Have a question on triple albums and more sets.

I know when you enter an album, if you have a third disc, you're supposed to enter it in the contribution notes area and the moderators will enter it.

This seems like putting a big load on already over-worked moderators, and I have noticed it's often a very long time before they can get to it.

I have seen a number of posters instead add the extra tracks in the first regular public notes block, or occasionally as a comment so everyone can see them. (If it's only a track or two on each side I've been guilty of that myself)

Is this acceptable?

I'm asking now because since I got through the vocals, I'm almost done with the Christmas LP's, now I'm starting on the compilations, and there are quite a few box sets there. (not to mention the hundred or so K-Tels that are 22 tracks!)

Hi there, Extra tracks and third+ LP discs should be placed in the contributions section, with possibly a note in the Make Correction stating that you've done so to ensure the Mods take notice. Yes there is a slight backlog in the corrections list for Vinyl Albums and CD Albums but we've been working to reduce this should be up to date in the next week or so.

Thanks;

I Just didn't want to make extra work for anybody if it could be avoided.

It's what us mods are here for, Don, don't worry about it (although it may take us a little time to catch up with the submissions).

You can add extra discs to CD Albums yourself by clicking "Add Missing Info" at the bottom of the page, and then "Add Extra Tracks" at the top of the following page :-)

Be nice if we had something like that for Vinyl, especially when you're entering those Longines or Reader's Digest ten disc sets!

That feature will be available for vinyl albums soon I should think.

In consideration for my poor, tired fingers, I'd limit myself to 2CD or 2LP sets!

Ran into a major problem with doing it the way we're supposed to!

Had an 8 record boxed set (One of the infamous "Reader's Digest" sets.)

Entered discs 3 through 8 in the contribution notes like I'm supposed to.
I went to enter the set and got an error "Contribution notes are limited to 1000 characters"

I had to delete 3 discs (half of them!) and re-enter them as a correction.

This particular set didn't have artist notes or composer notes (It was all one artist).
Had I had to enter those, it wouldn't have accepted the three discs that it did. In fact I'd probably have been lucky if I got two!

I don't recall having this problem before. Is this limit something new?

No that limit is always there. However soon you will be able to add extra discs yourself, without requiring a moderator to do it.

What should happen if the record company issued records in a box set and also the individual items were sold separately?
I have the 9 disc "150 Motown Hits Of Gold" box set that was issued in the U.K. in the mid 1980s. Currently one disc is on 45worlds .... http://www.45worlds.com/vinyl/album/wl72405
At the time record shops were selling the individual L.P.s apart from disc #9 which was only available as part of the box set (it contained recently recorded tracks and was described in the box-set as a "Bonus Sampler Album").
When I get around to entering this do I enter it as individual items or as one set? And if I do enter it as one set what happens to the existing entry?

What I would do and have done in the past is make sure all nine albums are entered on the system as individual entries, with full details and scans etc. Then create a new entry for the box set and put in the notes the links to the albums and explain that #1-8 were available individually and that #9 was only available as part of the box set.

The individual albums can then also have notes entered linking them back to the box set once it is created.

An example is this Beatles box set.

I myself would put web links to each album in the notes so you can quickly go back and forth between them.

Hope that helps but please ask if you need more help or help with the linking.

Steve

Sladesounds - Having had a look at that Beatles box-set I'm thinking of entering each of the regularly available discs separately (with the notes stating that they were also part of a box-set) and then enter the box-set as a single item with disc 9 (the set-only release) as the track listing of the box-set (with the notes mentioning the other 8 releases with links in the way you have suggested).
I could then use the "Add linked release" facility to link each of the 8 individually available discs with the "Box Set".
If I do that then each of the 8 regularly available discs should display the box set as "linked" and the box set should display all of the 8 discs as "linked". This might make it easier for the casual visitor to 45Worlds to see what is going on.
I think the situation here is a bit different from The Beatles box-set as the 8 discs were brand new compilations rather than pre-existing releases. Essentially the 8 discs chronologically presented U.K. Top 20 Motown entries from 1964 to 1985, though for contractual reasons Stevie Wonder releases after 1971 were excluded.
Anyway ... I'm about to start to photo it all so watch this space.

Please don't use Add Linked Release for this purpose - that should only be used for variants of the same album where the tracklisting is the same (usually to link releases from different countries, and so on).

You can link them using normal URL links in the Notes section (we can add those for you once the records are on as you obviously won't be able to do so at the time).

Well, the Motown Hits Of Gold photos are now neatly cropped and ready to go (indeed I have already added some to the already existing entries for Volumes 4 and 5).

It looks like I'll be returning to the original idea, mentioned by Sladesounds, of adding each disc as its own entry and the packaging as a separate one as I've noticed that the discs are numbered WL 72401 through to WL 72409 whereas the packaging has its own number ... WL 72410. And I shall resist the temptation to use the "Linked release" facility.

By the time I get to the overall entry I will have the web-links for each individual entry so for that one I should be abe to link that back to its component parts, in the meantime I shall put in the notes that each release was also part of a greater whole ... for example for Disc 1 I have put ....

"Available individually or as Disc 1 in a 9 Disc Box-Set "150 Motown Hits Of Gold" issued as WL 72410."

When the whole lot are in then no doubt the mods will take great delight in referring the 9 individual entries to the entry for WL 72410.

Well .. I've now added the packaging and the links to the individual items seem to work .. all that remains is for one of the Mods to link the individual items back to this!!

It would also be nice if the previously entered volumes 4 and 5 had the following in their notes ....

"Available individually or as Disc 4 in a 9 Disc Box-Set "150 Motown Hits Of Gold" issued as WL 72410."

and

"Available individually or as Disc 5 in a 9 Disc Box-Set "150 Motown Hits Of Gold" issued as WL 72410."

And if the catalogue number for Volume 4 were amended from "WL72404" to "WL 72404" to fit the format of the other entries that would be the cherry on the icing on the top of the cake ...
