Neil Forbes 27th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Past Masters | Because "The Compleat Beatles" was made just over a decade after the break-up, Delilah Productions were able to produce a comprehensive story of their history, but in 1982, who was to know we'd lose George Harrison to cancer in 2001? Even when the Anthology series was produced, Harrison was still with us and able to participate in that doco series. But now only two remain, Paul McCartney and Richard "Ringo Starr" Starkey. Should there be a revisiting of the story of the Fab Four, for chrissakes, keep Yoko Ono out of it! She was blamed by many for the Beatles' demise as a group, quite rightly, in my view.

Neil Forbes 27th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Past Masters | Er yeah, my mistake, but surely it should be written as MacDowell(upper-case D rather than lower-case d). The video would've been issued in 1982 but perhaps took a year or two extra to get to Australia. As I described, the first release was in stereo but with linear audio(two tracks, carrying left and right audio, along the edge of the tape) and a few years later in the Hi-Fi system(Multiplex-encoded track laid obliquely across the tape, alongside the video track).

Neil Forbes 27th Sep 2015 | | TVWelcome Back, Kotter (1975 - 1979) | RC:- "Colour looks if it was washed out"... That can be easily explained by the conversion from American NTSC colour system up to the superior German PAL system in use by more discerning countries, including Australia. The conversion highlighted the shortcomings of the American colour system against its vastly superior German counterpart.

Neil Forbes 27th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beach Boys - The Fabulous Beach Boys | I note the catalogue prefix varies here. The album is entered as MFP-A8090 but the label shows SMFP-8090. The first catalogue number variation would be on the cover, and sure enough, it was, in the panel at bottom-right on the rear of the cover.

Neil Forbes 27th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumDr. Hook - Greatest Hits | ReviewThere is only half the content here that had featured in the Australian PLAY-1000-series issue of this album title, plus the images of Ray Sawyer and Dennis Locorriere are missing from the heart-shaped moon on the front cover, making this a poor imitation of the Aussie issue.

Neil Forbes 27th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Past Masters | @RC, the title "Compleat Beatles" was applied to the 1982 Malcolm McLaren-narrated 2-hour documentary on the "Fab Four" charting their career from early formation through to the apparent bitter end. I have two copies, both issued by M-G-M/UA home Video on VHS, the first had a linear stereo audio track while the latter had the Hi-Fi stereo audio track. The first version would've been issued a month or so after the initial UK TV broadcast(Australian TV screenings notwithstanding) while the second Hi-Fi version would've appeared some four or five years later.

Neil Forbes 26th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Explosive Hits '74 | There was another "ring-in" in the form of Billy Thorpe's "Over The Rainbow", it's the 1965 version with The Aztecs omitted from the credits. Also, with a nod to, The Bear, I'll add the composer credits.

Neil Forbes 26th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Hullabaloo | No, RC, though I'm vaguely familiar with the TV show, I was referring to the record itself with its content of extremely rare and obscure recordings.

|
Neil Forbes 26th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Hullabaloo | The Gene Pitney track, "Cradle Of My Arms" dates from around 1959 or so, when Pitney was recording with either of the two Herb Abramson-owned labels, Blaze or Festival(the latter not to be confused with the Australian company of same name). Seems there are some very rare tracks indeed in this set. Such a pity there are no composer credit details available. Btw, the actual stereo number was SDLP-191 and the accidentally-used mono label for side B shows the cat. number as DLP-191. The label was part of the Pickwick organisation.

Neil Forbes 26th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumJohn Lennon - Mind Games | @RC, probably not! To my own way of thinking, McCartney, Harrison and Starr(Starkey) had the jump on Lennon as their releases were more commercially acceptable than Lennon's Yoko-obsessed ramblings.

Neil Forbes 26th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumJohn Lennon - Mind Games | This MFP cover design is the same as that used by EMI in Australia for the Axis reissue. I have the original 1973 issue on a US Apple LP and the cover artwork can be seen with the Greek version shown in the Linked Releases below. I honestly don't know why I bothered to buy this at all, really. Bar one or two, the tracks show Lennon's obsession with Yoko Ono.

It's got to be a very potent weed there, boy!

Neil Forbes 26th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Abbey Road | As it happened, "Her Majesty" wasn't even listed on the regular domestic Apple label issues of Abbey Road either, so there's nothing new in that revelation. As for why The Beatles crossed the road, I'm sure there was no "fowl"(foul) reason like there was for the chicken crossing the road(ha-ha).
|
Neil Forbes 26th Sep 2015 | | CD AlbumThe Beatles - A/B Road | Wouldn't even consider this as worth a mention. Those brazen enough to throw something like this together, then offer it for public market, they should NOT be rewarded for their efforts. Sure we can all make our own CD compilations of our favourite music, and some, like myself, even go that extra mile and design cards and labels to make them appear like professionally-produced CDs - BUT - there's no way on earth I'd offer anything I made for sale. No, I'll keep them for my own use.
|
Neil Forbes 25th Sep 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour | What got me was the superfluous addition of the EMI logo at the top, above the Parlophone logo, when it was already present at the bottom, below the track list and performer credit.

Neil Forbes 25th Sep 2015 | | TVSkippy The Bush Kangaroo (1968 - 1970) | One day, Sonny Hammond was in Sydney, with Skippy coming along for the ride, of course. It was around lunch time and Sonny, feeling a bit peckish, visited an Asian restaurant. Ordering a plate of food he'd have some and feed some to Skippy.... but poor old Skippy's digestive system couldn't handle it and she was throwing up in the gutter out front of the restaurant. A passing stranger sees this and asks what was wrong with her, to which Sonny replied... wait for it.... "Thai's got my kangaroo down, sport!" Ha-ha!
