the Aussie monstrosity.
Neil Forbes 2nd Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Beatles VI | The album is from a time when Capitol(EMI's US junior member company) was doing the usual "naughty boy thing" by non-compliance with the parent company's instructions re: album titles, content and track order. If Capitol had properly complied with EMI's "official" release titles, they could still issue compilations such as this alongside "proper" versions of Rubber Soul, Please Please Me, Beatles For Sale, etc. Though EMI Australia isn't entirely without guilt in this matter, They should've used the British cover design for the Beatles For Sale album.
Neil Forbes 2nd Sep 2015 | | TVBlackadder (1983 - 1989) | I have seen some of them, They turn up occasionally on SBS, lately they're used as schedule-fillers, keeping a time-slot "seat" warm for another show. The format is: He leaves his car behind and walks through towns and villages, and the surrounding regions, explaining the history of the area as he goes. The walks take about 3 days and these are condensed into an hour's programme.
Neil Forbes 2nd Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Beatles VI | I've had a cassette version of this for over 40 years, in Stereo too! Cat.# Capitol 4XT-2385. Used it as the master for a home-burn CD.
Neil Forbes 2nd Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - The Beatles Collection | Thing is, RC, I've stopped buying CDs some time back because I kept striking non-authentic content on discs issued by "the majors"(EMI, BMG. Warners, etc), so I gave up on commercially-made discs and now I search out vinyl(45rps singles or EPs or LP albums) and make my own CDs from those as my source.
