Various Artists - The Sound Of Young America
I saw the title to this and thought - a Motown Compilation on a label not associated with Motown(licensee or otherwise) until I saw the track list - A definitely misleading title because "The Sound Of Young America" was Motown's motto and could be seen in the top-right corner of the rear cover of any 1960s Motown issue across all of Motown's labels. None of the artists or groups here ever graced a Motown record. As good as they were, they weren't good enough for Motown.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (1964 - 1968)
And of course, David McCallum went on to "appear" in The Invisible Man - Poor guy! His romantic life was a tragedy. His girlfriends would take him home and their mothers would see right through him(ha-ha).

The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. (1966 - 1967)
While we got "Man From U.N.C.L.E." in Australia, this one passed us by completely. We never got to see in in monochrome or colour(we didn't get colour TV until the test transmissions in late 1974 leading up to the official launch on 1st March, 1975), Our colour TV came too late in any case.

The Flintstones (1960 - 1966)
"The Flintstones was not originally broadcast as a children's program but was pitched to adults"
The above was true of most cartoon features, Even the Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies & Looney Tunes shorts shown at half-time in cinemas, and later on TV weren't really made for kids, it was just fortuitous that kids found them entertaining, though some very early WB Merrie Melodies cartoons that didn't feature any of the recognised characters, were somewhat silly and childish, could be said that they were "infantile" but those ones date back to the 1930s and 1940s. The best of the MM and LT Warner cartoons date from the 1950s and 1960s. As for The Flintstones, this show had an answer in the form of "The Jetsons", same basic idea but brought up to the "future", and also produced by the Hanna/Barbera Productions crew.

Ah, 250,000 copies? Hmmmm...... Ain't quite as rare as "hen's teeth"! Take a walk to your favourite second-hand record store(even where you bought this copy), you'll probably find a few more copies yet.

Kojak (1973 - 1990)
Nope! Nothing odd here, We were just commenting on the fact that Telly Savalas, the guy who played Kojak, actually took that lollipop out of his mouth long enough to record a few songs for MCA. What success they met with is neither here nor there.

I only bought it because it was an example of the MCA label as distributed by EMI in 1974(a scary look into the future, as things turned out, with MCA-Universal trying to swallow up all the other record companies.... sends shivers up my spine! Brrrrrrrr!)

Doctor Who (1963 - Now)
"Can we have a poll on the worse Doctor ever?"
I nominate Matt Smith - The storylines were getting more and more ridiculous during his tenure and he always appeared hyperactive to me. I watched Dr. Who when there wasn't much else on offer on ABC-TV at the time.

.... painful incursion into the world of music
Er, yeah! I've got a British EMI-MCA issue from 1974 of him doing "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" where he actually sings(or tries to) in the chorus line of the song. How to describe the disc? Unusual might be a word one could use.

Rentaghost (1976 - 1984)
Sounds a bit like "Most Haunted", ay? First few series, Great! but then a steady and sad decline into silly gimmicky trashiness. "Most Haunted" started going downhill after Richard Felix left. He cited a "Scooby-Doo" style creeping into the show and that put him off continuing with the show. He(Felix) ended up producing a series of videos where he'd travel around England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland(Republic Of, and Northern[Ulster]), talking about the ghosts that haunt the various landmark locations in the cities, towns and villages in each country. I watched them on YouTube via a website called Hunter TV(an aspirant community TV station forced to operate on-line due to bad decisions by the Minister For Media here in Australia) I think I've just about seen them all. Just as well because those YouTube vids chew up a lot of megabytes, even when they don't get downloaded to your computer but are just "streamed" to it. And those megabytes soon add up to gigabytes(chomp!).

Andy Capp (1988)
The three actors in the "New Tricks" series worked really well together. I'd already mentioned Jim Bolam as Jack Ford and Dennis Waterman as Terry Standing but we should also remember Alun Armstrong as Brian Lane, three brilliantly created characters! Sadly only Dennis Waterman remains from the original cast and he dips out before the final series finishes. But this show retains its quality, even in reruns. Sorry I can't say this of Andy Capp as I have nothing of the series on which to assess it.

MM. your British records(LPs or 45rpm singles/EPs) have had release dates on them since 1958, initially stated as "Recording First Published....." on all labels up to 1964 and on PYE issues into 1965...., then the circled P and the year after it. Oh how I wish we had that in Australia! Year-dates didn't start appearing on Aussie issues until about 1971 is some cases, 1972 in others, and not at all on some other labels still. Another thing I really admire about British records is how the publishing credits are shown, just the company name in ordinary fonts, no trademarks. You've seen Australian LPs EPs and singles pre-1969, no doubt, with those oh-so-wretchedly-ugly publishing company trademarks, about as welcome as a slice of pork or ham at a Jewish Bahmitzvah* celebration(*guessing at spelling there, no offence intended). All-in-all the British labels were far superior in their layout and detail than our Australian labels.

Though I've not seen the series(and can't comment on James Bolam's work in it), I do fondly remember Bolam in New Tricks, which started as Old Dogs, New Tricks, but dropped the "Old Dogs" part of the title by the second series. And another veteran in the show, Dennis Waterman, who also sang the theme song which was originally the Traveling Wilburys' "End Of The Line" but copyright problems forced them to change it to a new song called "End Of The Day" which had to be dubbed in over the opening and closing credits of the first series for subsequent repeat screenings. And oh yes, Waterman's Jerry Standing meeting Amanda Redman's character for the first time: "You're her aren't you? Woof, woof, Bang, bang!"

RC, Ray M. has had an active career, once having played the role of Fred Daly, left-wing ALP stalwart in the ABC mini-series, "True Believers". So he hasn't exactly been out of work for much of his career - he's one of our best character actors, along with Martin Vaughan, Simon Chilvers and Geoff Morell.

Bff, I think the genesis of the DJM record label mirrors that of Motown in some ways. The early productions from the "This" Productions company were leased to Philips or other labels before the DJM label itself finally made an appearance in 1970.

I knew it wasn't a laser disc, Graham, I was just musing about an idea to marry that older disc style(12" diameter disc) to the method used to "write" info to a DVD disc. You couldn't do it with these RCA CED types because of the playback method, almost akin to our good old vinyl LPs, but the laser disc, the idea could be adapted. Just make a DVD of 12 inches diameter and "write" to it in the same way you "write" to DVD discs of the same diameter as CDs.
Of course, the playback deck would have to stand alone on a shelf near the TV and a writable deck(to burn your own discs) would have to be placed alongside a computer, but connected via USB, but the idea is there. And, as I said, the storage capacity of these discs would lend themselves(commercially) to packaging two- or three-disc sets of the Hollywood classics, all the Harry Potter movie, A few volumes of Classic Carry-On comedies, the possibilities are endless. For home movie buffs, the ability to store(much) more than two hours of content on one disc would come in very handy.

The Beatles - Compleat Beatles
I copied my VHS of this to a hard-drive to view at leisure. The first "take" was made from the VHS with the linear stereo audio track, but there was a visual glitch when George Martin was talking about the track, A Day In The Life. When I got the newer copy, still on VHS but with a hi-fi stereo audio track, I made a new "take" which had no visual glitch at the point where the first copy had it. The newer copy came up very good indeed.

Interesting idea I'm having here! Marry the method used to encode content onto DVDs with the diameter of laser discs - think of the storage capacity? The entire Harry Potter series could be carried on a two-disc set with gatefold sleeve(the laser disc was 12", same as an LP album). Yeah!!! And think also of home-burn decks where you make your own.... All your home movies on one disc(come on now, you didn't think I'd suggest you copy feature movies to home-burn laser-discs, did you? Tutt, tutt, naughty, naughty!)

The Beatles - Compleat Beatles
Remarkable! The slick for this DVD is very similar to the original VHS format tape, which had a linear stereo audio track. I wonder. Was the image re-designed to fit 16:9 screens or did they leave it in its original 4:3 aspect ratio, as it was originally made as a TV documentary. That is how I first bought this, on VHS with linear stereo audio. Just a few years back I acquired a new copy, this time with the hi-fi stereo audio, the sound quality only marginally better. Some years back I picked up a VHS recorder that played and recorded in linear stereo. I bought it for the princely sum of $5 at a recycling centre. It still worked to I was able then, for the first time to hear the stereo audio and the linear system gave a good account of itself. The doco, by the way, dates from 1982, even if the DVD is newer.

Is the cast list based on episodes currently screening on British TV? Ray Meagher is the only original cast member remaining in the series, Emily Symons, who is not an original as she wasn't in episode 1, has returned to the series off and on and her character, Marilyn Chambers is now married to John Palmer, played by ex-Country Practice star, Shane Whittington. Melissa George, Les Hill and Dieter Brummer are long gone from this series as of more than 20 years ago.

Seems no-one has any info on this show at all! The Avebury connection sparked my curiosity because of the connection with that Most Haunted edition(Series 1, Ep.3) which dealt with the stones and the Red Lion Pub, as I've mentioned earlier(2 days ago).

Henry, your comments answer mine quite neatly. With Soul/R. & B. so popular in Britain's north, the demand would be extremely high - they cain't get enough, y'all!, or as they might say in London's posher districts, they cannot procure copies in sufficient quantities, old chap!

Looking again at my Australian version, I noted some substitutions. Here's the track list for the Australian version. Compare these to the list shown above.
Side A: 1]Bobby Goldsboro - Honey
2]Vicki Carr - It Must Be Him
3]Brenton Wood - Oogum Boogum Song
4]Gary Lewis & His Playboys - Sealed With A Kiss
5]Cher - You Better Sit Down, Kids
Side B: 1]Jackie DeShannon - The Weight
2]Johnny Rivers - Hey Joe
3]Bobby Vee - Medley: My Girl/Hey Girl
4]Classics IV - Spooky
5]Timi Yuro - What's The Matter, Baby.
As I said earlier, this is a 5-track-per-side album. Though it shares its title and some of the tracks with the US album, the cover art is different and this Australian version's issue year is 1973.

The LP turned up in Australia, licenced through Festival, on the Sunset label as L-15183, but with variations, The cover was different, there were only 5 cuts per side, thus The Hollies(licenced to EMI-Parlophone) and Count 5(which appeared here, I think, on the London label) were omitted from the Australian issue. I'll submit the cover and label when I have enough data in reserve.
