vocalion red 23rd Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMJan Garber - The Funny Old Hills / I Cried For You (1939) | Dear slholzer, all I can report concerning records I submit here, is either what I read on both sides of the labeling, and/or, what I can glean from sites like the Online Disco.Project. I am a novice at this kind of research. Some here at this site are far better than me at this. So, what I reported at my initial submission of this disc was how I saw it from both sources. I can attest to the fact that Mildred is in fact, singing on the B side. (Mp3 files for anything you see that I submit is available upon request, if in fact I ever recorded it, and I don't record absolutely every disc I have, but just send me a request, and an e-mail address, if I got it, I'll send it, and I know I have this one.)
Btw, any advanced Victor collector would know, (for an example), that on Victor # 17677, the A side should be "The Original Fox Trot" by the Van Eps Trio, and the B side should be "That Moaning Saxophone Rag" by Six Brown Brothers, right ? What would you think if you had a disc that had on side A, "The Original Fox Trot" and on side B...."Wailana Waltz" (Drowsy Waters) by Pale K. Lua and David Kaili , with a different catalog # 17767 ? I know what the Library Of Congress said to me. That it was most likely a mis-pressing and/or a mis-labeling. I have never recorded both sides of this particular disc. But one day I will, and know for sure. I know what everything should sound like. I was thinking to submit THIS disc here, but any possible controversy stopped me from doing so. At least for now. :-) Oh, yeah , I strongly suspected that Jan was a him, all along, and if you wish to inform Mr. Settlemeier about this variant, you have my permission to do so. All the information you need is already at 45 Worlds.

vocalion red 21st Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMMorton Gould - South Of The Border (1945) | Hello. I have a number of these 4 disc album types that were handed down thru the family. My question is : There is a place in 45 Worlds for 33 rpm albums. I see no catagory for 78 rpm albums here. What/where is the proper place/way, to display them at the site ?

vocalion red 18th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMHarvey Hindermeyer - The Garden Of Roses (1912) | Although my original source of information for this label says they were in business between 1912 and 1917, the online 78 discographical project gives a release date of 1909. Does anyone here know for sure ? What should be the date of this record ?

vocalion red 16th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMChick Bullock And His Levee Loungers - She's A Latin From Manhattan / Chasing Shadows (1935) | Columbia came out with a version of this song I like a lot. I forgot the date of their release. This Perfect version isn't so bad though.
|
vocalion red 15th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMColumbia Dance Orchestra - Just A Girl That Men Forgot / I'm Drifting Back To Dreamland (1923) | There doesn't appear to be "official" sides to these flag labels. They are not marked A or B anywhere. I think the only thing that comes close to an official side marking is the tiny numbers on the lower right side of the label.

vocalion red 14th Apr 2016 | | Edison Diamond DiscVernon Dalhart - The Wreck On The Southern Old 97 / I Wasn't Scared, But I Just Thought That I Had Better Go (1924) | Are you sure about all Grey Gulls being vertical ? I had entered one of my Grey Gulls to the site, and it is marked "Lateral" on the label. It is titled "Sweet and Low" on side A, by the Harmoniser Quartette.

vocalion red 14th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMThe Mirth Makers - Show Me The Way To Go Home / I Never Knew | Yes, you're right. I guess the est. could have been a typo on my part. If any out there have better info about a release date, please make a correction.
btw...The name Compo, sounds familiar. Didn't Starr-Gennett come from Ontario ? I think Decca had a branch in Canada too. I'll have to check on this because that name Compo, I know I saw it on something before. I'll have to check my Deccas. I'll post a new record with Compo as a stamper if/when I find it.

vocalion red 12th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMFrankie Masters - All By Myself / Sniffle Song (1947) | According to the Association Of Vogue Picture Record Collectors : "No written records survive from Sav-Way Industries, so it's impossible to provide production figures, exact release dates, or other factual information. All we have are the records, and the stories they tell".

vocalion red 12th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMWoody Herman - Swing Music Series No. 23 & 24 (1947) | The amazing thing about this record is, I bought a record from e-bay once, and it arrived sandwiched by this record and 3 other such Swing Series records, two records to each side of the record I bought, as packing protection. Only 2 of the Swing Series out of 4 survived the shipping trip. When played, this disc and the other one, by Herman, sound great. The other two were reduced to shards. :-(

vocalion red 10th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Mary Had A Little Lamb / Nellie Neat (1948) | This was my first record, given to me by my grandmother around 1962. This same record was bought by my grandmother for her daughter, my aunt Nelly, in the late 1940's.

vocalion red 9th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMRoy Acuff And His Crazy Tennesseeans - Steel Guitar Chimes / Steel Guitar Blues (1940) | I visited both sites where you made the hyperlinks. Concerning the OKeh version, where one was issued in '38 and another issued in '40, were the OKeh labels the same color and design? If so, how can anyone tell them apart for a proper dating ? Interesting. There were no photos given of the OKeh's but photos were there for the other labels .

|
vocalion red 8th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMLew Stone - White Jazz / Blue Jazz (1935) | So....what should the ultimate recording date be, to be listed officially on this site ? Let's choose one . I choose 1934 originally. Should it remain 1935 or reverted back to '34, or, be set at 1933 ?
|
vocalion red 7th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMHarry Evans - When The Moon Is Shining (Somewhere In France) / Sweet Emalina, My Gal (1918) | My personal favorite is side B. I love the way Lewis ends the song, with a long stretched out "My Gallll". On par with the best of Al Jolson.
|
vocalion red 7th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMLouis Armstrong - (What Did I Do To Be So) Black and Blue / I Can't Give You Anything But Love (1947) | This record is a Columbia/CBS re-release of earlier recordings by Armstrong done in the late 1920's.
Black And Blue was recorded on the OKeh label on 7/19/1929, (OKeh # 8714)
I Can't Give You Anything But Love Baby was recorded on 3/5/1929, (OKeh # 8669 & OKeh # 41204) on their "race record labels".
According to my information, this series of Columbia/CBS records was released between 1947 and 1949. They range in catalog number from 38000 to 38499.
This record was owned by my father. He bought it as a teenager in the late 1940's.
|
vocalion red 7th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMRoy Acuff And His Crazy Tennesseeans - Steel Guitar Chimes / Steel Guitar Blues (1940) | There is confusion when trying to get information about OKeh / Vocalion / CBS catalog numbers during this period of merger between these companies.
This record's label is worn out, so photos are not too legible.
|
vocalion red 7th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMLew Stone - White Jazz / Blue Jazz (1935) | Well, this is certainly a mystery. According to "the online 78rpm discographical project", Decca # 487 was listed of having a release date of 11/3/1933. There was another number listed--GB 6279, which I think is a matrix number ? Could this be a British matrix number. Decca was a British company with an American branch....at least as I understand it. Could it be that the "project" mistakenly fused two different facts together in error ? I don't know.
If any knowledgeable people here know if this disc should have a release date of 1935, please verify, then make a correction.

vocalion red 6th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMLew Stone - White Jazz / Blue Jazz (1935) | Some call this a "Shaded" label. I call it a "Sunburst" label.
|
vocalion red 6th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMHarry Voltaire's Voice Of Central Park Orchestra - I Wonder What's Become Of Sally / Lonely Little Melody (1925) | Triangle was in business from 1922 to 1925. It is considered to be an uncommon record label.
|
vocalion red 5th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMEvans, Moule, Augarde, Farkoa, Shepard - Laughs You Have Met (1907) | This old Victor is called an "Angel Back" in collector circles because embossed on the back is what some describe as an Angel. Please see photo.
|
vocalion red 5th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMStehl, Lufsky And Schuetze - Oft In The Stilly Night / Simple Aveu (1910) | Although by the picture, it looks like a 45 rpm disc. In fact, it is a full size 10 " disc. The spindle hole looks like a 45 rpm spindle hole but in fact, it's slightly smaller. A 45 adapter will not fit the spindle hole. I had to fabricate an adapter to play this record out of a hand cut cardboard insert. Then, try to hand punch a spindle hole into the insert as close as possible to the dead center of the insert. Otherwise the record would have an oblong turn on the turn table.
United Record was in business from 1909 to 1916. I estimate the release date of this record in 1910, although it could be late 1909, 1910, or even early 1911.
