PhilMH SUBS 13th Sep 2022 | | CD AlbumAkon - Trouble | Hi Helen, 29th June 2004 seems to be the original US release date of this album - that day was a Tuesday, the usual US release day at the time. However, the Copyright Office Registration shows the "date of publication" as 26th June, which was a Saturday. It's unlikely that a CD would have been released on a weekend, so that was probably a typo by the Copyright Office. The registration does state that two songs were previously registered in 2003, so that's where that year comes from; Amazon and itunes also show the release date as 29th June 2004, as does searching on the barcode at the International ISRC database.
Things get a bit more complicated with the wikipedia entry - whilst also giving the 29th June as the US release date, it also states that other versions of the album were different, with the European version in "late 2004" being "completely altered", with three original album tracks being replaced by remixed versions of those, and the song "I Won't" being replaced by "Easy Road". Wikipedia also states that the original US version was replaced by the European version in 2006, but then the European version was changed too! All in all, a God almighty mess!
BTW, the notes on this entry apply to the next album KONVICTED, and should be removed.

PhilMH SUBS 7th Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn | For the benefit of those of you who aren't Discogs members, and therefore can't see the submission history, I'll paste below the submitter's notes that have since been removed from the front page of the entry:
"Notes.
This is a very special version of The Piper at The Gates of Dawn from the early 1970s, which had a very rare and strange black label from Parlophone. Like the other EMI labels, in 1964 the famous phrase "Sold in the UK subject to retail price conditions. See price lists", mainly to show that this was an original pressing, then removed after 1969, when the label changed to the classic black with silver lettering. Unfortunately, during this period Parlophone lost some of its most important contracts to the newcomer Harvest Records and migrated under the name of "The Grammophone Company Ltd" to Columbia Records. This piece, from in-depth research, is a so-called "mixed record": the cover was printed in England, in the Columbia plants, and in fact it does not differ at all from the first English editions, probably in 1971: the label motif is in fact in line with both the English covers of that time, and with the Parlophone label motif (the motif is the so-called "PCS-Series 2", i.e. dating back to the period 1968/1975). Instead, the Parlophone label was printed in Kenya, in a factory near Nairobi, specifically for the local market and for export to Africa and Europe. The proof is that my copy has a red sticker on the back, with the words "Assanand & Sons The Music Shop Nairobi", which was the distributor of the records in Kenya; moreover, two copies out of three in existence were purchased in Nairobi. This is a very rare record, perhaps one of the rarest in Floyd history, though little known even to collectors themselves, only two copies are known to be in circulation. The pressing of this copy took place in Kenya, in the early 1970s, most likely either by EA Records, Associated Sound, or Sapra: EMI had no pressing facilities in Kenya at that time and relied alternately on these three companies. The characteristics of the ring-groove would point unequivocally towards EA Records. EMI UK opened an office in Nairobi in 1966, but it was a coordinating office for the distribution of records in East Africa. As far as the label on the vinyl is concerned, it is very likely that "basic labels" were sent from the UK with only the "Parlophone" brand and the rim-text: all the rest of the text was added during pressing in Kenya. It may also have happened that labels that were already completely filled in were sent from the UK to Kenya. Both procedures were often adopted at that time, in order to allow the printing of editions from various foreign countries. However, the type of typeface used would clearly suggest the former. As for the cover, it was printed in the United Kingdom and then sent to Kenya. "Assanand & Sons" is the name of the distribution company in Kenya. Otherwise, everyone agrees that this is an extremely rare and previously undocumented print, and the fact that it still has the original distributor's name sticker adds to its collector's value. Associated Sound was owned by Gallo Records and had the capacity to press a total of about 10,000 vinyls per year, and until 1970 it appears to have been EMI's most popular plant for pressing vinyl for the East African market. From 1970 onwards, coinciding with the change of name from "EMI ltd." to "EMI Nairobi ltd", EMI's most used plant became EA Records which was a subsidiary of Phonogram. In September 1973, EMI outsourced the pressing to Sapra for about three years. In 1977, pressing was again in the hands of EA Records."

PhilMH SUBS 7th Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn | Labels seem to be the same as the Kenya issue in Discogs, apparently pressed in Kenya by EA Records, which was a Phonogram subsidiary.

PhilMH SUBS 7th Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJohn Lee Hooker - Mad Man Blues | Small correction to the note: the 1984 issue of this album via Sugar Hill, distributed by MCA Distributing, was CH2-9214; the CH2-92507 number came into effect after the Chess catalogue was sold to MCA Records, Inc. in August 1985, and releases showed that company name thereafter (though MCA frequently combined new pressings with old Sugar Hill covers).

PhilMH SUBS 7th Sep 2022 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Sound Stage 7 Soul Story | New scans of inside booklet pages 2-11 now added.

PhilMH SUBS 2nd Sep 2022 | | CD AlbumChuck Berry - The Great Twenty-Eight | Since I last commented on this in 2017, I have obtained an MCA Records catalogue from September 1986, and this title and catalogue number are listed in it; it is also listed in some Schwann CD catalogues from early 1988 (which I should have thought of five years ago!). I still can't put my hands easily on the magazine I was thinking of, but correction to date will be requested.

PhilMH SUBS 1st Sep 2022 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Sound Stage 7 Soul Story | New scans done for front and back of booklet, both sides of rear insert, and both discs, with original images being edited; I've asked in the forum for advice on the best way to handle the new scans of the booklet pages, as I've scanned each page separately now, rather than in pairs. Watch this space!

PhilMH SUBS 1st Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumLittle Milton - His Greatest Sides | Hi Lee, I've only just found this comment of yours, but my (hopefully) educated guess is that this was brought into Australia by one or more of the importers that were distributing Charly Records from the UK, because Charly were distributing these Green Line Chess releases there.
PhilMH SUBS 30th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumDire Straits - Money For Nothing | Probably is a duel citizen, Lee - going by the inner ring, which looks the same as a Pointer Sisters album on RCA from about the same period which has EMIDISC in the runouts, I think this would be an EMI pressing; PolyGram still used other factories at that time as well as their own Miramar, Wellington facility (sometimes even Festival, which can be recognised by the SMX-nnnnn matrix numbers on each label), and Discogs has this one as "Australasia" with no separate NZ pressing in sight, so it's highly probable that this was for both countries.

PhilMH SUBS 29th Aug 2022 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Jewel/Paula Soul Story | Sorry Doccus, distracted by other things - I should be able to get it done tomorrow (Tuesday).

PhilMH SUBS 29th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis Is Back! | Later pressings of this album had no blue borders on the covers, song titles on the back cover, a top banner on the front with the old Living Stereo logo and the RCA International logo, and a barcode on the back, but with the same label layout - see Discogs. My copy of that also has a sticker on the back cover showing the earlier UK catalogue number INTS 5141.
PhilMH SUBS 29th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJoe Tex - The Best Of Joe Tex | Not Canadian - South African. Canadian Atlantic used the same catalogue numbers as the USA, and the clues that this is South African are the Interpak (printing company) logo on the back cover, and the ATC catalogue number prefix (albums distributed by Teal? Trutone? in SA usually had C as the last letter in the prefix).
PhilMH SUBS 26th Aug 2022 | | CD AlbumWham! - 12" Mixes | Hi Magic, there was no vinyl equivalent for this as far as I can see, only the tape ("The 12" Tape") and CD ("The 12" Mixes") versions. I imagine that Platterlog compiled their listing from a release sheet provided by CBS Records Australia, so if that sheet said these were albums..... The Discogs entry for this shows the playing times for the tracks, and the total time would be somewhere around 32-33 minutes, so on that basis it qualifies as an album (some acknowledged albums in prior decades were under 30 minutes).
(Just as a tangent, I would love to know who owns the Platterlog catalogue data now, and whether they are doing anything with it; I suspect that I don't have anything near the necessary readies to buy it off them, though!).
PhilMH SUBS 26th Aug 2022 | | CD AlbumWham! - 12" Mixes | Like leonard, I would have said album rather than single because of the catalogue number starting with 4 (CBS' convention then for albums) rather than 6 (singles), but looking at Platterlog for 5th December 1988, there were several 12" mix CDs and cassettes released that week, and all listed in the albums update, but several of them have catalogue numbers starting with 6 as well as a few with 4, so it looks like CBS didn't have much idea what they were doing!
PhilMH SUBS 26th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumDyke And The Blazers - So Sharp | I say keep them together because they have the same numeric part of the catalogue number; it's only a small variation in the alpha prefix.
PhilMH SUBS 25th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumHans Zimmer - No Time To Die | According to wikipedia, the album and film were originally set to be released in March 2020 and April 2020 respectively, but were delayed to October 2021, for the same reason that many other things have been delayed the last couple of years!
PhilMH SUBS 16th Aug 2022 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Jewel/Paula Soul Story | Added some images, I'll add the rest later. As to why Fuel CDs are scarce, I think it's because they went out of business, or perhaps initially they might have been bought by a label named Airline Records (the cover designs of some Airline releases are very similar to Fuel's), but I believe that they are now owned by 43 North Broadway LLC, who have - how shall I put this? - been a party to one or two copyright disputes!

PhilMH SUBS 15th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Fatback Band - Yum Yum | Discogs entry shows that although the Spring logo appears on the back cover, the actual record has Polydor labels, in line with the Polydor logo on the front cover.
PhilMH SUBS 14th Aug 2022 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Specialty Story | If this only shows ZYX Music as distributor, then the country should just be Germany, as the Fantasy group of labels (including Specialty) was distributed by other companies in the rest of Europe.
PhilMH SUBS 4th Aug 2022 | | CD AlbumThe Supremes - The Supremes A' Go-Go | Hi Roger, the correct catalogue number for this European edition is 00602557486704, as shown on both discs and the back cover; B0026532-02 is the US catalogue number.
PhilMH SUBS 2nd Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumCreedence Clearwater Revival - Pendulum | Wouldn't the sticker suggest that this was a Jamaican release, and so merely imported into British Honduras?
PhilMH SUBS 1st Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Hello Dolly (English Cast Album) | I think that 1963 date on the labels must be a mistake, or perhaps really applies to the sheet music publication, because wikipedia's article on the musical indicates that it debuted in Detroit in November 1963, moved to Broadway in 1964, and then this London production premiered in December 1965. Supporting the 1965 date is the upside-down matrix numbers starting with an S (much clearer in the Discogs entry), meaning that this must have been mastered in 1965, and looking at the back cover image in Discogs, I think there's a 1965 copyright date there, but the image is too small and blurry to be sure; the US, Canada, Germany and New Zealand entries at Discogs are all also dated 1965. Confirmation of the copyright date on the back cover (just above Mary Martin's photo) would be good, but this is looking to be changed back to 1965.
PhilMH SUBS 27th Jul 2022 | | CD AlbumBob Wills And His Texas Playboys - The Bob Wills Anthology | This can't be a 1994 release if it's CBS Special Products, because CBS Records became Sony Music Entertainment as of 1st January 1991, and were no longer allowed to use the CBS name. The entry at Discogs is undated, but shows that the copyright credit is to CBS Records Inc., which was the corporate name used from January 1988 after Sony purchased the company, so this would be a 1988 to 1990 release.
PhilMH SUBS 20th Jul 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumHawkwind - Warrior On The Edge Of Time | Billboard and Cashbox had only brief mentions that Atlantic/Atco had signed the band, and Record World of 22nd March had a photo with a longish caption stating that the agreement was "for the United States", so I take that to mean US only. It is not unknown for artists to sign with a different label for only one country; Dusty Springfield also signed to Atlantic for the US only in 1968, because she was unhappy with the way that US Philips/Mercury handled her releases, so her two Atlantic albums DUSTY IN MEMPHIS and A BRAND NEW ME (a/k/a FROM DUSTY WITH LOVE) were Philips releases in Canada (though it seems that DIM was accidentally released by Atlantic there too!), so maybe Hawkwind were unhappy with United Artists in the US for some reason.

PhilMH SUBS 19th Jul 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumHawkwind - Warrior On The Edge Of Time | Hi mojofilter, Discogs tells me that U.A. Records, Limited was the Canadian UA company, founded in January 1972; the US company in 1975 was called United Artists Music And Records Group, Inc., frequently abbreviated to UAMARG, Inc. I don't think US labels ever used the "Recording First Published" wording, so all told, I would say that your copy is Canadian, but compare it to the Discogs entry to be sure.
PhilMH SUBS 19th Jul 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumDiana Ross And The Supremes - 1961 | Hi Helen, that's not a catalogue number, the 8010 is the release date, i.e. October 1980, and the GL is the code for the printers Garrod & Lofthouse Limited. I don't know what the TM stands for, but I don't think it's Tamla Motown, as I think I've seen it on other labels' releases. The October 1980 date is confirmed by Gordon Frewin's discography in Sharon Davis' book MOTOWN: THE HISTORY.
As this is a mono album, the catalogue number should have been TMR 9008, the S of course originally signifying Stereo, but it looks like someone at EMI forgot about that (or hadn't been there long enough to know about mono/stereo numbering conventions). I remember seeing the same thing in the 70s or 80s on a US Atlantic release that was mono, but the catalogue number had the SD prefix which meant "Stereo Disc".

PhilMH SUBS 18th Jul 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumHawkwind - Warrior On The Edge Of Time | Billboard of 29th March 1975 reported that the group had signed to Atco, and Discogs does not have a US version on UA-LA 465G, only a Canadian version - could your copy be Canadian, mojofilter?
PhilMH SUBS 17th Jul 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJackie Wilson - Nobody But You | I'm inclined to think that the album originally was planned to be a 1975 release, but Brunswick chose to delay it following Jackie's heart attack; why they then chose to release it in early 1977 is open to speculation. Anyway, I've just been through the sound recordings copyright registrations for 1975, 1976, and 1977, searching on different terms to cater for possible errors in the OCR, and this album does not show up in any of those years (Brunswick did register a handful of other things in that period).
