annaloog ● 28th May 2023 | | BookDigby Diehl - Angel On My Shoulder (2000) | Just curious, wouldn't Natalie Cole be the author here, and Digby Diehl the co-author?
annaloog ● 25th May 2023 | | BookClarence Mullen - Thereby Hangs A Corpse | Hancer's Price Guide lists this title with Hangman's House nos. 1 - 21, but without dates for them.
annaloog ● 21st May 2023 | | BookArthur C. Clarke - 2010: Odyssey Two (1984) | Is this ($4.75) perhaps a Canadian edition? My "First U.S. edition" (Feb 1984, #30306) has a $3.95 cover price, and no Canadian price info. on the cover.
annaloog ● 19th May 2023 | | BookThomas B. Dewey - The Girl With The Sweet Plump Knees (1963) | The cover art looks as though it might have inspired this Penguin Books cover.

It looks like it's about halfway into an Immelmann.

annaloog ● 12th May 2023 | | BookVarious Authors - London-Label-Lexikon (2014) | H'mmm ... front cover (jacket) has "Bear Family Publishing"; back has "Bear Family Publications". Looks like six of one .......?

annaloog ● 5th May 2023 | | BookJonathan Valin - Final Notice (1982) | Front cover shows book no. '68973'; back cover shows '57893'.
annaloog ● 7th Apr 2023 | | BookJames White - Lifeboat (1972) | These early 1970s Ballantine Books' copyright pages normally reported the SBN as including the price code (the '-125' appended to the 9-digit number here) ... see (for example) Ballantine 02297-1.
annaloog ● 5th Apr 2023 | | BookVarious Authors - Cunk On Everything (2019) | Pen names don't have the same status as 'real' authors, and cannot be edited/corrected. Philomena Cunk has been entered as a pen name for "Various Authors". If requested, this can be deleted, and added back as a pen name for one of the listed authors. It might be necessary to select one as the main author and the other three as co-authors, in order to show the pen name.
annaloog ● 3rd Apr 2023 | | BookElmore Leonard - Tishomingo Blues (2003) | Thanks for that explanation. I have a dozen or so 1990s/early 2000s paperbacks with competing bar code numbers ... the inside cover is difficult to scan satisfactorily (without damaging the binding). I have added the back cover bar code no. to Notes.
annaloog ● 2nd Apr 2023 | | BookElmore Leonard - Tishomingo Blues (2003) | ? The entered bar code no. (while probably correct for a later edition) is at variance with the no. shown on the back cover.

Quote:
... in all such instances, omitting the final element or block of the bar-code number renders it ....
This is not correct. 978-prefix bar code numbers reserve the rightmost 5 digits for list price or other info. which is useful for retail inventory, but inconsequential for 45worlds purposes. This was a change from earlier bar code formatting which did reserve the rightmost 5 digits for the book no.
annaloog ● 28th Mar 2023 | | BookJassy Davis - Winter Warmers (2020) | For 45worlds purposes the leftmost 13 digits of 978-prefixed bar code numbers are all that need to be entered (and if the same as the ISBN-13 will be shown combined into one field); the rightmost 5 digits can be ignored.
annaloog ● 26th Mar 2023 | | BookL. Sprague De Camp - The Best Of L. Sprague De Camp (1986) | 2nd Ballantine / Del Rey printings use the same Darrell K. Sweet painting as the 1st printing, however, the cover graphic appears shifted downward so that the artist name is no longer visible.
annaloog ● 25th Mar 2023 | | BookKate Wilhelm - The Clone (1969) | Co-author names can be removed/deleted, but apparently not edited (unlike a primary author) ... please resubmit, thanks.
annaloog ● 25th Mar 2023 | | BookJohn Barth - The Sot-Weed Factor (1964) | An interesting novel (mostly) about colonial Maryland and Chesapeake Bay area, with mention (as I recall) of a number of place names in the Eastern shore. "Sot-weed" is a reference to tobacco, the cash crop at the time. I no longer have my HB copy (passed it on some dozen or more years ago), so couldn't say whether it was this edition. Now I'm reminded, though, I'll have to hunt down my other Barth books.
annaloog ● 18th Mar 2023 | | BookMarc Reiss - The Adversary (1979) | Judging from the '441' ISBN prefix, this was published after the Putnam's/Berkley/Ace conglomerate absorbed Charter Books. '441' had earlier been assigned to Ace Books.

annaloog ● 28th Feb 2023 | | BookHarry Turtledove - Werenight (Revised) (1994) | Thanks, cat. no. changed to 72209.

annaloog ● 26th Feb 2023 | | BookHarry Turtledove - Werenight (Revised) (1994) | Is the cat. no. 77209, or 72209 to match the ISBN?
annaloog ● 9th Feb 2023 | | BookBill Vaughan - Starbeams (1981) | Response to correction request: editor credits have been added to Notes. The 45 Worlds DBMS doesn't recognize mixing authors and editors; they are all either one or the other.
annaloog ● 6th Feb 2023 | | BookPoker According To Maverick - Dell First Edition (1959) | 1st Dell printing, Oct 1959
2nd printing, Dec 1959
I have added images of the title page and detail of the copyright / publishing page for the 2nd printing (I have had to tweak these a bit to minimize curvature and perspective).
There are several variations of the back cover, some showing advertisements for Jeep or Kaiser Aluminum. The royal flush design may be the earliest.
annaloog ● 4th Feb 2023 | | BookNeil Gaiman - Neverwhere (1998) | One of three souvenirs from the Avon Books booth at the Southern Festival of Books (1997?). Not bad for a first (solo) novel, kept my interest (when I finally got round to reading it), though I figured before the end which decision Richard would make. There is some nifty wordplay on various London placenames; the Underground map is included on purpose.
annaloog ● 27th Jan 2023 | | BookDavid McDaniel - The Arsenal Out Of Time (1967) | JAG, but I gather that when Ace began its transition from letter-prefixed numbers to 5-digit numbers, the G prefix was replaced with '07' (G is the 7th letter of the alphabet). I have copies of a few Vance and Farmer titles with these G-/'020' numbers.

annaloog ● 24th Jan 2023 | | BookA. Merritt - The Fox Woman (1949) | ISBN removed ... Hancer's Price Guide has Avon 214 listed as a first edition of this "complete collection of novelettes and short stories", and it is a 'normal'-sized MMPB.
Wikipedia has a listing of the individual stories.
annaloog ● 11th Jan 2023 | | BookAnthony Burgess - A Clockwork Orange (1972) | (This came up as a Random Book) My copy is a 13th printing, Apr 1973, with the same SBN, cover price and cover design (more a day-glo orange, difficult to scan just right). Presumably, the 8th - 13th printings also have these same properties.
