ppint. 24th Mar 2015		CD Album The Housemartins - The Best Of The Housemartins (2004)	9818213 (602498182130) adds a disc2 of videos: 1 sheep; 2; happy hour; 3 think for a minute; 4 caravan of love; 5 five get over-printed excited; 6 me and the farmer; 7 build; 8 there is always something there to remind me.
ppint. 23rd Mar 2015		CD Album Jack Bruce - Shadows In The Air (2001)	the title of track 13, "He. The Richmond", without the period, but with double (or at least an emsworth) space after the "He", does not begin with the male singular pronoun - it is the scots english exclamation word, often used to signify a celebratory ejaculation or interjection, usually with an exclamation mark or "shriek", "!" there is no such punctuation in the album's track listing, but the word isn't a tyop, literal or simple mistake. (my apologies to those cdcatters already aware of the phenomenon.)

ppint. 17th Mar 2015		CD Album Cream - Wheels Of Fire (1998)	the two discs are individually polydor cat#ed 531 813-2 & 531 814-2 respectiwiggly (though not sfaiaa released separately, as the lps were as well as, as the double lp), which explains the gap in the polydor cat#ering between the remastered "wheels of fire" and the remastered "goodbye".

ppint. 16th Mar 2015		CD Album The Kinks - Arthur Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire (1998)	Review "arthur, or the decline and fall of the british empire" was one of the two best albums the kinks produced for pye records, originally released with a quirky, and very funny - but somewhat shoddily-manufactured - centre-loading, ah, three-quarter gatefold sleeve (the front half was single-thickness card, flimsy, and easily creased, and torn); but, apart from that, pye records didn't seem bothered by it, any more than they had by "the kinks are the village green preservation society". it seems that the kinks had been pigeon-holed by pye as a hit singles group, and that was all pye records wanted of them - or, perhaps, could handle. in "arthur", ray davies continues and expands the scope and depth of his song-writing depiction of a "great britain" slowly recovering from having bankrupted itself resisting the evils of nazi german and fascist italy, and - to a lesser extent, maybe - the militarist near-junta controlling japan, being in the process of losing its empire and, for the people of the uk-of-gb'n'ni°, for what? the semi-mythical land of australia is seen as both an el dorado, a land of unending sunshine and opportunity inhabited by warm-hearted, white english colonists(!), with fruit like pineapples, and bananas(!) just waiting for english immigrants to come and take advantage - and do a bit of work, naturally; but mostly, just relax on the beaches...° - but also, impossibly far off, a distant and effectively separate planet, to which one might maybe lose one's family - relatives, children, grandchildren - forever. meanwhile, "export - or die!" was the word, and, once the tories'd overthrown the atlee labour government for providing one of the longest and hardest winters this century, as well as committing the obscenity of setting up our national health service, and failing to lift the wartime rationing system fast enough, to allow tory-owned car - and sweets! - manufacturers to sell most easily & profitably to brits, rather than concentrate on much harder work of export sales in competition with merkin firms, to earn £,£££,£££,£££,£££ to pay off our debts to merkia°°, where was this wonderful new world we'd fought and sacrificed - and many of us, been wounded, crippled or killed - for? - a new hat or a new raincoat, a new hair-do or a motorcycle combination, and nights out at the dances would have to do. - and, for a while, it did. - ray davies' memories of the times - and of his close relatives' - are conjured up again by the two albums, wonderfully well. . ° - rude awakenings from these siren scenes in the imaginations and too many immigrant brits' reactions giving rise, at a guess, to the phenomenon of the "whinging pom" caricature °° - not finally cleared until during tony blair's first premiership! 1 person found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review?
ppint. 16th Mar 2015		CD Album Kinks - Face To Face (1998)	at the time, ray davies' composer credit was always "r. d. davies" - never "ray davies"; this may have been a mere matter of formality, a requirement of copyright law - or almost anything else, as he was certainly known as "ray" to some staff and browsers in muswell hill's best record (& music) shop. the most recent style seems to be to give his full name; so the above form is something of a compromise. edit: this has been changed, anonymously, giving rise to needless ambiguity, there being *two* kinky komposer gentlemen hight "davies" in the group.
ppint. 14th Mar 2015		CD Album The Doors - The Doors (1988)	my - and doubtless some others' - "the doors remastered" copy of the doors first album was mfd in germany, bears the longer cat# 7559-74007-2 and bar-code 075597400724; remastered from the original 2 track masters to 96hhz 24 bit digital by bruce botnick and bernie grundman at bernie grundman mastering, hollywood... 8/89. it includes as an extra f. insert, a flyer for all of the doors remastered cds, one of which (the best of the doors 2cd) bears the warning footneat, "* may be subject to local restrictions "

ppint. 11th Mar 2015		CD Album The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground (1996)	may be a eurodisc, rather than a merkin release - f. insert bears merkin data, b. insert asserts country of manufacture as stated on label - none is explicit, but a&m records, inc. implies merkin manufacture - whilst reverse of disc explicitly states it was made in germany. i s'pose it could be a world - welt ? - disc...
ppint. 11th Mar 2015		CD Album The Who - A Quick One (1995)	tracks 01-10 = the original 12/1966 album, reaction lp 593002 (mono), 594002 (stereo) ; tracks 11-20 = bonus tracks including 11-14: four of the the five-track 11/1966 reaction ep 592001, "ready steady who"; single b-sides; alternate takes; recording session outtakes. all tracks produced by kit lambert; original lp, singles & ep released on the robert stigwood organisation's reaction label, as kit lambert's & chris stamp's track records was not yet up and running, and the who had not completely escaped from their first contract with shel talmy, who'd obtained their signing to merkin decca (see the tale told by the who's singles through this period, on 45cat.com). the merkin decca & the canadadian decca versions of the album were retitled "happy jack" both to tie in with the single, and because the merkin manglement objected to the double entendre of the original title; on them, the track "heatwave" was dropped, replaced by "happy jack" appended to side one. remixed and remastered for cd by andy macpherson & jon astley at revolution studios
ppint. 11th Mar 2015		CD Album The Who - Sell Out (1995)	tracks 14-23 also produced by kit lambert, respectively at talent masters studios ny, de lane lea studios london, advision studios london, (unspecified) ny, brass at bradley's barn, nashville, inc studios, london, cbs studios london, kingsway studios london, sound techniques studio london, talent masters studios ny, de lane lea studios london: all for his & chris stamp's track records, during 1967 (may through november, save a few tracks whose month of recording is not now certain) sessions for the lp. n.b. the guitar tracks for the mono and stereo lps are different, as was quite commonly the case for the period before "stereo playable mono" and the phasing out of mono (where stereo recordings existed, or could be recovered from original master tapes) - and sometimes for all instruments, and even vocals.

ppint. 11th Mar 2015		CD Album Jefferson Airplane - Jefferson Airplane (1989)	mods: copy whole page as new item, cbs records inc epic label catalogue# ek 45271 / 465659 2, bar-code 5099746565923 also dated (c) 1989 cbs records inc/epic; distribution cbs records. back of booklet below photo reads: "(epic logo) 01-465659-10 ddd" - that # is possibly to identify the correct booklet to go with export copies. all else is sfaik identical, modulo the three corrections entered a few minutes ago. i _think_ this version i have may've been for the uk alone, but i'm not sure. (if i could save whole page, make the minor mods, and save the new page as a new, appropriately re-cdcat #ed item, i would - but i can't sfaik.)(this is not a complaint, just explaining why i haven't done it.)

ppint. 25th Feb 2015		CD Album Hedgehog Pie - Hedgehog Pie	Review wonderful music, and it found (what i presume to've been) official, legitimate release on cd - eventually. - i hope the band saw some income from this - does any 45/33/78/cd/tape-catter know for sure? - and hedgehog pie's rendition of the march of the king of laois is the equal of the march of the montagues and the capulets for swagger and parading peackockery - with armed ominousity. . . notes: section rewritten anonymously by someone introducing some hiccups, errors, and infelicities. the assignation of composer credits should read "traditional, arranged hedgehog pie" for tracks 4 & 9 at least; i must find my copy of the original lp to check whether they gave the full and proper attribs. whilst they - and rubber records - were a going concern. 1 person found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review?
ppint. 23rd Feb 2015		CD Album Amy Winehouse - Lioness: Hidden Treasures (2011)	label(s) appear to be island lioness, island records group, and universal island records, a division of universal music operations ltd. however, the copyright in this sound recording is owned by universal-island records ltd. is it just me, or is this all getting absurdly surreal?
ppint. 23rd Feb 2015		CD Album Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert (1984)	Review this is superb. keith jarrett discovered upon his arrival that the piano provided by the köln opera house management was not the bösendorfer concert grand he'd asked for, and concert promoter vera brandes had specified, but an old (bösendorfer) baby grand in poor condition found backstage, and used only for rehearsals, which needed hours of tuning, with treble and bass sounds *far* inferior to the concert grand jarrett had specificied - and on top of this, neither the sustain nor the "soft" pedals worked properly... jarrett decided to go ahead with the concert nevertheless, at least in part because ecm records engineer, martin wieland, had fully set up the recording equipment, and what was caught on the tapes was an hour-long tour-de-force demonstration of extemporisation exploring the piano's limitations, determining how to compensate and then exploit them, to advantage - all the while giving a brilliant series of improvised variations upon the themes - sometimes simply on one chord - that he chose. followed after the deserved applause from the delighted audience by a seven minute encore... brilliant. simply brilliant. 2 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review?
