Robert Johnson - I Believe I'll Dust My Broom / Dead Shrimp Blues
All the alternate takes of Robert Johnson have been issued on an album. Most are virtually identical, with the odd lick here & there that's different.

Hank Williams With His Drifting Cowboys - Ramblin' Man / Take These Chains From My Heart
A-side originally released as a "Luke The Drifter" issue, during Hank's lifetime. Re-issued as by Hank Williams following his early & sad demise.

Lowell Fulson - I Love My Baby / The Blues Come Rolling In
Actually sold quite well.We had little of this in the UK,and although there were lots of Jazz shops selling imports, these were 8/3 each, compared to 5/11 for a UK issue.Such issues as this were a welcome sight. The difference in price bought a packet of 10 Woodbine tipped, and a pint of mild.

Bud And Joe Billings - The Bum Song / Polly Wolly Doodle
Very interesting.Note how the Carson Robison / Joe Billings issues pre-dominate(Bud Billings was CR's partner,Frank Luther). This partnership seemed to have a release under one name or another at least once a week through '32 -'34.Robison toured the UK & Europe in '32,'36,'39,and had a programme on Radio Luxembourg in '36.British listeners could write in and receive a free 8" x 12" photo of CR & group.I was given one by someone who did so.

Albert Richardson - Buttercup Joe / The Old Sow
Singer came from Kent,and became sexton at Burwash Church.Died 1976,aged 71.Known as "Mr.Funniful",a range of dolls were called after him(half man,half pig).Not a full-time entertainer,though he appeared with Laurel & Hardy,Flanagan & Allen,and was a member of The Crazy Gang.Worked with famous comedian,Leslie Sarony,to whom he taught these two songs,which Sarony subsequently recorded himself.Promo photos show him dressed as a farmer,holding a sow's ear.N.B.first "traditional" style folksinger to record in the UK.(Actually,"Buttercup Joe" is the A-side of the record,although the B-side was probably more popular).{mod:Sides swapped}

Luke The Drifter [Hank Williams] - No, No, Joe / Help Me Understand
Hank made seven releases as Luke The Drifter. This was a "Cold War" critique of Josef Stalin, and was promoted by MGM to be a big seller, spending a great deal on advertising etc. When the record flopped, MGM refused for years to issue the song on an album. However, the single stayed available. Poor sales, but a great record.

Jimmie Rodgers - Frankie And Johnny / Everybody Does It In Hawaii
MODS: Re-issuing of the Zonophone 5000 / 6000 series to Regal Zonophone "T" issues (with same cat.no. as the previous Zonophone issue)took place in 1933,so as to preserve continuation, but with the new style label and number.Apparently,Zonophone stocks still held by HMV were re-labelled on amalgamation with Columbia as EMI.

Memphis Jug Band - Kansas City Blues / K. C. Moan
Thanks for clarification. In the context of "Blues", meant to refer to such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Blake, Robert Johnson, Leroy Carr etc.("Country Blues", as called). Many had high sales on some issues, but none slipped out here on UK issues. Lonnie Johnson had issues, but were jazz-based. In the broader context, female "Classic Blues" artists e.g. Bessie Smith, Victoria Spivey etc were well represented.

Bud And Joe Billings - The Utah Trail / Wednesday Night Waltz
MODS: Advice please!!.These two artists were actually Frank Luther(Bud),and Carson Robison(Joe),recording under a pseudonym for contractual reasons. When listing, should items be entered under their real names e.g."Frank Luther and Carson Robison(as Bud and Joe Billings)",or just entered under the given name i.e."Bud and Joe Billings".Have many by them to enter, and don't wish to cause extra work. Many thanks for help.

Memphis Jug Band - Kansas City Blues / K. C. Moan
Apologies. Reason for adding K.C.Moan as the A-side was info, many years ago, from 2 or 3 collectors who had bought the disc when issued. They advised that K.C.Moan had been the "main side" when issued here. Was told this by several others who hadn't bought the disc, but knew of it from then. May have been a "double A-side", as was not a parallel issue, but in retrospect.

Mattie, Marthie And Minnie - Tennessee Memories / You Can't Live With 'Em (And You Can't Live Without 'Em)
Here for the only time on record are the three Amburgey sisters, known as The Sunshine Sisters. Mattie (Opal) played banjo, Martha (Irene) played guitar, Minnie (Bertha) played fiddle. Mattie went on to join her husband, Salty Holmes, in a successful duo as Matty & Salty, and as a solo performer Matty O'Neil, subsequently as rockabilly singer Jean Chapel. Martha became Martha Carson, with a long career as a recording and TV star. Minnie, the lone survivor at 94, gave up a musical career to be a mother / wife.

N.B. The husband of Mattie, i.e.Salty Holmes, was a competent string bass player, as well as being a top harmonicist, and it is his string bass that can be heard on this record.

Vernon Dalhart - The Runaway Train / Get Away, Old Man, Get Away
Re-issue of Regal MR-346. Given a new number to tie in with a new, popular BBC radio programme by Jack Train. Available until 1956.

With the amalgamation of Regal (Columbia) and Zonophone (HMV) with the advent of EMI in 1933, Regal re-issues on Regal Zonophone still used the MR prefix, whilst Zonophone re-issues on Regal Zonophone used the same number prefixed by a T. See also HMV B-2080.

Vernon Dalhart - Wreck Of The Old 97 / The Prisoner's Song
First "million seller" country record. Artist was actually an opera singer who was persuaded to cover a popular song by George Grayson &Henry Whitter. B-side was written by his cousin. When artist realised the potential in the "hillbilly" market, he completely abandoned opera for this emerging genre, of which there had been no major sellers prior to this record. Was re-recorded in 1928 with the new electrical system (the original had been an acoustic recording), but retained the same cat. no.

Yes, along with several others in October 1954, when London started issuing 45's. Was for many years available i.e.around 20 years. In the mid fifties, she signed with Sun as rockabilly singer Jean Chapel. Sister to Martha Carson.
