albert 14th Oct 2017 | | CD AlbumRadiohead - Amnesiac (2001) | Also available in the UK was a special 'book' edition, though I doubt many people care about that.

albert 17th Sep 2017 | | CD AlbumThe Strangeloves - I Want Candy (1995) | Don't get too excited at the prospect of hearing "I Want Candy" (the song) in stereo, yes it is stereo and its a longer version, but it completely loses its punch and the extra bits of twiddle
just end up wrong-footing you.
A bunch of the songs on this LP were made primarily to show off production skills, so I've read, and there are also songs that just rehash an earlier hit. Its an OK compilation, though somewhat repetitive, and it doesn't have I Want Candy (in mono), so minus marks there.
For a better compilation of the Feldman Goldstein Gotteher sound, try "Smash Boom Bang", which includes I Want Candy (in mono), and a whole bunch of tracks by other bands *cough*.

albert 17th Sep 2017 | | CD AlbumThe Strangeloves - I Want Candy (1995) | I bought a version of this CD about 10 years ago from Amazon.com and got sent a CDr with a crummy scanned cover !
Hard to believe but it was actually a legit pressing, the whole thing was licenced for a 'CD on demand' style operation to 'make rare recordings available once more', (something like that). Amazon did not indicate that they would be sending a CDr, and it was full price too,
So if you are reading this text then just make a mental note so that you can ask the seller if the CD is a genuine original factory made one or if it is a CDr.

albert 9th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - A Rocket In My Pocket (2010) | Pity that hipster is now something of a negative term worthy of derision when this looks like it has a great selection of some rare rockabilly (which I don't suppose many hipsters would like).

albert 31st Jul 2017 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Phil's Spectre III – A Third Wall Of Soundalikes (2007) | @leonard
The modern English language is a mixture of many other country's languages, which is why we have strange spellings and so many words that mean the same thing - which is very fortunate for lyricists, humourists, writers etc. The older languages of the British Isles are of Celtic origin including Welsh and Gaelic tongues, and probably bemuse/confuse tourists who visit the UK.

albert 26th Jul 2017 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Rave On – The Coral Story (2012) | These double CDs for labels/genres (expired copyrights) are becoming increasingly harder to find and if you look on the official 'One Day Music/Not Now' website you will see that they are not in the current catalogue so are probably deleted.
I admit that I was thrilled by these 2CD or 3CD of original recordings (some very rare) at bargain prices and presented in mostly great quality (which was unusual), but the copyright thing is troubling. The success of these compilations shows that there is a market and One Day showed how it should be done, ie quantity and quality (since there is a mountain of songs on back catalogue and many are completely forgotten). Whereas prior to this watershed we were continually being sold the same old stuff 'officially' (like a playlist on commercial radio).
I know that the argument about artists not getting any royalties is often put forward, but countless times I have read that the original artists never earned a penny from their recordings even when they were first released. Anyway its for the lawyers to argue, not us buying public.
THANK YOU to the contributors adding the track listings, that's a lot of typing!

albert 23rd Jul 2017 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Punk 45 (2015) | and also The Electric Eels (UK) which made appearances on some of the 101 compilation LPs. There are probably more.
Of course here EE should probably be listed as Die Electric Eels as they are often named that way.
...Looks like a good compilation LP, showing that punk didn't just begin at CBGBs, a lot of these Cleveland bands shared members.

albert 8th Jul 2017 | | CD AlbumDubstar - Disgraceful (1995) | the fluffy bunny slipper thing on the cover is the replacement sleeve, the original sleeve was a lot more suggestive (an opened furry purse).

albert 14th May 2017 | | CD AlbumThe Beatles - Please Please Me (1987) | Added a clipping of the news item from Melody Maker 28 Feb 1987 regarding the press event for the release of the first 4 CDs (reads like it was a very sober do). Note that 2 new manufacturing facilities needed to be built to meet the demand for Beatles CDs.

oh dear, I am finding most are blocked, so here they are on Jools Holland's show instead

albert 12th May 2017 | | CD AlbumStereolab - The Groop Played "Space Age Batchelor Pad Music" (1993) | Emperor Tomato Ketchup is probably the easiest of their LPs to start on and was produced about the mid-point of their career (they borrowed the title from a wacko Japanese movie). There have been many compilation LPs of their extremely limited vinyl singles, and these would give anyone a good idea of the scope of their sound - which started like an indie-krautrock and finished somewhere near jazzy-easy-listening.
Unfortunately tracking down the CDs/LPs is getting difficult as they seem to have been deleted.
Laetitia Sadier is back in France and has about 5 LPs which sound like Les Swingle Singers, from what I've heard. Tim Gane is in a band called Cavern Of Anti-Matter, which sound not too dis-similar to the early Stereolab.

albert 21st Oct 2016 | | CD AlbumThe Beatles - Red Box (Export Box Set For Japan) | Here are some pictures of the export box set minus the CDs, which were the same ones as first released in the UK (and Europe I guess). The 208 page book is one of those fact-filled reference books, written by ultra-researcher-fan Mark Lewisohn so you should know what to expect, including observations and comments, photos, press cutting and tickets, facts and lists. The book also includes a very early interview on a flexi-disc. The additional 4 photos are on proper photographic paper.
While HMV sold their own packaged Beatles box sets the Virgin Megastore and a few other shops had these official EMI export items. And Virgin sold them cheaper than buying the 4 CDs individually - what a bargain!

The 176 page book is one of those fact-filled reference books, quite nice too, including photos, interviews, 'who wrote what' by John Lennon, discography of cover versions, musical chronology, articles and comments by George Martin, Richard Lester and leading critics.

albert 21st Oct 2016 | | CD AlbumThe Beatles - The Final Years (Export Box Set For Japan) | Here are some pictures of the export box set minus the CDs, which were the same ones as first released in the UK (and Europe I guess). The heavyweight book is a 224 page memoir by Geoffrey Giuliano with a run through of the Beatles story, his observations, his comments and some interviews, it has photos and pictures of memorabilia too.

albert 21st Oct 2016 | | CD AlbumThe Beatles - It Was Twenty Years Ago Today..... (Export Box Set For Japan) | Here are some pictures of the export box set minus the CDs, which were the same ones as first released in the UK (and Europe I guess). The book is a 287 page memoir around the summer of love by Derek Taylor and is quite entertaining, containing quotes, observations, some photos and general snippets of info, this book is about the whole global scene not just The Beatles. The art print studio has a "G" logo, possibly Genesis since they had published limited Beatles books, the art print is signed and dated 1987 indicating that the box set had been planned before the official release of the first Beatles CDs.

albert 21st Oct 2016 | | CD AlbumThe Beatles - Past Masters (Export Box Set For Japan) | Here are some pictures of the export box set minus the CDs, which were the same ones as first released in the UK (and Europe I guess). The wonderful 128 page photo book contains many of the most iconic Beatle images.

albert 21st Oct 2016 | | CD AlbumThe Beatles - Past Masters Volume 2 (1988) | When The Beatles CDs came out I wanted the whole set, however there was no way I was going to buy these HMV items (see my comment on later complete box). I was nearly tempted by the EMI black roll-top case which had all of the CDs but it was a bit too costly. Instead I found that Virgin had a big pile of EMI 'export for Japan' box sets and not only did the CDs work out cheaper than buying them individually we also got nice goodies like proper books. The boxes were also much more classy and much stronger, all in all a much better buy. (see here).

albert 20th Oct 2016 | | CD AlbumThe Beatles - Complete Compact Disc Collection (1988) | This is a nice item but I would like to hear people’s opinions on these HMV box sets as I find them somewhat troubling, and the same goes for all of the HMV packages of Beatles stuff.
HMV was originally the retail shop linked to the Gramophone Company (later EMI group) to sell the records they produced, so all well and good. But when companies get really big they tend to be subdivided to protect the group as a whole, so if one division suffers from a failure then it doesn't bring down the whole group, however these subdivisions also start working independently of each other.
So anyway, prior to the Beatles items, in the late 1980s, HMV produced a 'classic collection' series of box sets including items such as Velvet Underground & Nico, The Doors L.A. Woman, Led Zeppelin 4, Fleetwood Mac Rumours, Elvis Presley Sun Collection and one which I bought, Jimi Hendrix Experience Are You Experienced. It was a standard box with a small picture of the album cover stuck on the front and inside was the LP itself plus a booklet and a standard certificate announcing its 'limited edition'. But afterwards it dawned on me that I'd been conned, the LP was on Polydor (not part of EMI) so in fact this was just a re-package of a regular LP with added premium price, what I paid extra for was essentially just the booklet and a sticker, (ignoring the standard box & standard piece of paper).
So my question is what do we really know about these Beatles HMV boxes? were they sanctioned by the Beatles? what is the story? I’d like to know.

albert 20th Aug 2016 | | CD AlbumJilted John - Jilted Jam (2016) | I had the original Jilted John LP for a while, it was a bit of a let-down after the single but the lyrics were still funny. However this new CD looks more promising, I visited the website and here is a quote from there:
Fellows remains ambivalent about the LP: “To be honest, I was disappointed with it - particularly that re—cut of ‘Jilted John’. It all sounds so over- arranged and overproduced. Not Punk at all. By the time we did the album, Martin's musical taste had changed...he’d decided he didn’t like John Scott's guitar after all, so he kept John's contribution to a minimum. Instead he went for a far more commercial feel, using all the keyboards...Steve Hopkins played those. Consequently, the album ended up sounding very much softer than the songs had sounded at the rehearsals.”
So if this CD has the rehearsals then it may be worth investigating.
