Review
Take away the hype surrounding the bare chested Turner, which the majority of the media initially focused on, this is a historical romp on par with anything broadcast in recent years.

I myself am not always a great fan of this type of drama however with its violence, raunchiness, romance, intrigue and humour set against the magnificent backdrop of the Cornish coast this series draws you in and before you know it you are hooked. The characters are well cast and like all good dramas there are heroes, villains, fools and beauties.

A well written and well filmed BBC period drama that I enjoyed more than I thought I would. I would recommend that you should give this one a look, I think like me you may be surprised at how good it is.

Roll on season 4 in 2018!

The Carter Family - Amercian Epic: The Best Of The Carter Family
Review
Issued as part of the American Epic series which accompanies the TV series.

On the plus side these are original 78 recordings, restored and remastered using a mixture of analog and digital technology, therefore sounding fantastic. Pressed on 180g vinyl, housed in a heavy stock, soft touch sleeve they are a delight to hold (and listen to).

On the down side, no liner notes, incorrect listing on the label (corrected with a printed apology as an insert). Although recording dates and locations are given, simple facts such as composer credits are missing. Personally, with a record of such historical importance as these recordings are, I would like to know more details about the original 78s, such as what were the original cat#s, ideally scans of those 78 labels and details of who the personnel at the recordings were. It would also have been nice for some liner notes explaining to the uninitiated, the importance of the recordings and where they fit in with the evolution of American music (and why).

Worth buying - yes. This is classic American music that helped shape the music we listen to today.

I just think its a shame that more information regarding the recordings was not made available even as a single page printed insert and really Third Man, how did you miss the track listing error on the sleeve prior to printing? Hope someone got a slap on the wrist for that one!

Great album (and great film). Don't forget Stray Cats [Stardust] included Keith Moon in the film but I don't think he actually appears on the recordings here. Ringo Starr was in the original film "That'll Be The Day" but turned down the part in the follow up and Keith was quick to volunteer to fill his place.

If you haven't seen the film Jim Maclaine (credited with four tracks on this album) is David Essex, Jim being the role he plays in the film..

Where does the extra information being shown in the track titles come from?

As it does not appear on the label or on the sleeve it should be listed in the notes if there is specific recording information worthy of being recorded (and details of where it was obtained)

Can you confirm the title of this record is correct? It should be "Celebration" based on the cat# but without scans it needs to be confirmed.

Yes the "Prog Rock" tag is being a little stretched with this disc.

I loved as a teen watching the show. Although a fair few prog rockers made it on the show over the years I remember it introducing me to the likes of Elvis Costello, Ramones, Bob Marley and the New York Dolls all who were definitely not prog rockers :-)

Regarding country of release - Made in Europe does not necessary mean issued for sale in Europe. If someone can confirm they are for general sale elsewhere then yes amend the listing to Europe/International or what ever.

The Jazz on 33 series issued by De Agostini have been entered as UK release with a qualifying note stating "Released in UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa as a partwork by De Agostini, Vol no. XX in the Jazz on 33⅓ Series." mainly because I believe they are available there but have not yet had any collectors from those countries confirm it.

De Agostini are an Italian company but issue stuff worldwide but not necessarily making them available at the same time. A good example is this collection which started a few years ago but I can't get my hands on here in the UK.

Various Artists - The Tape With No Name
Review
I first came across this album via the free tape that was given with NME back in 1987. At the time my musical taste was expanding but had yet to understand the attraction of country music and Americana however this selection of "New Country" soon found itself being on constant play that year. Over the years the tape was hidden away but often was dug out and played and always enjoyed, so imagine my joy at finding this a few years ago at a boot sale for I think £1!

The album gives a selection of what then was the rising stars of country with a few "oldies" chucked in for good measure. Dwight Yoakam giving it all he's got, the harmony of Sweethearts Of The Rodeo, Randy Travis on the way to fame and fortune and the late great Johnny Cash telling a great story of Hank Williams.

You may not be a country fan but this album is good in that it gives you a selection of what was the best around 1987, some have gone on to be huge, some never hit the level many thought they would and some have died along the way but NME got it right when the said this album was farewell to Nash-Trash and hello to the new Hard Core of Country.

The chances are you will not find this album (only 750 pressed) but look out for the tape as they turn up quite often.

Donny Hathaway - Someday We'll All Be Free
Take your pick on the label for this box set. Although the discs show an Atlantic design I think that they are more for artistic presentation rather than the parent/issuing label.
The cover spine gives Warner Music France, the back give Rhino, Atlantic, Warner Music France, WEA, the discs although sporting an Atlantic design, Rhino features in the small print.
Given Rhino is the catalogue division of the Warner Music Group for archive releases I have gone with that as the primary label (for now!)
