LaurenceD SUBS 1st Sep 2024 | | Classical ItemCzecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Ondrej Lenárd - Peter And The Wolf · Carnival Of The Animals · Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra (1991) | This release contains the same recordings as an earlier one from 1990 (Naxos 8.550335), but now with the addition of Jeremy Nicholas' narration for Peter and the Wolf.

LaurenceD SUBS 23rd Aug 2024 | | Classical ItemCantilena, Adrian Shepherd - Carl Friedrich Abel: Six Symphonies Opus 7 (1988) | The Symphony no. 6 in E flat was originally attributed to Mozart as his symphony no. 3 (K. 18) and listed as such in Breitkopf & Härtel's first edition of Mozart's works. It was later determined that the manuscript in Mozart's collection was in fact copied from Abel's score, with some changes to the instrumentation.

LaurenceD SUBS 3rd Jul 2024 | | Classical ItemHenryk Szeryng, LSO, Alexander Gibson - Paganini: Violin Concertos Nos. 1 & 4 (1976) | I have designated this as a UK issue; seems to contain the same disc as the German one, but the cover has text in English instead of German.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Jun 2024 | | Classical ItemWiener Staatsoper, Nicola Rescigno - Verdi: Otello (1994) | This recording has been released on some other budget labels; those other releases credit the Dallas Opera (at that time called Dallas Civic Opera). That may be the correct attribution, as Nicola Rescigno was a co-founder of the Dallas Opera.
Makes me wonder if this is one of those semi-legit Italian labels...

LaurenceD SUBS 9th May 2024 | | Classical ItemThe Paris Philharmonic Orchestra, René Leibowitz - Eric Satie: Socrate | My copy has the cover with the old cat# (ES-510) but with a stereo sticker.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 7th May 2024 | | Classical ItemLeonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio - Selections From "The Female Prisoner" (La Prisonnière) (1969) | These appear to be previously issued recordings.
I don't know if these are the same recordings of the Webern and Mahler works that were used in the film.

LaurenceD SUBS 30th Jan 2024 | | Classical ItemVarious Artists - Havergal Brian: Symphony No. 4 | I don't have a release date for this, but would estimate it to be from 1976-1980.
Credited to "Sir Allistair MacKenzie, Edinburgh Youth Symphony and Chorus, Valerie MacLennan"
This Aries label (Reseda CA) has a history of issuing unauthorized releases of classical recordings and concealing the identities of the actual performers with made-up pseudonyms. The website havergalbrian.org lists these releases under their Discography of unapproved recordings, and provides the following information about the source recording:
Performance date: 13 October 1974
BBC air date: 25 June 1975
Performers:
- Felicity Palmer (soprano)
- BBC Singers, BBC Choral Society, Goldsmith’s Choral Union
- London Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor John Poole
I have entered the performers as shown on the album, along with the real performers for referencing.
High Fidelity Aug 1981 mentions this Aries label releasing Brian's recordings "a few years ago". They even contacted Aries and got a response: High Fidelity Aug 1981 - see article p.47 "Will the Real Colin Wilson Please Stand Up?" by John Canarina
This article (and the response from Aries) prompted many letters in the Nov & Dec 1981 issues, including one letter from Emil Franzi (Dec 1981) who really did contribute the liner notes, and was unaware of the pseudonyms.

LaurenceD SUBS 27th Oct 2023 | | Classical ItemBerliner Philharmoniker, Herbert Von Karajan - Mozart: Grosse Messe C-moll (1983) | My copy might be a later edition of this release. Some other copies list the English translation of the work (on the disc) as "Great Mess in c-minor", which I suppose was subsequently corrected ;-)
|
LaurenceD SUBS 15th Oct 2023 | | Classical ItemErnst Hinreiner - W.A. Mozart: Messe En Ut Majeur, Davidde Penitente (1986) | From the notes:
In accordance with the tradition of the time, we have inserted the Sonate all'epistole KV 336 between the Gloria and Credo that was composed for this mass; it replaced the song of the gradual.

LaurenceD SUBS 13th Sep 2023 | | Classical ItemNew York Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein - Grofé: Grand Canyon Suite (1964) | The featured violin soloist is John Corigliano Sr., concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic from 1943 to 1966, and father of composer John Corigliano Jr..
|
LaurenceD SUBS 28th Aug 2023 | | Classical ItemItzhak Perlman, Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Bernard Haitink - Mendelssohn & Bruch: Violin Concertos (1984) | Fixed that; a rather glaring copy/paste error on my part ;-)
|
LaurenceD SUBS 28th Aug 2023 | | Classical ItemItzhak Perlman, Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Bernard Haitink - Mendelssohn & Bruch: Violin Concertos (1984) | Hi, I have a couple of early CDs that make use of sub-track indices. On the EMI discs such as this one, the tracks are designated by a number in a square (note the timings to the far right). The indices are designated by (IN:DEX) #, followed by timings indented to the left of the track timings. Most modern audio compact disc players do not display an index counter, and usage of the index feature was largely abandoned by the 1990s.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 24th Aug 2023 | | Classical ItemItzhak Perlman, Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Bernard Haitink - Mendelssohn & Bruch: Violin Concertos (1984) | I have posted images from what I believe is an early edition of this CD, in which the booklet & inlay list 3 tracks, divided with index marks. However the disc itself plays 6 separate tracks.

LaurenceD SUBS 4th Aug 2023 | | Classical ItemRadu Lupu, Uri Segal, English Chamber Orchestra - Mozart: Piano Concertos No. 21 And No. 12 (1975) | My scans are from a Book-of-the-Month club pressing: BOMC 30-5727
|
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Jul 2023 | | Classical ItemMonteverdi Choir, Orchestre Révolutionaire Et Romantique, John Eliot Gardiner - Berlioz: Messe Solennelle (1994) | The score of the 1824 Messe solennelle was unpublished (except for a revised version of the Resurrexit) and considered lost until Frans Moors discovered the manuscript at the church of St Charles Borromeus in Antwerp in 1991.

LaurenceD SUBS 27th Jun 2023 | | Classical ItemEnglish Chamber Orchestra, Philip Ledger - J. S. Bach (1987) | It appears to be the Château de Marly.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Jun 2023 | | Classical ItemAmadeus Quartet, Robert Cohen - Schubert: Streichquintett (1987) | According to Stereo Review (Dec 1987), this was the last recording by the Amadeus Quartet. Violist Peter Schidlof died on Aug 16, 1987. The surviving members announced that they would not attempt to replace him, and the quartet disbanded.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 23rd May 2023 | | Classical ItemThe Netherlands Wind Ensemble, Edo De Waart - Mozart: Divertimenti (1970) | This LP was released with two different covers, one with notes in English (my copy), and one with notes in German (as seen here).
K.A.226 & 227 have been regarded as being of doubtful origin, as the original manuscripts are lost. I believe that most scholars regard them as most likely composed by Mozart, however. Alfred Einstein suggests that Mozart may have composed these while in Munich, around the time of La Finta giardiniera (K.196, ca. 1775).
|
LaurenceD SUBS 21st May 2023 | | Classical ItemAcademy Of St. Martin-In-The-Fields, Neville Marriner - Gluck: Don Juan (1972) | From the liner notes: "29. An exact repeat of no. 26, put in presumably for the scene change rather than for any dramatic reason. It has been omitted from the recording."
|
LaurenceD SUBS 18th May 2023 | | Classical ItemLondon Symphony Orchestra, Richard Bonynge - Auber: Marco Spada (1975) | From the HiFi review by Dale S. Harris:
"One puzzling detail about this issue: The jacket shows, without any identification, Lucille Grahn and Jules Perrot in a scene from the latter's ballet Catarina, produced in London in 1846, with music by Cesare Pugni. To my knowledge, the only thing it has in common with Marco Spada is that both ballets feature a bandit."
|
LaurenceD SUBS 28th Feb 2023 | | Classical ItemVarious Artists - Searle: Symphony No. 1 / Seiber: Elegy For Viola, Three Fragments (1960) | Matyas Seiber was killed in an auto accident in September 1960, around the time this record was released.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Feb 2023 | | Classical ItemYo-Yo Ma, Kenneth Cooper - Bach: Sonatas For Viola Da Gamba & Harpsichord (1983) | From Stereo Review (11/83) by Stoddard Lincoln:
While it is possible to achieve a balanced sound in Bach's sonatas for violin and harpsichord and for flute and harpsichord using modern instruments, it is impossible to do so in the gamba sonatas using a modern cello. All you hear is the lush string sound with a frustrating tinkle in the background. If cellists insist on playing these works, let them use a piano for accompaniment so we poor listeners can at least hear both parts!
Having said that, Stoddard did praise the performances by Ma and Cooper.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 14th Jan 2023 | | Classical ItemTrevor Pinnock - Scarlatti: Sonatas For Harpsichord (1995) | This collection was previously released on a CRD compact disc (ca. 1987) with the same cat number, but different artwork and no barcode.
See here for images of that earlier version.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Dec 2022 | | Classical ItemE. Power Biggs - Bach Organ Favorites Vol. 2 (1965) | From the notes: "This recording follows in outline an organ concert that Felix Mendelssohn played in August 1840, at St. Thomas' Church in Leipzig, where Johann Sebastian Bach had been Music Director until 1750 ...
Mendelssohn's program at St. Thomas' Church and that warm summer day of 1840 live for us still in the luminous writings of Robert Schumann, who was present for the occasion in the role of journalist ..."
(Due to time considerations for the LP, the Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor from Mendelssohn's program is not included in this release, but is available on the previous "Bach Organ Favorites" album)

LaurenceD SUBS 13th Nov 2022 | | Classical ItemSarah Chang, Philadelphia Orchestra, Wolfgang Sawallisch - Paganini: Violin Concerto No. 1 · Saint-Saens: Havanaise, Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso (1994) | Added scans from Columbia House edition
|
LaurenceD SUBS 19th Oct 2022 | | Classical ItemThe Frankenland State Symphony Orchestra, Erich Kloss - Dittersdorf: Symphony In A Minor | Looks like these recordings were first released in 1952 (Lyrichord LL 26) and reviewed that year.
This album contains rechanneled stereo versions.
I am unable to determine the release date for this one, but it may be from around 1973.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Sep 2022 | | Classical ItemChancel Choir Of The Congregational Church Of San Mateo - Missa Brevis (1962) | The included program insert is for a performance on May 20, 1962. It is not stated whether this recording is from that performance, but it seems likely, so I have dated the LP based on that assumption.
Here is the entire program as listed in the insert:
- Prelude: Chorale in E Major (Cesar Franck)
- Invocation by Dr. Jerry W. Trexler
- Missa Brevis (Giovanni Pierluigi de Palestrina)
- Mass in G (Franz Schubert)
- Offertory: Chorale-Prelude: With Joy I Await the Lovely Summertime (Brahms)
- American Jazz Mass (Frank P. Tirro)
