Agree with Hawkmarty; all UK releases of this album were as BULLINAMINGVASE on Harvest, with Chrysalis and title ONE OF THOSE DAYS IN ENGLAND only being for US & Canada releases.

Steaming pile of turd or not, it's a bit odd that this seems to have been released in the US by both Buena Vista and RCA at the same time, and I can't find any explanation for it, the closest reference in Billboard being that RCA Limited in Canada had obtained the distribution rights to Buena Vista. It may or may not be coincidental that the soundtrack for Ms. Andrews' next cinematic effort, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, was also released by RCA; she had three EPs released by them in 1957, but subsequent 45s were on other labels, so I don't know whether she signed a new deal with RCA, or the film studio just shopped the TSOM soundtrack around and RCA took the bait. (THE SOUND OF MUSIC has recently been re-released in a deluxe edition, not by RCA but by Concord Music Group, who acquired the publishing interests of Rodgers & Hart and Rodgers & Hammerstein a few years ago, so whether the soundtrack recording was part of that acquisition, or Concord picked it up later because RCA's rights had expired, I don't know).

"Right of first refusal" again, Neil. Maybe Capitol/Tower didn't get enough sales from the previous album, so they passed on this one. The parent company were known to pass on things too - some of Glen Campbell's Capitol recordings between 1967 and 1969 were issued on the independent Ember and Speciality labels (the latter a subsidiary of Ember, and not to be confused with Art Rupe's Specialty).

Possibly an early 1970 release, as this was reviewed in GRAMOPHONE's April 1970 issue, which likely came out early March, so review might have been written in February. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any mention of this album in the UK music weeklies found on the World Radio History site.

Aussie EMI probably didn't bother with this one because they had already issued the US compilation SUPER HITS a year or so before - that one didn't get a UK issue!

Not a 1960 release, that's just the phonographic copyright year. Music For Pleasure was first launched in the UK in 1965, and looking at the other Australian releases, this one would have been released in 1966.

Neil, it's country of release we go by, not country of manufacture; this is pretty obviously made for the Australian market, what with Australian address and company names everywhere, and the catalogue number is completely different to the UK MFP releases; take a look at the other releases on the MFP Australia page, and a good number of them have MFP-A as the catalogue number prefix - what do you suppose the A stands for? As for the UK inner sleeve, I wonder if that was swapped in at a later date - did you buy this new, or used?

HI, this is the HIP HUG-HER album from 1967 (Stax 717) retitled; definitely 1969 for this UK Atco version (the rights to the Stax trademark having gone to EMI the previous year, coinciding with the US label's move to Paramount).

Hi Helen, it seems that RCA retained the previous STML and STMS catalogue number series for UK distribution for a little while after adopting the ZL/WL 72000 series for some European countries, as I have a couple of similarly stickered albums, but they must have eventually got their cataloguing system sorted out so that they didn't need to do that any more!

Track A1 - the group's name is correctly shown on the cover and labels as just "Four Tops" - no definite article, though most of the group's labels after Motown had trouble grasping that fact (and Motown got it wrong at least once themselves, on their first "Greatest Hits" collection).

I only just noticed today - after having had this LP for 40+ years! - that the back cover still mentions "Five Feet of Lovin" at the top, even though that was one of the tracks chopped out for this abridged version! And to answer Record Dragon's question from 2016 - the ST prefix in the catalogue number on the 1974 single and LP was most likely just a common-or-garden mistake, other companies have done that sort of thing too (e.g. Atlantic - I'm pretty sure I have a couple of mono reissues on that label from the 70s or 80s which bear the SD - "Stereo Disc" - prefix).

The Robert Shaw Chorale - On Stage With Robert Shaw
The point you're missing is, if there was already a licence agreement - a legal contract, binding on all parties - for Victor and its successors or assignees (fairly standard language in this kind of situation, I think) to use the trademark for an already agreed period, then EMI could not have unilaterally "stepped in to reclaim their trademark" without incurring some sort of legal and/or financial consequence; that would surely have been the case then, as well as now.

I doubt that your argument would stand up in court, Neil. Whenever a company buys another company's assets (which can include licences), those assets automatically become the property of the buyer, so unless there was a provision in the licence agreement to state that the licence would be terminated if the licensee (in this case, Victor) was sold, then the buyer (RCA) is absolutely within its rights to continue using the trademark.

Image 3205873, the front-page ad from Billboard dated February 24th 1973, actually says "Album available March 1", which was a Thursday; both March 3 and March 10 were Saturdays, and nothing was ever released on that day of the week. Billboard's cover date was always a Saturday, and Billboard's date doesn't correlate to a release date.

P.S. the 1995 Ichiban Soul Classics CD claims that the Commonwealth United release was in June 1970, but doesn't quote a catalogue number for it, whereas it does quote the number for this Janus reissue, which apparently was in September 1970, just after C.U. had collapsed and Cissy's contract was sold to Janus. The CD was reissued in the UK in 2012 as PRESENTING CISSY HOUSTON, with the same tracks as the Ichiban CD, but as I don't own it, I don't know what it says about the original LP.

This Janus version would be from 1970 or 1971; the 1969 date applies to the record's original recording and planned release on the Commonwealth United label as PRESENTING CISSY HOUSTON, but it appears that version was only released in the UK on Major Minor in 1970; there is no US Commonwealth United release listed here, nor at Discogs, nor Rate Your Music.

The Velvet Underground And Nico - The Velvet Underground And Nico
I think Oakfield Avenue Music (apparently Lou Reed's publishing company from 1972 onwards) came before Sunbury Music (RCA UK's publishing company); Lou Reed's US RCA singles before mid-1973 show Oakfield Avenue as the sole publisher, but from the "Vicious" single onwards he shared publishing with RCA's BMI publisher Dunbar Music (in the US, Sunbury was RCA's ASCAP affiliate, and Sunbury Music Ltd. in the UK represented both Dunbar and Sunbury). I'm not sure where exactly Copyright Control comes in (and that's not a publisher as such, that's just the term used by record companies when the songs publisher(s) in the release country can't be determined, or hasn't yet been established) - my guess is that this was used for Reed's previous publisher Three Prong Music, which is the publisher listed on the US Verve singles by this band, and Reed probably hadn't signed a UK (or international?) publishing deal then.

Hi guys, I suspect that the texta blacking out and stickers on sladesounds' copy was done by a US one-stop on behalf of an importer in the UK; this was very common for US Columbia imports brought in by Aussie import shops. If the stickers actually have the CBS logo on them, as it sounds like 78rpm-maniac's copy does, then those would be authorized exports by US CBS for their affiliates in other countries; I would imagine that copies for US bases would fall into that latter category.

P.P.S. Billboard to the rescue! The April 6th, 1974 issue lists the first six volumes in this series, including this one, on the New LP/Tape Releases pages, all appearing under Popular Collections on page 69. Given that Billboard was post-dated, release in either late March or early April was likely.

The 1974 date possibly comes from Discogs - the entry there shows 1974 without a source, and also without label images, but this was also released in France on EMI's Columbia label, and that version shows (P) 1974 on the labels and (P) 1975 on the back cover. The correct year might be 1973, if the UK issue is anything to go by!
