I agree with Jake on the issues with the European category and the International category is just as poorly thought through. The MODS are trying to grapple with these problems but have failed to come up with any solutions in over a year now. Meanwhile, Jake many others have boycotted the site until a remedy is found. The site is at a stalemate and these are not the only issues that are problems that are discouraging new users from joining or contributing to the site.
Another problem in my view is that while these problems with CDs have festered away countless new categories have been introduced magazines, books, film, TV, DVDs, and even games. 45cat started as a music site and thankfully the initial site for singles still is. This part of the site has turned into a site for about 100 to 200 collectors that seem to be in some sort of point scoring game.
The people at the top of tree in the point scoring game seem to be mostly either MODS or people (ex-traders or shop owners) that have huge collections and some people (me) that moved over to this site when it was just for vinyl albums - early in the site's history.
Forgive me for being cynical but I believe this is a valid observation. It seems to me and I'm sure to many new users to the site that the select group of users mentioned above are controlling or manipulating the site to play the 45cat point scoring game rather than to create a site that user friendly and attractive to new members. Jake's reaction to using the site is testimony to this.
So how about we scrap the point system, get rid of books, magazines, DVDs, Games, Films, TV and any other none music formats and concentrate on what brought us all here in the first place, cataloging formats of music and get that right like 45Cat Singles did.
The myriad of formats and point system have turned this site into a club for a few hundred people to play a long game of one-upmanship with their collections. Worse still is that the guidelines and problems with CD Albums and Singles are making the site next to useless as a resource for the general public.
In my view this part of 45Cat is in a severe and protracted crisis that has the potential to render the site obselete. Bit of a shame really.

Lee, as you know from our previous correspondence, the admins/mods are aware of the issues this problem is causing some users. As said the bottom line is finding a solution as to what will really work. You state the category "Europe" is defunct, I can guarantee that several will argue that it is not.
It looks like some of the site coding will have to be changed by OC to come up with an acceptable working solution. It is a pain, and I also would like the situation resolved but a quick fix is not the answer.
It must be remembered that the site is free for members and run & funded by the admins in their own time at their own cost. Any coding changes etc. are done by OC on his own in his free time.
I appreciate Jake has boycotted the site over this issue and I think that is a bit drastic but that is his choice. However, I can't see his actions resulting in an overnight fix being found.
I understand what you are saying about how this site has grown. I agree with you. However, the beauty of the site is you can pick and choose what you want - me, I only really use LPs and CDs, most of the rest passes me by as I have no interest in train tickets, video games or crisp packets.
From day one 45Worlds has been marketed as a "collectors site" not a "music collectors site". It just happens that the first (and most prominent) items were music related (LPs, 78s & CDs).
The point scoring game you refer to will apply to some even if the site becomes streamlined, it happens on 45cat. IMHO it happens on all sites where individuals like to be seen as superusers, top dogs or whatever they want to call themselves.
Here I think that the reason 50% of the "top" 25 scorers are Mods has little to do with them being Mods. It is based on what they contribute to the site. It just happens those with the most time to input to the site also happen to be those with the most time to "mod" the site, hence their appointment.
I can assure you on the mod side we police each other as much as any other user and we would not allow a mod to manipulate the site to improve their standing.
The modding is time consuming and I am sure if you have the time and the inclination to become a mod, then admins would be delighted to have you on board; your knowledge and entries are always factual and accurate.
I don't see any points scoring games going on, and if I did I would just ignore them.
There is an ongoing issue over this whole "Europe" thing, but no-one caused that to happen. It's just a problem with the way marketing and manufacturing have evolved over the last 20 years or so and there's no neat, clean answer - but so what? The country designation of a CD is hardly the cornerstone of the site. Just accept it's not 100% perfect and use the site as you would.

I also have no interest in points. I still have a long way to go to just entering my collection both here and 45cat. Most of my modding time is used on 45cat doing corrections to items I come across when entering my own. Primarily I requested Mod status here to allow me to accurately enter the 'American Top 40' LP box sets.

Hmm...I seem to have hit nerve with my point-scoring comment but it is just an observation and whether you personally are involved is not an issue. I have had a number PMs from members that have seen me "bearing down" on them in "all important" 45Cat points table. So I stand by my comment and whether you take part or are disinterested is irrelevant. The point is it matters to some members.
Anyway, back to the countries fiasco. I have listed countless (hundreds) of CDs and CD singles that were made in the EU as European but have bought them all in Australia as standard stock. This situation also extends to US releases but I list them also as US releases even though I've bought them in Australia. Technically, as per the guidelines, I am wrong but I'm also sick and tired of trying to defend classifying such releases as International to other members and MODS.
The way the Australian retail market has developed gives it the potential to make, I would hazard a guess, 50-60% of all the currently listed USA and European CDs International. I don't have the catalogues but The VJ or Pomegranate could probably give a better estimate of what percentage of Australian retail CDs are from the USA or European sources.
Europe has I would say a higher percentage of CDs available in Australia and this is my reasoning behind the comment that Europe category is "defunct" as it stands at the moment.
This is also why I like Jake's proposed solution to our problems in this area.
Finally, sladesounds you suggest that I should apply to be MOD well surely you jest can't you see I'm a rocker... oops Wrecker. If I get out of court on Friday with some dignity left I might consider it.

Hello Jake,
No, nothing's happened. My advice would be to extend your vacation. Don't worry you won't be alone there are a fair number of other 45World catters doing the same thing. I have had to stop using the CDSingles and CDWorld several times myself due how infuriating it can be using the site's criteria when listing CDs of any kind. I persevered though just because if I start something I like to finish it.
What I have learned in the process is that from an Australian perspective you can fairly easily list CDs any way you like. The European experience, I know, is different but as it is at the moment nothing has changed that I'm aware.
Typically, when these issues are raised some MODS will reply saying things along the lines of "we're working hard on this behind the scenes". Well, that's all well and good but if there are no updates or direct communication to site members on what this entails and where it is all going or explanations of what problems the MODS are dealing with it looks as though nothing is happening at all. Perhaps, a MOD could provide us with an update on where this problem stands at the moment?
I've been working on some suggestions but still need time to nut them out fully because my last venture into CDWorld revealed some problems I had not encountered before. I'm going on holiday (in the real world tomorrow) but when I get back I'll open this topic up in a forum and offer some suggestions on how we may deal with it.

Well, Brexit popped and now all UK CDs have to have a hard border on their scans or photos. On the up side Jake you may as well enter your CDs as you see fit because just about the only people on the site that even attempt to follow the guidelines are PhilMH and myself. So I reckon go ahead in whatever manner you see fit. That's current norm in all the CD worlds.
