albert 15th Aug 2017 | | CinemaSole Survivor (1970) | ReviewA WWII bomber is discovered in the desert decades after it was lost in flight. The sole survivor travels out there intending to return home with the remains of the ex-crew members to give them a proper burial but has trouble in locating the bodies. Meanwhile the ghosts of the crew look on, play baseball and ponder the situation.

albert 15th Aug 2017 | | CinemaSole Survivor (1970) | A major wants-list item for me and many others I suspect, one of those once seen never forgotten movies.
..and now you've read the review you might say, oh yeah THAT movie.
[EDIT] I've just found out that it has been released on Blu-ray !!!
and here is a Wikipedia article on the actual missing bomber Lady Be Good that inspired the story.

albert 14th Aug 2017 | | TVStar Trek (1966 - 1969) | Watching this as a kid in the 1960s was mind-blowing, hand-held communicators, doors that automatically slide open, stuff that we take for granted these days. When they re-launched the series they said things would be even better but as soon as the captain talked to the computer and a dalek-like voice responded I knew progress had not been made.

albert 14th Aug 2017 | | TVThe Champions (1968 - 1969) | I loved this show when I was a small kid in the 1960s.
They did reruns around 1994 and I tuned in for the first episode and could not believe how utterly crap it was - a cardboard set with fake snow blowing all around and actors jumping in and out like a pantomime, sample here:

Regarding playing DVDs on your PC - the region codes are checked if you use Microsoft's Media Player and some other software, Mac too. But, there are some download DVD-player applications which do not check region codes, however some of these 'freebies' come with payloads, so if you install that software you may find you suddenly have ad-pushers, internet toolbars, site-tracking, etc loaded onto your computer too.

albert 9th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - A Rocket In My Pocket | Pity that hipster is now something of a negative term worthy of derision when this looks like it has a great selection of some rare rockabilly (which I don't suppose many hipsters would like).

albert 8th Aug 2017 | | Live MusicThe 5th Clerkenwell Festival @ Spa Fields | I booked a table to sell records but could not get myself properly organised so instead just brought along 3 big boxes of 50 pence bargains, many unplayed promos.
Graham7 introduced himself and proved to be the biggest buyer of the day, including a pile of about 100 one-track promo CDs, hi Graham, hope you are enjoying the music.
I was intending to pack up ready for Ten Benson but unfortunately missed them when the DJ opposite the stall cranked up the volume on some unsurprising 60s hits so I couldn't hear what was happening on the live stage and then a French collector came for a long chat.

The modern English language is a mixture of many other country's languages, which is why we have strange spellings and so many words that mean the same thing - which is very fortunate for lyricists, humourists, writers etc. The older languages of the British Isles are of Celtic origin including Welsh and Gaelic tongues, and probably bemuse/confuse tourists who visit the UK.

albert 28th Jul 2017 | | DVDA Fistful Of Dollars - MGM | The 'Network Prologue' in the special features on disc 2 is most amusing (sanctifying the violence in twisted moralistic way), times were certainly different then.

albert 28th Jul 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumMarc Bolan - 20th Century Boy | Agree this is a superb compilation. When I came across it in Rhythm Records London (sadly gone) I could hardly get the wallet out quick enough, such was my excitement.

albert 26th Jul 2017 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Rave On – The Coral Story | These double CDs for labels/genres (expired copyrights) are becoming increasingly harder to find and if you look on the official 'One Day Music/Not Now' website you will see that they are not in the current catalogue so are probably deleted.
I admit that I was thrilled by these 2CD or 3CD of original recordings (some very rare) at bargain prices and presented in mostly great quality (which was unusual), but the copyright thing is troubling. The success of these compilations shows that there is a market and One Day showed how it should be done, ie quantity and quality (since there is a mountain of songs on back catalogue and many are completely forgotten). Whereas prior to this watershed we were continually being sold the same old stuff 'officially' (like a playlist on commercial radio).
I know that the argument about artists not getting any royalties is often put forward, but countless times I have read that the original artists never earned a penny from their recordings even when they were first released. Anyway its for the lawyers to argue, not us buying public.
THANK YOU to the contributors adding the track listings, that's a lot of typing!

albert 23rd Jul 2017 | | CinemaThe Road To God Knows Where (1990) | This shows what bands have to endure on tour between the actual gigs and is quite an eye-opener.
I saw this at a special preview (at the ICA maybe) when it was first released.

albert 23rd Jul 2017 | | CinemaNick Cave And The Bad Seeds : Live At The Paradiso (1992) | Whiplash editing on this live concert makes for a tiresome viewing experience, but the music is good.
The additional documentary on the DVD shows what bands have to endure on tour between the actual gigs and is quite an eye-opener.

albert 23rd Jul 2017 | | Music MemorabiliaSpearmint - A Week Away | I bought the T-shirt at one of Spearmint's London gigs, maybe at The Garage or The Spitz. Apologies for the logo being quite worn out, it did originally look just like the LP.
Good quality cotton which is why its lasted so long.
|
albert 23rd Jul 2017 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Punk 45 | and also The Electric Eels (UK) which made appearances on some of the 101 compilation LPs. There are probably more.
Of course here EE should probably be listed as Die Electric Eels as they are often named that way.
...Looks like a good compilation LP, showing that punk didn't just begin at CBGBs, a lot of these Cleveland bands shared members.

albert 23rd Jul 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumDead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables | The back cover of Dead Kennedys debut LP proved problematic when the 'other' band discovered that their picture had been used without permission. The original shows the 'other' band complete with their heads but with the DK logo on the drum, the back colour has yellow dots. A compromise was the decapitation as per Bodston's scan but I have seen back covers using a completely different image.
|
albert 18th Jul 2017 | | Music Memorabilia[no artist listed] - Usual Adaptor | Yuk, I remember those damn dots. I used to slice the dots off with a razor to prevent picture sleeves from getting pock-marked, though eventually I just banished them all from my collection and now just use a proper centre-hole adaptor.
|
albert 8th Jul 2017 | | CD AlbumDubstar - Disgraceful | the fluffy bunny slipper thing on the cover is the replacement sleeve, the original sleeve was a lot more suggestive (an opened furry purse).

albert 4th Jul 2017 | | MagazineBravo | That's Slade on the front cover.

albert 1st Jul 2017 | | Music MemorabiliaPh Family - T-Shirt | Bought this T-shirt at a London gig ph Family did, (their Ideal Weight EP was released in 1998). The printing is looking a bit rough now but I've had quite a lot of usage from this top, yes I still wear it - just about to put it in the wash.

I never did catch them live unfortunately, but I did see Orange Deluxe who were pretty good.

albert 21st Jun 2017 | | Live MusicThe La's @ The Mayfair | Added tour advert from Sounds. Any La's fans want to add the dates to the database?
|
albert 21st Jun 2017 | | Live MusicTh' Faith Healers @ The Venue, New Cross | Sure would like to have been at this gig.
'Club Awesome' was every Saturday night at The Venue, for a while anyway. I wish the news items would state the location not the club night title (as in this case).
|
albert 21st Jun 2017 | | Live MusicSilverfish @ The Dome, Tufnell Park | Added advert and news item (which lists a few more Stereolab gigs).

albert 21st Jun 2017 | | Live MusicThe Stairs @ Zap Club | Address for The Zap Club:
187-193 Kings Road Arches
BRIGHTON
BN1 1NB
It later became Digital, then The Coliseum, then The Arch

|
albert 21st Jun 2017 | | Live MusicThe Toll @ 100 Club | Added that full page advert and the review. I see the band were on Geffen, then not on Geffen, erm, perhaps coincidentally when Geffen signed Nirvana.
|
albert 20th Jun 2017 | | Live MusicKraftwerk @ Bridgewater Hall | so it should be for £75
|
albert 20th Jun 2017 | | Live MusicThe Toll @ 100 Club | Talk about hyping a band. This gig (and 2 others) were advertised with a regular sized advert in the inky press, then a week or so later the gigs were advertised with a full page ad (very costly). Well they hadn't sold out any of the small venues, so I guess the idea was bigger ad=more ticket sales.
A review of the gig appeared in the inky press a couple of weeks after, it wasn't the most glowing review though it didn't go so far as to say the band were terrible, ...maybe you were one of the "smattering of moderately curious onlookers". Well, did anyone pay to be there, or were the audience just people who were on the guest list?
Who were The Toll anyway???
