Recently discovered home movie footage from 1936 offers a unique and powerful insight into what people in Germany were thinking and experiencing. In these pre-war days, Germany was on a high and the Hitler Youth seemed like fun and games, but Nazi control was soon to become an all-pervading force, militarising the nation. The rise of anti-Semitism is explicit and grotesque, shocking even though we now have the knowledge of what happens next. The film follows an infantry division during the invasion of France, fighting their way to Dunkirk, and reveals a new perspective on what the evacuation meant for the average German soldier. On the Eastern Front, a far darker and more visceral journey across the endless Russian steppe and the almost unimaginable horrors unleashed during Operation Barbarossa is captured by a soldier. As well as amateur movie footage, the film charts the progress of the war through the diaries of ordinary Germans, some dizzy with excitement at what Hitler had achieved, others horrified by the effect it was having on their friends and families. Christmas in Germany 1941 is an unsettling time. Food is scarce, the weather is freezing and news from the front line in Russia is causing Germans to realise the war is a very long way from over. The stage is set for the second half of the conflict. Through the home movies and diaries of ordinary Germans, this film charts Hitler’s dreams crumbling and the moral reckoning the German people must now face. It reveals the stories of people battling to save their families from deportation to the death camps, while others endure the horrors of ever more deadly bombing raids, all set against a backdrop of propaganda and false hope pouring forth from Nazi high command. In Russia we meet a German doctor who throws himself into the firing line at every opportunity, not to win glory but to save his wife and three young children from deportation to the death camps in the east, while in Dresden a Jewish diary writer struggles to deal with ever-mounting restrictions and deportations. We also meet some of those forced to live under German rule, including extraordinary footage of a group of Jews living in hiding just a mile from Anne Frank, and a family in Normandy enjoying a bucolic summer before they find themselves on the front line when the Allies take on the German troops on the Atlantic Wall. The film then moves to the endgame of the war, the choices faced as the net tightened and the crazy efforts to fight to the bitter end even as all hope is gone. 6 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? I remember this sitcom and great acting from Keith Barron and Gwen Taylor, and well acted and very soon this series will be screened again on Forces TV later this year, and I can`t wait to see the series screened again. ✔︎ Helpful Review? R.I.P.Julian Bream, you`re one of my favourite guitarists, especially working with John Williams,Peter Pears, etc.I do remember this series very well, when first transmitted for Channel Four in 1985 on Sunday Nights, when screened at 8:00 p.m.There are 8 episodes in total, not only he presented the show, but he devises the TV programme, and travels to Spain, and also performs with his guitar, and also he`s a great lutenist performing like the 17th century such as Bach,Sanz amongst others. The final episode-we hear the complete performance of Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo [the most popular guitar concerto of the 20th century as well as Fantasia Para un Gentilhombre],performed with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner. Also in 1985,RCA Red Seal released Guitarra!-The Guitar In Spain as a Double Album,Double Cassette and a Double CD to cash on the TV series. But I will treasure the series on DVD,as well as his guitar playing,in which I`ve Got on CD,and I still remember him so much. 8 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? I remember this series very well and first screened on Saturday Nights on ITV,and among them participants were on the show, such as the Welsh Comedian John Sparkes, when he teamed with another comedian Harry Enfield, which they called themselves Dusty and Dick, but sadly they voted off as far as I remember.Among the professions on the show such as singers,magicians,stand-up comedians, etc.I think this TV show ran for one series, and I hope they broadcast again on Youtube,so I know who were the acts on the show. The theme song is performed by Kate Robbins. 6 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? Don't let the welsh dialogue (with sub-titles) put you off this compelling drama. A good solid police drama with lots of little twists and turns and smaller sub-plots to keep you engrossed. Series One and Two both are equally viewable and I would recommend you spend sometime getting sucked into this series. Available on BBC iPlayer as at August 2020. 7 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? Based on Celeste Ng's 2017 bestseller, "Little Fires Everywhere" this mini-TV series (spanning nearly 8 hours) follows the intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and the enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives. I found it an interesting and engaging story line that was helped no end by its star cast. It was interesting how, as the series played out, me and my partner chose which character's side we were on only to find that maybe all the characters are very similar and in their own way flawed. Starts with a big fire scene (not a spoiler) that then has you guessing all the way through who set it.......is it as simple as it appears? Watch and find out! 3 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? If not the best show and my all time favourite, Robin Williams was a true comedian and in Mork & Mindy he showcased his skills of making people laugh, each episode was amazing and well planned out. Though anything Robin Williams acted in was great work though this is his all time best show. 6 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? Probably the most genuinely funny surreal show of the late-'60s. 2 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? Proper Sci-Fi!!! I have one rule of thumb that determines for me if something is genuine sci-fi, or just a fantastic light show fantasy piece: Do I come away from this with more questions that I went in with? (Anyone who claims to have the answers hasn't asked enough questions yet :) And this really lived up to billing, as it deals with some fairly predictable, and well worn fare of many worlds / multi-verse / fate / destiny / free will themes, but ingeniously, uses that predictability from established formulas to lead you well and truly up many garden paths, only to bamboozle you by playing with your expectations of what is about to happen, and the general meaning of what it's all about... then throwing a neat twist in just at the punch line / expected outcome. What is Devs? Well it's safe to say there is pretty much a Fight club rule on this one... ..."you do not talk about..." You get the picture, and that is both one of the points of the show, and what makes it difficult to fully explain without spoiling it. But it most certainly is centred around the themes I mentioned earlier. A cool, glacial slab of minimalist sci-fi with a great story, lots of drama and moments of action, opaque, but reveals itself in the end... (Not like some TV shows, that only think they're being profound, but ultimately go nowhere... often because the writer(s) haven't actually thought it through, and got a destination in mind from the outset... Lost, you might say :) ... and shows that it actually has warmth and soul to it's ideas (and humour!) A great self contained (or not, possibly) concept, that will be watched again from the start, in the newly attained context of having seen it once to the end. Marvellous! 4 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? An enjoyable romp through the classic Dracula story. Broadcast as three 90 minute episodes the show has it all, drama, suspense, a little bit of comedy and of course horror. The BBC has done well in commissioning such a well written show (by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat of Sherlock fame). The excellent online reviews such as "bloody stunning" are well justified. What you get is an update, well shot , adaptation of the original vampire story. Whilst not a true devotee of the horror genre I thoroughly recommend give this a viewing. 6 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? I remember this show quite well, when this series used to be screened three episodes per week at 1:30 p.m.,and also launched the careers of well-known celebrities such as Bob Hoskins [who looked a bit like a car dealer],Brenda Fricker,Judy Parfitt,Ben Kingsley,Nigel Havers,Peter Capaldi,Brian Cox,Tom Conti,Gregor Fisher, etc. Not Only I loved the series so much, but also my late mother liked the series, and still brings me back memories, and oh yes,In case you want to know the actual music introduction opening of the TV series is of course the opening bars of the fourth movement [Allegretto] from Sinfonietta by Leos Janacek,in which I like it so much as well as the TV series, and also I like the celebrities and they look so young and how they dressed beautifully. 6 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? An absolutely extrordinary documentary made by John Maloof who stumbled over some of Vivian Maier's photograph negatives at an auction room. He subsequently hunted down her storage locker and other box lots sold at the auction room and introduced the world to the many talents of a completely unknown gifted street photographer. WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE Vivian Dorothy Maier (February 1, 1926 – April 21, 2009) was an American street photographer. Maier worked for about forty years as a nanny, mostly in Chicago's North Shore, pursuing photography during her spare time. She took more than 150,000 photographs during her lifetime, primarily of the people and architecture of Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles, although she also traveled and photographed worldwide. During her lifetime, Maier's photographs were unknown and unpublished; many of her negatives were never printed. A Chicago collector, John Maloof, acquired some of Maier's photos in 2007, while two other Chicago-based collectors, Ron Slattery and Randy Prow, also found some of Maier's prints and negatives in her boxes and suitcases around the same time. Maier's photographs were first published on the Internet in July 2008, by Slattery, but the work received little response. In October 2009, Maloof linked his blog to a selection of Maier's photographs on the image-sharing website Flickr, and the results went viral, with thousands of people expressing interest. Maier's work subsequently attracted critical acclaim, and since then, Maier's photographs have been exhibited around the world. ~ From Wikipedia I first heard about her through an Alan Yentob 'Imagine' documentary on BBC4 back in 2013. 4 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? Another top quality BBC series that I recommend taking the time to watch. Eight 40 minute episodes that I personally watched over two nights. Based on the Villanelle novellas by Luke Jennings the series serves up a feast of subtle British humour and action carried out with quality acting by the players. Although not billed as such, this drama has a thick underlying element of black humour that just makes it a pleasure to watch. Sandra Oh as Eve is excellent but Jodie Comer as Villanelle steals the show with a character that you can't help to adore given her quirky, if some what, dark and bizarre behaviour (but then as a psychopathic contract killer what can you expect). The background stories of the main players fills out over the series but there is obviously a lot more to see and learn and episode 8 leaves me in no doubt that there will be a future series (or two). 7 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? The story is based on a ex-soldier now employed as part of the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch of London's Metropolitan Police Service. Issues stemming from his Afghanistan service are affecting both his private and work life as the officer assigned to protect the Home Secretary. The whole series moves at a very fast pace with a well written story-line that has many twists and turns to keep you guessing up to the last episode. This one lives up to its hype, I highly recommend watching this series. 8 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? R.I.P.Geoffrey Hayes, you`re one of the greatest presenters and will be sadly missed, and certainly entertained children of all ages.I remember the show, when I was 5 years old, when the show came out and used to screen on Mondays to Fridays at 12:10 p.m. One TV critic described Rainbow as Britain`s answer to Sesame Street, according to one presenter, and I will miss you so much, and you`re one of the best in Children`s TV shows. 3 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? R.I.P.Denis Norden,I will miss you so much and you gave us a lot of laughter in the world of comedy, and definately entertained us. 4 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? I remember this show, and used to be screened on Monday nights and it was 40 years ago, when I was 11 years ago at the time and I love the series especially the intro and outro music written and performed by Dudley Simpson,in which I admired. There are 52 episodes in total, but we lost so many people who appeared in the show such as Gareth Thomas,David Jackson,Peter Tuddenham, but one of my favourite actress Jacqueline Pearce sadly passed away on the 3/9/2018,who played Servalan, and I think she`s look so beautiful for the role, and she`s look terrific, but definately sadly missed for me.Other celebrities who took part in Blake`s 7 such as Brian Blessed,Tony Caunter [from Eastenders],Karl Howman,John Savident,Ronald Lacey the, late Kevin Lloyd [from The Bill],late Roy Kinnear,Lynda Bellingham and not to mention Glynis Barber [best remembered in Dempsey & Makepeace and Eastenders] I hope they`ll bring back the series as a re-run to celebrate 40 years of the series. 4 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? Barbara Orbison's gift to her husband to create a definitive stage performance. It collects several major musical stars to accompany Roy, although they do not do any solo performances. For example J.D. Souther recorded his "You're Only Lonely" inspired by "Only The Lonely", but he is only in the background with others as backup singers. Bruce Springsteen is in the foreground doing harmony vocals next to Roy and playing guitar. During some guitar breaks he and James Burton have an extended lead guitar duel. With so much star power together, everyone is having a whale of a time in this dynamic show. Barbara filmed it in black and white for the sake of the nostalgic effect. Aired on the Cinemax premium network, and released on video shortly. In 2017 Roy's sons created an extended reedited release with many extras on disc. It is cropped to 16:9, which is fine for distant shots but loses image in closeups. 5 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? They say the that the book is always better than than the film, but having read the excellent novel by Liane Moriarty I can assure you that that this series is as good as, if not better than the book. Shot on location in the wonderful Monterey, California and its surrounding area, the story tells the tale of a group of mothers who on the outside look to have wonderful complete lives but each have their own (big) little lies that are told to just let them cope/survive with their lives. The screen writing is superb and it quickly draws you into the storyline as the character's lives are slowly looked at. Through struggles in their marriages, parental problems, sexual jealously the mystery deepens with each instalment. You know from the first episode there is a killing, but it is not until the end (of season 1) that you find out who is killed and by whom. In the meanwhile you yourself will find several possible victims with a growing list of possible killers. The acting is excellent and by the way the soundtrack is brilliant! The first season closely follows the story set out in the novel however I see that there will be a second season so I await with interest to see where the series will go next. 5 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? Absolutely Funny. Pure comic classic. Can't recommend it enough. 2 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? Excellent series though not in the same class as TP (there was one episode which directly referenced that other show, though, where two characters stopped talking and for no apparent reason, started clicking their fingers along to a very TP-like tune!). 5 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? Undeniably the most unexpected and pleasant surprise of the fall 2017 US TV season, this big-hearted, extremely well-written and performed science-fiction dramedy caught a lot of people off-guard, seeing it was created by and mostly written by Seth MacFarlane, who up till now has been known primarily for raunchy, edgy, low-brow comedy like Family Guy. It was like Frankie Howerd suddenly doing a police drama. But MacFarlane has hidden depths and it's forgotten that he spearheaded the well-regarded sequel to Carl Sagan's science masterpiece Cosmos and has been trying to mount his own Star Trek series for years. As a result, The Orville feels more like a Star Trek series than the latest version of that franchise, Discovery (it even has a number of Trek veterans producing and directing the show and occasionally features cameos from actors associated with the Trek franchise). It perfectly reflects Gene Roddenberry's optimistic future worldview, but through a modern-day lens. It looks and feels like Star Trek TNG, but some of the issues examined, ranging from transgender rights to sexual consent and social media peer pressure, give the show a "ripped from the headlines feel." Even with the occasional off-colour joke. The cast of the show are superb, with Halston Sage's Alara becoming a fan favourite though, to be fair, all the characters have become beloved even over the dozen episodes that made up the first season. The fact a lot of what it does has been done before - several episodes have used similar plots to Trek, Black Mirror, etc - is actually a strength as the show is recognizing that the stories and themes are still relevant for a 2017 audience. The Orville isn't perfect - there are rough edges, some of the stands the show takes on issues are controversial with some, and not all the humour scores - but for those wanting an oasis from the (often) MA-rated, dark, depressing SF series on TV right now (for the most part the only relief from that are the superhero shows and even a number of them have gone dark and MA-rated), and if Star Trek Discovery is not appealing (though there's no law saying you can't enjoy both), then The Orville is worth savoring. 4 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review? After a comedy pilot revival to celebrate 60 years of the sitcom from radio to TV,the new series of Porridge, written by the same comedy writers, and this time Kevin Bishop who fills Ronnie Barker`s shoes plays Norman Stanley Fletcher`s son Nigel Norman Fletcher has been banged up in Wakeley Prison for a series of cybercrimes and Mark Bonnar will play Officer Meekie, which is like Mr.Mackay and the new series starts on 6/10/2017 with 6 new episodes. 5 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review?
