I think we might need a users thread of tips for taking photos of the sleeves.
I had a lot of problems doing a set of motorhead sleeves, shot in daylight, because of the mimimum distance to focus in order the whole sleeve in the frame I found they were quite reflective? Very awkward!

I had a look on the web (nearest PC World is about 40 miles away) and no cheap ones showing up.
However I have just bought a new printer and tested a mouse scanner so I thought I would let you all know.
LG Mouse Scanner available for around £50 - waste of time, very clever bit of software and nice mouse however it can't cope with something as large as a 12" cover - basically as far this site goes a waste of time and my one is heading to ebay.
What I did buy however was an A3+ Epson WF7515 from Tesco direct for £129. Perfect (and the ink is cheap). The scanner actually only scans A3 not A3+ size (297 × 420 mm) however using Paint.net two scans merge together quiet easily to produce a full cover scan with some nice results.
This scan

is two scans joined with the join around the letter "N" in the bands name.
Col, do you have a model number or link for that £30 scanner?
I'll be popping back in to pick one up on Friday as I didn't have any cash/cards on me when I saw them. Will report back then. I think it was one of the cheaper brands - possibly Epson - and a flatbed

If you need to photograph a record, try to position it in indirect bright light, don't use flash, and position the camera accurately above and central to the record. Try to support the camera firmly or use the time delay setting to avoid shake from pressing the shutter
When editing photos of records or sleeves, the image sizes will vary, so attention to the resizing percentage is needed. Photos often show a perspective view, with trapezoidal distortion of the image, and some correction can be made (paint.NET) within the rotate/zoom dialog box (CTRL + SHIFT + Z) by using the 'Roll-ball' with care. The effect can be seen in this image

Just revived the camera and biggest problems per Juke Jules are indeed regulating the outside light source and being set dead centre over the sleeve when shooting. Two or three attempts may be necessary but it does work.
This is going to be a major issue here. The cartoon of a Dalek seeking dominion of the universe encountering a staircase comes to mind. If push comes to shove then the only option is for interested parties to make a 13" scanner as it seems clear the major electrical companies have let slip with their market research

I've changed my technique and got a noticeably better result.
1] Im photoing the records flat on a table beside the window in daylight
2] I have the room light switched on
3] turn off the camera flash
That kills most of the unwanted reflection
Now I am using an old Nikon coolpix which has a handy fold out monitor screen on it so I have the focus set as standard [ie dont use the zoom] and I have tried to get the camera as square onto the flat record as possible. This ideally needs a tripod which can tilt the camera to a full 90 degrees and hold it steady, I think.
I have redone the following Motorhead records - Ace of Spades and the back of "Beer Drinkers".

They're definitely Epson but had sold out at the Cambridge store by the time I went back. Despite the unit being 13", the actual screen size was max to A3 paper size, which is a little too small to take 12" records, apparently
I bought myself a A3 scanner (420x297mm) which is a little bit too small for a fullsize scan but in most cases the important parts of the artwork can be scanned in one go.
The only problem is that the scan isn't a square image ie 700x700 pixels but something like 700x735 pixels. Sometimes I need to do two scans and stitch them with Microsoft ICE, for example when text would get get lost when doing one scan only.
I hope that my "non-square" scans look okay and not too odd!?
