The cat# and barcode on this release are wrong and should be 72435 9663227 and 724359663227 respectively. This may well be why there are duplicate releases on the site. Correction sent.

Carly Simon - Original Album Series (2011)
The main problem @Helbic is that no products are identified as international and this why inventing the category in the first place was a mistake. Like you I am also just someone that loves music and really don't care where it comes from and believe that making things like this international actually strips them of there real identity. Unfortunately though the guidelines for entering CDs on this site would classify this as international. I know you can't know that when entering a CD but that is only part of the problem. The other part is no-one really checks each CD for this when they go in so the MODS are not really working to the guidelines either. And why should they? They are kind enough to volunteer their time for free and actually finding out if a CD is in fact international is a very time consuming and difficult task.
So we're left with this system of "bang 'em in and they'll sort themselves out" but that also hasn't turned out to be ideal. For instance I'm wasting my time writing this stupid explanation when I could be looking at interesting things on the site instead of defending the guidelines I vociferously protested about many years ago. The main thing though HelBic is not to take it personally and carry on in any manner you see fit. Everyone else does, I just sometimes like to point when the guidelines aren't being followed to show how ridiculous they really are. My personal preference would be that this series be listed as from the EU but what I think counts for nought. Have a nice day and carry on regardless.

Blood, Sweat And Tears - Original Album Classics (2009)
International again HelBic and no I'm not from interpol but this just goes to show how hard it is to correctly enter a CD. How are you meant to know where it was released other than where you bought it. It's even harder in cases like this where the same (identical) release gets global distribution through Warner or Sony. See here for an example from years ago. Now, if truth be known I'd rather this series be listed as EU as you have done here and I have done here but according to the guidelines this series is international but that destroys the identity of the product and will certainly lead to duplicate entries. What to do I don't know perhaps the MODS should decide which way is up with this series because I sure has hell don't know.

By the way Blood Sweat And Tears should have a comma Blood, Sweat And Tears when I looked this up I couldn't believe we only had one listing for the band.

Carly Simon - Original Album Series (2011)
All of these "Original Album Series" are international. All of them are available in Australia and most likely everywhere else in this EU manufactured form. The Sony (Columbia, CBS), RCA, Rhino, Atlantic, Atco, Elektra and anything else owned by Warner are all international. It has been the norm on the site for at least four years to list these releases as international. However, I don't think that's a good fit cataloging and site management wise as I see that product will lose its identity and be prone to duplicate entries.

Hi Phil, The story of Mother Records is also rather intriguing. It is really an Irish independent label originally distributed through Island Records. Herein lies part of the problem with Island being subject to many takeovers and even buy backs the marketing and distribution of Island itself was often split between the UK and EU, the USA and the rest of the world. Which causes problems here to a degree in that the parent label is Polydor (even if not a real label at the time) due to the way Island was handled by Phonogram and later Universal. So the fact that the label logo appears on both the spine and CD of this Australian release indicates to me that it was necessary to add it for distribution in Australia for some reason.

Also, with regard to the Mother label itself I don't see any difference between this label, and say Rough Trade, Domino, and Ace all UK independents except in the case of Mother the label is Irish. So, another question is are all releases on the Mother label really Irish? In the case of this CD according to our guidelines and protocols it could be correctly listed as Irish, Australian or international. Shall I just list it as all three?! I'm joking but it is certainly a difficult one to place. Seems only you and I care as I have asked for advice several times on this entry and the corresponding EU version and have not had any replies other than yours.

Atom splitting time! Is this Australian release on Mother / Polydor the same as this EU version on Mother / One Little Indian with the same cat# and barcode? Or are the differences in secondary labels enough to keep them as separate releases. The Australian issue was certainly specifically intended for the Australian market only and the Mother label does use different parent labels to make and distribute product throughout the world. So does being made and marketed by PolyGram on the Polydor label make this a different release in spite of the other similarities? A tricky one.

Why is this an EU release?? The very same CD was released in three countries (that I know of) outside the EU. Or don't we bother with pesky details like that anymore?

Alice Cooper - A Paranormal Evening With Alice Cooper At The Olympia Paris (2018)
The Australian release of this has the same cat# and barcode. That makes this an international release according to our reckoning. The US release (same cat#, different barcode) would also most likely have made it over the border to Canada.

America - Original Album Series (2011)
Only released the EU? I'd doubt it but it is no-one's job to check whether EU releases were released anywhere else as well as the EU. I'm fairly certain this would have been released in Australia in this exact form along with the rest of the Original Album Series. I own quite a number of them myself and have listed mine as international. Unfortunately, if you are in the EU it is impossible to know that this series had global distribution and consequently we will continually have EU duplicates of what are international releases by our reckoning. See this release for an explanation of how this was done. It is a bit of a problem though.

John Lee Hooker - Boogie Man (1993)
Linked to UK release with slightly different cat#. So now there's a German, UK and International version of this first entry in the series. There should be an entire series worth of German releases but I'm not sure how long the UK specific releases were made that omitted "N" from the cat#. There is apparently versions of the series that are specific to the Netherlands and Italy also, as well as whole series with different covers and cat#s on Editions Atlas. CDs don't you just love 'em.

Can someone explain why Grönland is not considered an independent label along the lines of Ace, Charly, Domino, New Rose, Rough Trade and many others with a similar pedigree. If it were considered an independent label (which it is) the listings should all be UK releases from 1999 to 2009 and German from then on. What do people think?

Linked to the three other copies on the site and listed label as Gronland / EMI Electrola. It's a bit of a mystery when these actually came out because I'm fairly sure that they didn't release two versions of the same CD in 2001. My suspicion is that one or more will be 2008 releases that coincide with the USA (Fontana - High Wire) reissues which I will upload one of shortly.

My CD of this is release is made in England or UK I can't remember which but definitely not France. I'll redo the cover and other shots when I upload it soon. Camshaft's original shots are good but specs for pics have improved since this was originally uploaded. Bugger it, I'll do it do it now.

Thought I had this but I have USA 2008 release made in the EU with a different barcode but same cat#.Turns out all of my copies of the three Neu! CDs are different I'll upload them soon. I have two on Grönland / EMI Electrola. I don't know what that's about but corporate mergers/ takeovers will probably be the culprit as usual.

Joe Jackson - Night And Day II (2000)
I'm still not convinced it deserves a separate entry. It could be added to the "official" promo CDs" that "were later pressings (September 2000?)" as the in-house promo CD-R 15/8/2000. It should have the same status as a test pressing or acetate. The reason being that it was never intended for release in this form at all.

Just what is this meant to be? There seems to have been a surge in home recordings appearing on the site. I saw two posted yesterday. Even if this is as it says it the notes an "In-house promo CD-R, plain sleeve" it is still a home recording and has no place on the site. Are the MODS dealing with the serial offenders in this line of garbage? Did this get approved by a MOD?

Bangles - Greatest Hits (1990)
CBS label code is LC 0149 and Columbia is LC 0162 as seen on the discs presented. So yes they are different labels. Confusion was caused in 1988 when Sony bought the CBS Records label and renamed it Columbia Records. Prior to this Columbia was a UK (international) label owned by EMI. A quantum problem - technically the CDs are same and different at the same time. However, there are definitely different labels on the same product on this entry. Separate entries are required for each label.

That's my understanding of the situation. It might be best to PM leonard who is a MOD from the Netherlands for clarification. I ran in to a similar problem when I thought Disky releases that were widely available in Australia should be considered international but apparently they are not due to the "independent" or "boutique" status of the label on this site. It may well be different in this particular case but I'm not a MOD and I'm just passing on my experience with entering CDs on this label.

My Australian copy with the same barcode and cat# is released on Mother/Polydor and has the Polydor logo and Mother logo on the CD, spine and inlay. The same or different??? Should I create a new entry or add images here?? See here for images of what I'm talking about. Any advice welcome.

Hi Jo,
The Disky label is treated as a boutique independent label on 45 Worlds. So this one should be listed as from the Netherlands as that is the home address of the label. Other independent labels such as Domino, Rough Trade and Cherry Red are treated the same way. However, I see a growing number appearing on the site being listed as from the EU and these should be changed I think. Leonard will know best on the protocols with this label.

You are right though that a lot of Disky releases were released worldwide and that makes entering them a little difficult unless you know the site views these releases independent Netherlands issues. Disky also manufactured and distributed CDs in Canada and Australia but these releases are deemed as from those countries as they are market specific. The first two Disky CDs on the EU list by T. Rex also appear to be a bit unusual in that they are made in France or Benelux and don't have the Disky logo but have opted for the old Cube label logo associated with the original T. Rex albums. I think Leonard may need to look into what's happening with listings for this label if he has time.

Lou Reed - Transformer (1998)
As far as I know this CD was only released in Australia and the EU with neither version being sold in both markets. Hardly international is it? It reminds of this Buzzcocks CD that I listed initially entered as international thinking I was getting the hang of it and using this as evidence but the MODS changed it to an Australian release. Does the same logic not apply in this case? Obviously not but the question is why do we have two systems of entry for CDs that are the complete opposite of each other? This is a no win situation for those trying enter CDs and I have plenty of examples in my collection where similar inconsistencies are apparent.

Sometimes you lose and other times you lose after you change tack and think your doing the right thing. It's very frustrating and has sent many a CD catter packing after encountering the international conundrum.

The Knack - Get The Knack (2002)
Quad5point1 the link you provided only lists two versions of this label, cat# and barcode combination. My feeling is that separate EU and USA entries would be a better fit than one international listing. The reason I think that's a better option is that there are only two releases and if we construct an imaginary international entry duplicate entries will surface endlessly as either EU or USA releases are entered after we create an international page.

Feelings on the site about what's best to do here are divided so no-one really knows and most people just do what they like. My feeling is that these two CDs were made for two distinct markets the USA and the EU so neither was intended to be an international release per se. One of them would have turned up in Australia (almost certainly) but I'll pretend I didn't say that. Overall, though some "intended market" thinking needs to be incorporated into CD albums world because matching cat#s, labels and barcodes pop up in the strangest places. Mexico and Australia for instance have many matches but I have never bought a Mexican made CD in Australia. Here is an example from my collection where I'm weighing up the same question you are here Quad5point1. The only thing you can be certain of is that you'll simultaneously be right and wrong. It's not ideal so good luck and remember whatever you do you'll at least be half right.
