Diana Ross And The Supremes - Reflections
The reason why Mary Wilson appears in a nun's outfit(must be a "habit" she's developed - ha-ha) is due to the fact that Diana and the Supremes had a guest-starring role in an episode of "Tarzan", as nuns.

Are you saying that the Super Bad album replaced the Best Of A & M album in the photo promoting the Record Selector, R.C.?

Going by the label design, I figured this to be a 1973 issue. There are a number of Australian tracks on here but "Friday On My Mind"(Easybeats) does NOT number among them as it was recorded in England, produced by Shel Talmy. To count as an Australian record, you need three components: Artist/group(individual or group members born or naturalised Aussies), studio(TCS, Melbourne; Bill Armstrong Studios, Festival Studious at Ultimo, Sydney are three examples), Producer(Pat Aulton, Johnny Young, Howard Gable, etc.), not forgetting the recording engineer, but he/she is part of the studio component. As long as these components are all present, the record is dinky-di Aussie!(the composition to be recorded is a bonus if its Australian though it doesn't need to be).

Motown would sometimes mix their prefixes. Generally it would be MS, GS, SS, TS for the main labels(Motown, Gordy, Soul and Tamla, respectively) but occasionally you'll see MLPS, GLPS, SLPS or TLPS on covers but only the two-letter prefix on the label. Hard to keep track of them sometimes!

Hi, R.C., I see you've come up with the Australian K-Tel answer to this LP I posted back on 6th January. How 'bout uploading cover and labels so we can compare the two albums. I note the Aussie version has a British track included(Year Of The Cat)... We'll forgive 'em, seeing that K-Tel Deutschland GmbH used an Aussie recording in their compilation.

The Beatles - Help
Hi Phil. Thanks for the info on this album. I know the ORIGINAL issue was 1965 but it would not have had the label design as shown here. So with that in mind, we'll get our oh-so-friendly moderator to make the correction. Cheers! Actually though, I think EMI's Euro numbering system does go back quite a few years before 1969. A friend of mine has a German LP called "The Beatles Beat" on Odeon, issued back in 1964 or 65, it had this numbering system, with a 1C 062 prefix, though I can't recall the exact number on the record.

And Phil, I note you did public(read: community) radio in Adelaide, which station were you at? I too am a former community radio presenter so we have that in common, as does Record Collector, as I believe. We could use the PMs to compare notes between the three of us.

Hi, Roger, what you said may well be the case, but hey, didn't we benefit from it? You there in England and me here in Australia. Look at the goodies we were able to snap up! Did you manage to find any original late-60s issues among the early-80s stuff? I'd imagine it'd be a "mixed bag" of vintages. For me I'd found these LPs at various places and at various times from the mid-70s to the late-90s or thereabouts. And who knows, I may yet stumble across some more and so may you also. Let's keep a sharp eye out, ay?

That's funny, Phil. I always thought Fogerty was correct, but I'd seen his name spelt as Fogarty on several CCR albums and on his Centrefield album. And note I spelt CENTRE, the correct spelling in Centrefield!
And Phil, you may think those RCA Matrix prefixes are straightforward because(I'm guessing) you might've worked at RCA. But to me they're a wee bit unnecessarily overcomplicated.

Phil, as I said, it was quite faint, I could barely make it out and even now I have my doubts as to if it was "A4" But I will give you the matrix numbers if you want them, they are as follows:

Side A; HS-1642-4 X4RS-3693
Side B; HS-1643-4 X4RS-3694

Hope those numbers are of use to you.

As stated in notes, this album was also issued with track A1 as its title cut. I'd seen it at the same shop where I bought this copy, but didn't buy the alternately-titled issue(wasn't any point in doing that). PhilMH, I saw stamped in the deadwax(run-out area) something which vaguely looked like "A4", though I couldn't quite make it out properly. What would you think it means?

Hi, Phil, Just looked at the run-out area(deadwax, as you call it) and I think I detected a faint "I" stamped in there. The X4RS matrix is stamped in, the HS-matrix has been etched in, as was the LP's catalogue number. Thought you might be interested. I've another 1969 Motown issue I'm about to upload. When you see it, tell me what you think, okay?

Hi, RPFiller. Good to know they ARE original! At least you got your money's worth in that regard, though by looking at the labels, it's a bit disappointing to note the lack of composer credits. I rely on that info when I record a track into my computer(via Sound Forge) to store as an MP3 file. And to Record Collector's comment: "Looks like the cover to Majestic's 20 flashback greats", it most certainly does as I have that LP, so I can definitely confirm R.C,'s observation. It's obvious that, at this stage in its history, K-Tel was still using authentic versions in its compilations - and that was good! A great number of my MP3 files were lifted from K-Tel and Majestic LPs - gave me authentic content from which I could make my own CDs from, and when I was on community radio, I was often playing CDs I'd made at home from such files. Sadly though, in their latter years, for whatever reasons, Quite a few non-authentic tracks started turning up on K-Tel issues, particularly around the mid-1970s. So as not to get caught out, I have to audition the track to verify its authenticity before I commit it to my MP3 files.

The "reference" on the label is in the catalogue number, seen at left of label on one leg of the letter 'M' in EMI. Normally a German EMI issue would have a 5-digit catalogue number prefixed with 1C 062 (or another three-digit number for whichever series it belonged to). But in this case, EMI put the album together for Arcade to market, but likely on condition that EMI's own label design was used for the disc itself.

Roger, All you needed to do there was "copy and paste!" The contents and track order are exactly the same. I remember where I bought my copy, I've had it since about 1975 or so, I bought it at a Tandy Electronics shop when it was located in Hunter Street West, Newcastle, NSW Australia. Tandy was selling quite a few of these Motown LPs, another I bought a few weeks later was GS-942 - TAYLOR MADE SOUL(Bobby Taylor, post-Vancouvers) on the Gordy label, also issued in 1969. I've got a few 1969 vintage Motown issues I'll be uploading in the next few days. Watch This Space!

I have the original 1969 issue of this, the catalogue number was MS-685. Two sets of matrix numbers are shown at right on the original 1969 version's label, they are: Side 1 - HS-1596-2 and X4RS-2731; Side 2 - HS-1597-3 and X4RS-2732. Make of those what you will. The front and rear covers are the same except that on the 1969 issue, a small numeral, 4 appears below the Motown trademark in black on white against the black background of the artwork. On the new version, next to the word "Ended" in the title, there's a small white strip that contains some print that I can't decipher.

R.C.: "I didn't know Pickwick was still around in 1982!" You'd be surprised, R.C. I have a number of compact disc albums issued by Pickwick, featuring The Bee Gees(basically their Best Of... Vol.2 repackaged as "Smash Hits"), Cat Stevens(World Of.. repackaged simply as "Cat Stevens") A couple of Dr. Hook & Medicine Show compilations(got to find one I've misplaced somewhere), Demis Roussos and one or two others I may have picked up here or there. Yep, Pickwick were still active right up to the early 2000's and my still be active today.

Was Pickwick ashamed of this record? Look anywhere you like on this album and you'll only find the Tamla/Motown "portrait" trademark on the top-right corner of the front cover. You don't see the Pickwick brand ANYWHERE!, Not on the cover - fron or back, and not even on the labels - What gives?

I was guessing at much of this, so my info may have been somewhat confused. Thanks to Record Collector and TopPopper for filling in the blanks. I would likely guess that California Soul from 1969 would have been Tammi's and Marvin's last(or near-to-last) single together. R.C., you'll find it on Side 2/Tr.10 of 20 Explosive Hits(EMI-Columbia: TVS-3)

All that shows is someone NOT doing proper research before putting together an album cover. Either that or someone at Pickwick, totally ignorant of the era he, or she is compiling an album for, thus knowing zero, zip, zilch about the songs or the artists/groups featured.

A rare solo effort for the late Tammi Terrell (real name Tammi Montgomery).

She collapsed while on stage in October 1967 whilst performing with Marvin Gaye. Having been diagnosed as having a brain tumour she underwent treatment but died in March 1970 as a result of the illness.

MCA was also known to put the LP sides in "changer order" so that when they were stacked on the spindle, side 1 would be first played, then side 2, then you pick the discs up together and turn both over, so side 3 was next to play, then finally side 4. The American Graffiti album and Neil Diamond's Hot August Night was coupled in the same manner.
