rhythmdog 8th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMDon Julian And The Meadowlarks - Heaven And Paradise / Embarrassing Moments (1957) | The label style shown here is a reissue, and the style used on the label here was used only briefly, in February and March of 1957. By May of 1957, 78's on Dooto were yellow and red with blue print. In fact, some were in the yellow/red style even in February.
Since both the 45 and the 78 in this style are more common that the original Dootone label, it is likely the case that the record was getting more airplay in early 1957 than it had gotten in 1955.

rhythmdog 7th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMDon Julian And The Meadowlarks - Heaven And Paradise / Embarrassing Moments (1955) | Both the 78 and the 45 of this record are much more commonly found on Dooto, which came into being when the success of "Guided Missiles" made the record stylus company Duotone aware of the existence of the Dootone label. (A minor mystery is that the far bigger success of "Earth Angel" hadn't registered with them).
Disregarding the fact that the owner of Dootone, "Dootsie" Williams, probably had a right to use his name on his label, they sued him. He decided to change the name of his label, first to "Authentic" and then shortly after that, to Dooto. Only during the months of February and March of 1957 did Dooto use a red label, thus we can surmise that "Heaven And Paradise" got more airplay in early 1957 and sold more copies then than it did in 1955.

rhythmdog 6th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMThe Capris - God Only Knows / That's What You're Doing To Me (1953) | Well, fixbutte, I am looking directly at my 78 of this record. The stamped matrix numbers in the dead wax are in fact, S T 1 and S T 2. Yes, certainly that more likely "ought to" point the interested discographer to Sonny Terry. But the fact is, the Capris first record used ST1 and ST2 and that's the truth, Ruth. Why? Someone ought to troll Irvin Ballen in the afterlife to find out his intentions.
Oh, and the record most definitely plays the two Capris tunes...

rhythmdog 6th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMThe Thunderbirds [Alabama] - Rock Boom Boom / Love Is A Problem (1955) | Firstly:
"Rock" has Δ 6162,
"Love": Δ 6164.
Αlthough it is rare to find an r&b vocal group recording that comes from Alabama, the label owner, Peter Doraine, had previously been involved in the Allen label in NYC (where the 5 Willows put out their first record) before relocating to Birmingham, Alabama. He was also connected to the Vulcan label (not yet documented here), another Alabama label where the Five Owls cut the immortal "I Like Moonshine"...

rhythmdog 5th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMTiny Grimes And His Rocking Highlanders, Screaming Jay Hawkins - Why Did You Waste My Time? / Coronation Jump (1953) | There are 45's of most other Gotham 78's in the range of this particular record, so it's certainly possible - although I haven't found any evidence for one and I have been a long-time fan of Jay's work. That said, I once did see (but unfortunately didn't have the $ to buy) a 45 of his Timely single "Baptize Me In Wine", and there is almost no internet evidence of that existing, either.

rhythmdog 5th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMTiny Grimes And His Rocking Highlanders, Screaming Jay Hawkins - Why Did You Waste My Time? / Coronation Jump (1953) | I find it surprising that here, on his first release, Jay Hawkins is already using the "Screaming" adjective. His other early sides on Timely show him as Jalacy (his given name) on Timely, or Jay on his earliest Mercury and Wing sides, with "Screamin' Jay Hawkins" next showing up on "I Put A Spell On You".

rhythmdog 4th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMLi'l Millet And His Creoles - Rich Woman / Hopeless Love (1955) | Thanks much, xiphophilos. I have some work cut out for me! But it fits with my experience of the label.
|
rhythmdog 4th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMLi'l Millet And His Creoles - Rich Woman / Hopeless Love (1955) | Yes, the convention is that the XSP side is the 'B' side. However, it's "Rich Woman" for me!
|
rhythmdog 4th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMFrankie Lee Sims - Don't Take It Out On Me / Lucy Mae Blues (1953) | Added promo labels. I know the convention here and at 45cat is to consider the X sides the A-sides, but "Lucy Mae Blues" will always be the side for me.
|
rhythmdog 4th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMAllen Baum - My Kinda Woman / Too Much Competition (1953) | The first press seems to be more prevalent than the press with the artist correctly shown as "Allen Bunn". The 45 might only exist as Allen Bunn, as no images with 'Baum' have turned up. In any case, he is backed on the record by his fellow Larks- the later group on Lloyds.

rhythmdog 3rd Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMLouis Prima - A Nickel For A Memory / A Sunday Kind Of Love (1947) | On the Fran Warren recording, which came out in January, Prima is not credited as a writer. However, from this recording on, his name appears in the writer credits. Both seem to have the same lyrics and musical structure, but I'm guessing the Fran Warren - Claude Thornhill is first.
