annaloog 14th Dec 2022 | | BookRaymond Chandler - The Big Sleep (1942) | Hancer's Paperback Price Guide #2 considers Avon Murder Mystery Monthly (digest size) as an imprint distinct from the 'regular' Avon series, with nos. 3 - 49 listed.
annaloog 13th Dec 2022 | | BookPeggy Gaddis - Farm Hussy (1954) | Acc. to wikipedia, Sylvia Erskine is one of several pseudonyms for Peggy Dern (Peggy Gaddis).
annaloog 11th Dec 2022 | | BookRaymond Chandler - Сестрёнка (1992) | What is "Убийство в Дождь"? A separate story ("Killer in the Rain")?
annaloog 8th Dec 2022 | | BookIlya Ilf - Одноэтажная Америка (1937) | JMO, but (assuming I am reading it correctly) I'd think that the publisher is Областное Книгоиздательство (Oblastnoe Knigoizdatelstvo = Regional Book Publishing), and Stalingrad was the publisher's location.
annaloog 7th Dec 2022 | | BookFritz Leiber - The Big Time (1992) | Thanks for the date info. I finally finished reading this ... interesting story concept, but not worth a re-read.
annaloog 6th Dec 2022 | | BookDavid Weber - Mission Of Honor (2010) | For '978' prefixed bar code numbers, the rightmost 5 digits are not significant, and can be ignored for Books purposes. The ISBN-13 and 13-digit bar code number 'should be' identical.
annaloog 4th Dec 2022 | | BookL. Sprague De Camp - Lest Darkness Fall (1955) | Galaxy Novels evidently did not show a 1955 publ. date, so 1949 (the date of the Prime Press edition) is understandable. Are there any differences in texts from the Holt edition, since the author's copyright is eight years later?
annaloog 28th Nov 2022 | | BookPaul Garrison [novelist] - Fire And Ice (1998) | This 'Advance Reading Copy' was another free item from the Avon Books booth at the Southern Festival of Books, like this copy of Cosm.
annaloog 24th Nov 2022 | | BookGardner F. Fox - Kothar (1973) | ?? How does this entry differ from Leisure Books 146SK? I see the same author, title, publisher, no., format, and date.
annaloog 23rd Nov 2022 | | BookGregory Benford - Cosm (1998) | My copy is an uncorrected proof which I obtained (IIRC) as swag from the Avon Books booth at the Southern Festival of Books, an annual event which attracted a number of authors, and national and local publishers.
annaloog 23rd Nov 2022 | | BookRobert A. Heinlein - Double Star (1957) | Responding to a correction request, the link to other editions has (somehow) been restored.
annaloog 22nd Nov 2022 | | BookE. E. Evans-Pritchard - Theories Of Primitive Religion (1965) | ?? The back cover image shows the publisher as Oxford University Press.
annaloog 22nd Nov 2022 | | BookRalph J. Gleason - The Jefferson Airplane And The San Francisco Sound (1969) | The posted cover [image# 906270] with Ballantine no. 01623 does not match the ISBN nos., which may be for a later (1980s) reprint. Also, the entry includes ISBN and bar code numbers, neither of which were in use in 1969, so there appears to be some confusion over the date.
As it happens, I have a copy of Ballantine 01623, the cover of which had been removed for store credit.
annaloog 20th Nov 2022 | | BookKevin Hancer - The Paperback Price Guide #2 (1982) | Main Listing: titles indexed by publisher and no., from Ace Books to Zenith, 1940s - 1970s. Despite the 6-pt. type, the info. is still useful, though now largely superseded by the WWW.
annaloog 15th Nov 2022 | | BookHarvey Kurtzman - Inside MAD (1955) | Despite its listing on the contents page, the Stan Freberg 'Backword' is the last item in the book.
annaloog 11th Nov 2022 | | BookJames Blish - The Triumph Of Time (1968) | JMO, I wouldn't think separate entries are needed for every reprint, if the title, publisher, and cat. no./ISBN do not differ. Differences in reprint dates can be handled in Notes. Otherwise, popular titles could potentially have dozens of redundant entries.
annaloog 11th Nov 2022 | | BookJames Blish - The Triumph Of Time (1968) | ? This entry appears to duplicate Avon S221.
annaloog 11th Nov 2022 | | BookKenneth Kilby - The Village Cooper (1989) | Yes, I'd think that the 11-digit ISBN is a typo. error.
annaloog 11th Nov 2022 | | BookJames Blish - They Shall Have Stars (1966) |
That entry has the original title; 5th printings show "They Shall Have Stars".
annaloog 10th Nov 2022 | | BookAugust Strindberg - Fröken Julie (2013) | ??? It looks like this NA edition was published as "Miss Julie", rather than "Fröken Julie".
annaloog 10th Nov 2022 | | BookKenneth Kilby - The Village Cooper (1989) | ISBN as shown: 0 85263 39220 (11 digits)
annaloog 6th Nov 2022 | | BookFritz Leiber - The Big Time (1992) | No price or ISBN indicated, so, while not explicitly stated, I expect that this is a book club edition.
annaloog 2nd Nov 2022 | | BookBen Bova - Prometheans (1986) | Canadian edition: TOR 53220 ... presumably differs from the USA by the back cover's ISBN / bar code display.
annaloog 30th Oct 2022 | | BookJohn Denis - Geiseldrama In Paris (1982) | Despite the prominence of Alistair MacLean's name (and bio) on the covers, the author is John Denis. There is a USA MMPB edition published by Fawcett Crest as Alistair MacLean's Hostage Tower.
annaloog 27th Oct 2022 | | BookFred Hoyle - Into Deepest Space (1975) | Cover art by Vincent Di Fate?
annaloog 19th Oct 2022 | | BookJohn Holbrook Vance - A Room To Die In (1965) | Kinnell Publications published a hardcover edition in UK in 1987, ISBN 0 870532 00 7.
annaloog 18th Oct 2022 | | BookYrsa Sigurdardottir - Abgrund (2022) | Judging from the bar code number, newly added images [3112309, 3112310] appear to be for a different edition of this title.
annaloog 15th Oct 2022 | | BookJames V. Maresca - My Flag Is Down (1952) |
Quote:
My dad's uncle wrote this book. Uncle Jimmy had a way with words and told his taxi stories like they really were (at least that's what he said)! It's a fun read and of course I recommend it as a must read for everyone!
— From an Amazon review
Reminiscences, likely exaggerated somewhat in the retelling ... one of a few hundred or so interesting-looking books I bought cheap years ago, to save for my retirement when (I supposed at the time) I would have more time to read.
annaloog 14th Oct 2022 | | BookJudith Merril - The Best Of Sci-Fi (1963) |
Quote:
cat# is wrong and should be corrected to 0543-8
That's an "8"? I looked at it three ways, with progressive levels of magnification, and the suffix still looks more like a "B".
The "Mayflower-Dell" titles I looked at before creating this entry show as "Mayflower" ... presumably an arrangement with USA publisher Dell (or parent Delacorte), as the latter has a "Mayflower" imprint.
annaloog 13th Oct 2022 | | BookC. M. Kornbluth - Thirteen O'Clock And Other Zero Hours (1970) | By that idea, all collections / anthologies should be by the stories' authors, with the editor relegated to Notes. This collection happens to have been selected from stories by only one author, rather than several. If 45worlds could allow both author and editor to coexist, I would prefer equal billing for this title; alas, it is either one or the other.
