RadnaNotions 1st Jul 2017 | | 78 RPMNat Gonella And His New Georgians - Plucking On A Golden Harp / Hep! Hep! The Jumpin' Jive (Jim Jim Jump) (1940) | No disrespect but I think my scans are closer to the actual colour of the labels. It is true that one of my labels is printed off-centre though.
RadnaNotions 25th Feb 2016 | | 78 RPMBill Haley And His Comets - (We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock / Thirteen Women (1954) | Thanks guys.
RadnaNotions 24th Feb 2016 | | 78 RPMFrankie Laine - I Believe / Your Cheatin' Heart (1953) | (It could just be that Cool Water was massively popular in and around Hull. It still is with me.)
RadnaNotions 24th Feb 2016 | | 78 RPMBill Haley And His Comets - (We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock / Thirteen Women (1954) | Is this release date definitely right? The dates on other Brunswick releases around this cat no would place this around July or August.
RadnaNotions 22nd Feb 2016 | | 78 RPMFrankie Laine - I Believe / Your Cheatin' Heart (1953) | I've no idea what the relative sales were (and I know they're from different years) but if the boxes I sift through are anything to go by, Laine's version of Cool Water must have significantly outsold this.
RadnaNotions 13th Jan 2016 | | 78 RPMThe Blue Mountaineers - Yes, Mr. Brown / Dreaming (1933) | Michael Thomas's site suggests all the releases on this imprint were 1933, with numbers running from 500 to around 530.
RadnaNotions 22nd Dec 2015 | | 78 RPMThe Queen's Hall Light Orchestra - Coronation Scot / The Horse Guards (1948) | I've never had something removed but it depends on who's claiming ownership. I don't think it just comes down to the fifty (or whatever) years rule. Usually you just get notified that some party or other has claimed ownership and Google will then stick adverts on the video and pay the owner some of the revenues. If I suspect that the company claiming ownership does have a legitimate claim, I take the video down myself.
It's against the rules to monetize a video containing other people's work that you've no right to use, so I imagine things are different if you're doing that. But, obviously, don't be doing that.
RadnaNotions 6th Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMMiss Margaret Cooper - Hullo, Tu Tu (1909) | The recording angel was the logo of the Gramophone Company until it adopted the picture of Nipper in 1908. The company remained the Gramophone Company but the label came to be known (colloquially at least) as His Master's Voice.
RadnaNotions 12th Jun 2015 | | 78 RPMWalt Disney's Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs - With A Smile And A Song / Dig-A-Dig-Dig (1938) | They certainly came from Disney; I believe they're from the actual film soundtrack.
RadnaNotions 13th Oct 2014 | | 78 RPMEnrico Caruso - La Donna E Mobile (1908) | I should say I'm personally not too bothered either way. But my gut feeling is that if we're recording the labels as distinct entities then the release date should reflect the "release" date of the disc shown. That is to say, if a novice (and I'm no expert myself) came and looked at this page, he could come away with the impression that the disc he's got might be from as early as 1908. (And someone who isn't used to the idea of a record staying in press for more than a month or two would probably assume it must be from 1908.)
As I say, I can live with that, but it does feel kind of wrong to me.
RadnaNotions 9th Oct 2014 | | 78 RPMEnrico Caruso - La Donna E Mobile (1908) | Comparison with the B series labels might point to this being closer to the mid-20s.
While I agree with scrough's analysis, if we continue to allow the various Gramophone labels to be entered as being distinct from His Master's Voice then we're likely to end up with the same record entered twice under two different labels but with the same release date.

RadnaNotions 6th Oct 2014 | | 78 RPMSalon Orchestra - Aloha Sunset Land / Chanson Bohemienne (1927) | Second half of 1927.
RadnaNotions 6th Oct 2014 | | 78 RPMGracie Fields - Ramona / Why Does The Hyena Laugh (1928) | Yes, late 1928.
RadnaNotions 8th Aug 2014 | | 78 RPMThe Crickets - Oh, Boy / Not Fade Away (1957) | Should have been Nora...
RadnaNotions 5th Aug 2014 | | 78 RPMThe Crickets - Oh, Boy / Not Fade Away (1957) | Was there ever a record that had less of an orchestral accompaniment than Not Fade Away? And it fades away at the end. I bet that Petty bloke didn't help to write it either...
RadnaNotions 28th Jul 2014 | | 78 RPMDuke Ellington And His Famous Orchestra - Mood Indigo / Runnin' Wild! (1933) | Just to muddy the waters, Brunswick added a zero to the front of their cat nos. in 1933. Earlier releases that were still in the catalogue just got the zero added to the front. Mood Indigo was in the catalogue for many, many years. There are early copies bearing 1068 with a different credit - and that could be a different take for all I know - but there are 1068 copies with this credit and really they're the same release as this. This is just a later copy (and seriously, it could be a lot later).
RadnaNotions 25th Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMBruno Dessa - Carmen / Der Troubadour | Some similarity to one of the "anonymous" labels on Norman Field's site (they're under 'A' here http://www.normanfield.com/labels.htm). But it's the one he doesn't identify...
RadnaNotions 22nd Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMChris. Hall - Meet Me In My Dreams Tonight / Tribute To Our Aero Heroine A M Y (1930) | According to MG Thomas's site, Chris Hall on this record is John Thorne (there's at least one song on Radio where it isn't). John Thorne was Thomas Greenhalgh. If you google those two names together you can find a few details about him.
RadnaNotions 10th Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMSound Effects - Football Crowd B.G. / Cheers | But why would just one track on side two be labelled "B.G. with drums"? It appears to be something in the audio - and it's unlikely you'd produce a sound effects record relating to a specific team. Is there something common to A1 and B9 that isn't in the other tracks?
RadnaNotions 9th Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMSound Effects - Football Crowd B.G. / Cheers | Background?
RadnaNotions 21st Apr 2014 | | 78 RPMThe Clovers - One Mint Julep / Middle Of The Night (1952) | LaurenceD's scans indicate they've been "edited" by DJA1969. I guess they weren't so much edited as replaced.
RadnaNotions 19th Feb 2014 | | 78 RPMLos Beatles - Twist Y Gritos (Twist And Shout) / La Vi Parada Ahi (I Saw Her Standing There) (1964) | Maybe it's just the scan but there are some scary eyes on that sleeve - especially John's.
I can't help thinking that something with a price on the cover can't be "promo only" in the sense that that designation is usually used on these sites.
RadnaNotions 30th Jan 2014 | | 78 RPMDorsey Brothers' Orchestra - Lullaby Of Broadway / The Words Are In My Heart (1935) | I couldn't possibly comment on which one is the right speed (but I agree with you). At the very least you get to my favourite bit 5 seconds earlier on my video...
RadnaNotions 29th Jan 2014 | | 78 RPMDorsey Brothers' Orchestra - Lullaby Of Broadway / The Words Are In My Heart (1935) | The A-side of this is one of my favourite records full stop. I know Glenn Miller was lurking in this band around this time. I seem to recall looking it up to check once it got to the bit at about 2:20 in the video below.
Incidentally my UK Brunswick copy plays quite a lot faster than that video.
RadnaNotions 17th Jan 2014 | | 78 RPMBilly Williams - When Father Papered The Parlour / Don't Go Out With Him Tonight (1913) | Especially since most of the early Phoenix labels I see look like this.
RadnaNotions 13th Jan 2014 | | 78 RPMGeorge Formby - John Willie, Come On / I Was Always A Willing Young Lad (1926) | I'm sure people knew that Formby Snr had died, but there was a lot of re-releasing of material back then. (Although admittedly that was less true by 1926 than it had been a few years earlier.) I wouldn't be surprised if a few people bought this believing they were buying the original hit by the original artist. (Like anyone who's foolishly bought a sixties compilation CD without looking closely at the sleeve notes and found arrangements awash with synths played by perms.)
RadnaNotions 12th Jan 2014 | | 78 RPMGeorge Formby - John Willie, Come On / I Was Always A Willing Young Lad (1926) | The song was written (and recorded) by Snr. Given that, you'd have thought they might have distinguished on the label between Snr in the writing credit and Jnr as the performer. It's almost as if they were deliberately avoiding informing the uninformed...
RadnaNotions 6th Nov 2013 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Charge De L'armée Française (1903) | You might have more luck trying to play the sleeve...
Playing from the centre outwards means that you get the highest bandwidth towards the end of the record. As I recall, the thinking was that most records would build towards the finish - so they cut them in a way that suits that.

RadnaNotions 4th Nov 2013 | | 78 RPMDorsey Brothers And Their Orchestra - Persian Rug / Indian Cradle Song (1928) | Nice.
