George Slv 13th Dec 2021 | | TVThe Statler Brothers Show (1991 - 1998) | moax429, did TNN fold first, or did Viacom just buy them out? CBS was biased against Country and screwed it up. But now the country folks started a new network called RFD.

George Slv 25th Dec 2020 | | TVStars Of The Grand Ole Opry (1955 - 1956) | I only know that the TV series was named the Country Show. Gannaway may have used Stars Of The Grand Ole Opry for theatrical showings and later for video. They might have tried to use it at the start of the TV series. The Grand Ole Opry disputed his use of the name.
I've added an image from the closing of one show on video showing Al Gannaway. Images of him were not easy to find.
|
George Slv 4th May 2020 | | TVCircus Time (1956 - 1957) | I can't think of a more overlooked series that was so significant. Like Sullivan it had all kinds of acts including musical stars of the day like The Diamonds. It rated in the top ten for young viewers.
IMDB did not have it listed until yesterday. There is one collector DVD on Amazon.com that sold out long ago. Only a clip of a Buster Keaton skit can be found online. Start searching, collectors.
Paul Winchell was a ventriloquist who hosted and also did routines with his wooden dummies.

George Slv 11th Sep 2018 | | TVRoy Orbison And Friends: A Black And White Night (1988) | Emmy-Lou Harris was not in the cast. The show is not continuing, it was a Special. There should be a category like that here.
I submitted these corrections but they are not made.
|
George Slv 27th Aug 2018 | | TVRoy Orbison: Black And White Night 30 (2017) | I can't tell from IMDB that it was shown on TV in US. How long was it, how much of the DVD content was on?

George Slv 27th Aug 2018 | | TVRoy Orbison And Friends: A Black And White Night (1988) | ReviewBarbara Orbison's gift to her husband to create a definitive stage performance. It collects several major musical stars to accompany Roy, although they do not do any solo performances. For example J.D. Souther recorded his "You're Only Lonely" inspired by "Only The Lonely", but he is only in the background with others as backup singers. Bruce Springsteen is in the foreground doing harmony vocals next to Roy and playing guitar. During some guitar breaks he and James Burton have an extended lead guitar duel.
With so much star power together, everyone is having a whale of a time in this dynamic show.
Barbara filmed it in black and white for the sake of the nostalgic effect. Aired on the Cinemax premium network, and released on video shortly.
In 2017 Roy's sons created an extended reedited release with many extras on disc. It is cropped to 16:9, which is fine for distant shots but loses image in closeups.

George Slv 27th Aug 2018 | | TVRoy Orbison: Black And White Night 30 (2017) | This should be under disc releases. The TV special was1988, did not have 30 in the title, and was ~55 min. It was not a TV Series either.

George Slv 27th Feb 2018 | | TVDon't Knock The Rock (1977) | I see comments on the web that seem to say that this compilation was first shown on September 30, 1964 titled Whole Lotta Shakin. Such as a comment 5 years ago on YouTube. This would mean the Lewis and Richard shows from early 1964 were recompiled already that year and Lewis's title was reused, and then it was rebroadcast in 1977 with new title. I don't have confirmation of this. See a discussion at missingepisodes.com.

George Slv 6th Feb 2018 | | TVCountry Hoedown (1956 - 1965) | A staple of early Canadian TV, broadcast live from Toronto. There was a separate US show of that name at the time in Nashville. Gordie Tapp was from London Ontario. He later starred in Hee Haw in US.

George Slv 2nd Nov 2017 | | TVToast Of The Town (1948 - 1971) | Shows are being aired now on the US Decades channel. They are cut to 30 minutes, favoring music acts. http://www.decades.com/schedule/ Anyone have a mind to record them?
And to add this comment, for all the hype about Sullivan being stiff, you should see in the earliest episodes how the opening had him running in from the side hopping down stairs past dancers. See an example at https://archive.org/details/toast-of-the-town-s-02-e-21-divx .

George Slv 24th Apr 2017 | | TVCosmos (1980) | I kept this on VHS, including Turner. I give Sagan credit for mentionning what Velikovsky wrote about a heavenly body interacting with earth to create upheavals.
Turner asked him "are you a socialist?" Sagan was an establishment Jew, but answered "I don't know what socialism is". Turner was a conservative with a magic touch, but it was taken from him by Time-Warner, and the "bankers" refused to loan him funds when he was ready to buy the MGM studio. Time-Warner gave him a position without power to "keep him out of trouble", as they would put it.
Yer supposed ta know these things before ya start Ted.

George Slv 24th Jan 2017 | | TVS.H.E. (1980) | ReviewReview
Some reviews from old Movie Guide books. Reviews are dropped from later editions for minor films.
Leonard Maltin 1993:
James Bondish derring-do involving a woman superspy who crosses swords with a suave playboy head of an international crime ring. (S*H*E stands for security hazards expert.) Script by Bond veteran Richard Maibaum. Average.
Steven Scheuer 1990:
Slick production values, exotic location shooting, and the beautiful Cornelia Sharpe as a sexy female James Bond-type are the draws here. S*H*E (Securities Hazards Expert) is hot on the trail of international blackmailers who plan to jeopardize the world's oil supply if their demands aren't met. 2/4
Martin and Porter 2003:
This average made-for-TV spy-action thriller has one twist .. a female James Bond. Beautiful Cornelia Sharpe is S.H.E. (Security Hazards Expert). She pursues Robert Lansing, the US syndicate boss, throughout Europe. Omar Sharif makes an appearance as a wine baron. 3/5
Richard Maibaum, James Bond writer, wrote a big-time screenplay but the result was weak.
The entire film is available at Youtube at the moment but beware the shape is all wrong.

George Slv 11th Dec 2016 | | TVTightrope! (1959 - 1960) | This show had a suspenseful atmosphere, and was one of the best. I don't recall it having too much physical violence.

George Slv 8th Dec 2016 | | TVM.A.N.T.I.S. (1994 - 1995) | ReviewWhen Fox TV was young a few people got a chance to see this superhero one-hour series. A variation on the suit that makes you invincible. It was typically well produced, with some weaknesses.
In the 1980s media violence was increasing and people were expecting 1990s violence. But the tide turned, and here the producers purposely toned it down. But to the point of eliminating it and killing it. The M.A.N.T.I.S. would not don his suit til the last five minutes, then just walk onto the crime scene and take control. No hitting or fighting or throwing or smashing for Pete's sake. So a waste of time and it did not last the season.

George Slv 8th Dec 2016 | | TVTekWar (1994 - 1996) | At the start Torri Higginson was playing Evigan's assistant. This was an appealing female. I think I made the fatal error of mentionning this to a feminist member of the establishment at the time. Next thing I knew Torri was off the show and then some hard-edged masculine female replaces her - Lexa Doig.
Lessons learned too late. Be deathly careful what ya say to whom. or something.

George Slv 28th Nov 2016 | | TVMisfits Of Science (1985 - 1986) | 16 episodes produced. Dean Paul Martin was Dean Martin's son, and was killed in a military plane crash later that decade. One guy had the power to throw electric bolts, another had the power to shrink for a period, Courtney had the power of telekinesis.
