Juke Jules SUBS 20th Dec 2012 | | 78 RPMThe Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra - The Dream Of Gerontius (Op.38) Prelude (1945) | Thanks, I was quoting from a re-issue CD
Surfing Wikipedia, we find that The British Council first appeared in 1936, but more usefully, under Sargent we find:
"A recording regularly chosen over all others in comparative surveys is the first of Sargent's two versions of Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius with Heddle Nash as tenor and the familiar Sargent pairing of the Huddersfield Choral Society and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, recorded in 1945"
I think that in a great many cases the date most commonly associated with pre-war 78s is the recording date, so I will add 1945 for the date of this even if the date of release is not known, as it may help to order the label catalogue no's

Juke Jules SUBS 11th Dec 2012 | | 78 RPMThe Johnny Otis Show - Ma (He's Makin' Eyes At Me) / Romance In The Dark (1957) | [YouTube Video]
"Ma He’s Making Eyes at Me" was sung by Al Jolson in a 1920 Broadway show "The Midnight Rounders". The definitive lyrics may have been found on the original printed music sheet from 1921, but many recordings since then have seen departures from the original with everyone adding their own variations
The earliest recorded version may have been by Eddie Cantor in 1921 (YT) while a piano roll recording (YT) (from the same year ?) has different lyrics, as does another early recording which I cannot date, titled simply "Ma", by Edward Fielding (YT) with the Fleming Novelty Orchestra on Royal 10101

Proclaimed retrospectively by two respected critics to have been 'the finest' recording of this popular classic; meanwhile collector of Nessun Dorma recordings, Jan Neckers, opines that:
"Valente was a predecessor of Harry Secombe and though Italian had a music-hall career in Britain and it shows. There is indeed some raw power and a good top note but it is clear that performing four times a day during many years had taken its toll and the voice is clearly worn" http://www.jussibjorlingsociety.org/bestnessundorma.html

Let's hope we will see these releases here soon as there is plenty of detail we can post about them
