It's one of those "should've gone to spec-savers" moments, Phil!

I think the composer credits say it all regarding who was involved here. Billy "Big Yin" Connolly and Gerry Rafferty, long before he became part of another duo with Joe Egan, namely Stealer's Wheel.

When I said this might lay claim to first non-20-hits title, I was, of course, only guessing. R.C. has the details!. And R.C., what would your pick of the tracks be? For me it's Free Electric Band, Swamp Witch, Cover Of Rolling Stone, Venus and Play Mumma, Sing Me A Song. The last-named was written and recorded by a fellow who hails from the Lake MacQuarie region, just south of Newcastle, NSW.

It would be confusing to some because the labels had the lines radiating out from each side of the trademarks, but it's a silly mistake because the trademarks are so patently different to each other.

Kimbozw's comment: "german with an aussie accent must sound interesting ..." Should hear me when I speak it with a fake Italian accent.... really confuse the hell out of people(ha-ha!)

Took me three goes to get the back cover the right geometric size and file size in megabytes(whew!). Sorry' bout the condition of the back cover, a much-used album! Also there's an ever-so-slight discolouration on the Side B label.
What do you make of this one, Record Collector? Have you a copy tucked away down there in your vault?

Rowan And Martin - Rowan And Martin's Laugh-In
I made A DVD of my own from TV broadcasts packaged into half-hour segments and broadcast on Station NBN-Newcastle(Australia) some twenty-odd years ago, recorded onto VHS cassettes. The show certainly did have its moments.

This LP does indeed have a title, it is eponymously titled for the group itself, in the same way Diana Ross's first solo LP after leaving the Supremes. Eponymous, being: self-titled.

As I'd said elsewhere when this came up during discussion of The Beatles' Revolver album, this show really is made for TV as much of its humour is visual, thus its impact is lost when only heard on LP. This sort of humour can only hit its mark on VHS or, in later format, DVD compilations.

Sorry to go off-topic but I was simply noting Record Collector's "channelling" of Arte Johnson doing his German soldier routine(peering out from behind a bush and uttering "Veeeeery interesting but gooood"). But yes, getting back on topic, Beatles on EMI/Columbia - a vary unusual sight indeed but I wonder if they were really "mistakes".

Look at all those ugly publishing company credit stamps printed at centre of the labels. They really did spoil the appearance of the labels back then, just as the equally-ugly barcode does today!

They did release a Rowan & Martin Laugh-In LP, but of their humour was visual so it was lost on an LP.

It was. But it was more than 20 years ago since it existed. These days I tend to haunt Rice's second-hand book and record shop in Newcastle West, at what is referred to as the Bank Corner, Hunter and Hannell streets, still called that even though the bank is long since gone. I visit Rices every second Sunday and on other occasions when I've a mind to call in when I'm in Newcastle.

This was one of two Beatles LPs I bought at Graphic Novel, the other was a British re-issue of Beatles For Sale, which has been posted here often enough so I won't bother putting my copy on here.

Very strange to see The Beatles on Columbia, even though the labelling can be filed under "oops!" Nonetheless it's good to see the proper number of tracks in the correct order. The American version should be rejected as it does not comply with the correct(British) version.

Took a bit of work to clean this up a bit. Can't remember when I bought this(well over 20 years ago) but I do know where. It was a shop, then located in Pacific Street, Newcastle East(NSW, Australia), called Graphic Novel. The shop's name suggested a more dignified name for what we, as kids called them, comics. The shop, owned by one Dietmar Lederwasch, no longer exists(as far as I'm aware).

Seems to be a mix of content from 1970 up to 1972. Apart from the title of the album, the artwork is similar to 20 Solid Hits Vol.2, a 1971 release here.

Honestly, R.C., I never really noticed. I'd have thought, once the stereo mix was made, it would be stored and used in whatever compilation of Beatles material which required the track - one size fits all, so-to-speak!

Hi, Kimbozw. We all pick up a word or three from languages other than our native tongues from time to time. I chose to learn German out of interest. Funny thing, I'll put on a fake, comical German accent to speak Venn I speek ze comical English, ja!(when I speak the comical English, yes!) but when I speak German, it comes out with an Aussie accent.

I'll leave that one with you, R.C. but I know there are normal stereo mixes of those last three tracks in EMI's vaults.... somewhere! The Essential Beatles(I believe) carried stereo mixes of Penny Lane and All You Need Is Love, this leaves only Baby You're A Rich Man, which I have heard in stereo.

I have had the US issue of this on the Apple label for some years now. Seems the US Apple issue is the most common. And an aside to Record Collector, it's the last two tracks, Baby You're A Rich Man and All You Need Is Love that are in "fake stereo". Penny Lane is in a not-too-well-defined normal stereo. The Apple(USA) issue has the same catalogue number, though the prefix is SMAL. Thus my copy will be of 1971 vintage. It is said that EMI in Britain took quite a few years before finally issuing the album there, 1976, and again in 1978, making up for the delay, perhaps, both times on Parlophone rather than Apple.

Johnny Rivers - New Lovers And Old Friends
With my earlier comment to R.C. I was referring to the first 4 tracks on Side A that really are the pick of the tracks, not taking anything away from the rest of the album(my comment from 5 hours earlier, that is), this really is one of River's best. This is a great introduction to Johnny Rivers for anyone who had never heard him before.

PhilMH has filled in the blanks re: the Aussie release of NLOF(abbreviated to initials for ease of reference). As I said, I saw the Australian issue at a record fair some years ago but didn't buy it as I already had this Canadian issue.

Okay, just looked this album up in the "search" facility and noted it had been added as a new entry in Johnny Rivers' Canadian albums, but nowhere else, as yet!

Record Collector asked: "Did he do a version of baby I need your loving if so a great cover"
Answer: Yes indeedy! You'll find it on the CD - "The Best Of Johnny Rivers" EMI 814610-2 at Tr.9, followed on Tr.10 by "Tracks Of My Tears" which can also be found on "Portrait Of Johnny Rivers" EMI/Axis CDAX-701479 at Track 4.

R.C., next time you visit a record fair, or your favourite second-hand record shop, if you see this album(any nationality of issue), snap it up! You'll be oh so glad you did!
